Chapter 222: Chapter 131: The Pope Is Jealous? I’m Here to Beat Up a Nun
"What brings you to me this time?"
Edith gently lifted her cup of tea, took a small sip, then looked at Su Xuan with a languid gaze and asked the question.
"There’s something I’d like to ask you," Su Xuan said, getting straight to the point.
Edith’s crimson gaze flickered over to Lucia, who sat beside Su Xuan, and she seemed to have already guessed his purpose.
"Speak freely. There’s no need to beat around the bush."
She set down her teacup as she spoke.
"It’s about the mysterious death of a Purple-robed Priest in Black Rose Ancient City," Su Xuan said bluntly. "I’m investigating the matter."
As the true ruler of Black Rose Ancient City, there was no way Edith didn’t know about everything that happened in her domain.
After all, a Purple-robed Priest held an important position within the Bright Church Court. His rank was at least equivalent to a Count, and as the administrator for all Bright Churches in Black Rose Ancient City, the cause of his death could not be easily concealed.
"I’ve been occupied with other matters lately, so I haven’t delved into the details of this case. However, I can grant you the authority to investigate," Edith told Su Xuan. "The Purple-robed Priest’s body has been placed in a morgue in Black Rose Ancient City. You may go and examine it whenever you wish."
"Thank you."
Su Xuan thanked her. With a single sentence, Edith had undoubtedly made things much easier for him in Black Rose Ancient City.
"Oh, right."
Su Xuan took the Demon-Devouring Insect from his pack. "Do you recognize this creature?" he asked Edith. "Who do you think would raise them?"
"A Demon-Devouring Insect?"
Edith glanced at the black insect enveloped in golden light and remarked, "A certain Prince enjoys studying these types of creatures. I believe his name is Prince Tedes. He’s the King’s younger brother."
"The King’s own brother?"
Su Xuan’s eyes narrowed slightly as he sank into thought.
"It would be best not to provoke him," Edith warned. "He is the third most powerful person in the Star Kingdom. As you are now... you are not yet his match."
"Mm... Alright, I understand."
Having gotten the answer he wanted, Su Xuan left Edith’s mansion with Lucia.
After they left, Edith picked up her teacup and blew gently, sending ripples across the surface of the tea. She raised it to her lips, but her hand paused midway.
She was lost in thought for a moment, a faint glimmer in her profound eyes.
Then, Edith gently set down her teacup and tapped its rim with her fingertip.
In response to the gesture, a mysterious woman completely shrouded in black mist appeared by her side. She was clad in black armor, like an emissary emerging from the shadows.
"Master, what are your orders?" the woman’s voice was low and respectful.
"Protect him from the shadows. He is very important," Edith instructed her.
"As you command." The woman dissolved into a wisp of black mist and vanished.
Only then did Edith, reassured, pick up her cup and drain the remaining half of her tea.
...
"Let’s head to Black Rose Ancient City now."
Su Xuan glanced at the sky. Night had just fallen, so it wasn’t too late.
"Mm."
Lucia nodded gently. Her golden-red eyes, hidden beneath a white veil, glinted as she seemed to be lost in thought.
Just as Su Xuan was about to activate the Teleportation Array to Black Rose Ancient City, Lucia suddenly asked, "Are you on good terms with the Lady of the Star Kingdom?"
"We’re on decent terms, I suppose."
Su Xuan reflected on his relationship with Edith. ’She’s the Succubus who created Ivsha. She’s probably willing to tell me so much more because of Ivsha than anything else.’
Lucia fixed her gaze on Su Xuan, her tone tinged with a hint of doubt and concern. "How much do you know about her?"
Su Xuan mulled it over for a moment before replying, "I don’t know much about her. Probably less than I know about you."
’All I know is that Edith is a Succubus who escaped from the Abyss, and her own kind despises her. Other than that, she’s the master of Star-Calling Castle, Red Maple Territory, and Black Rose Ancient City, and she’s openly backing a Crown Prince for the throne. As for her real motives, I’m completely in the dark.’
Lucia’s gaze hardened slightly upon hearing Su Xuan’s words.
’Do you know me very well?’
Then, she warned, "In that case, it would be best to avoid relying on her power. Something about her just makes me feel uneasy."
"Oh..."
Su Xuan nodded, his mind racing. Lucia seemed suspicious of Edith. ’Is it because of the natural opposition between the Church Court and Demons?’
’Of course, I’m definitely more inclined to trust Lucia; she’s a member of the Guild, after all. And while Edith is close to Ivsha, they’re still two separate individuals.’
With a flash of white light from the Teleportation Array, he and Lucia arrived in Black Rose Ancient City.
The atmosphere of Black Rose Ancient City caught Su Xuan’s attention. A faint, sweet fragrance permeated the air. At the city’s center, a colossal black rose bloomed with a dark purple light, a breathtaking spectacle.
"You two, please follow me."
Not long after he and Lucia arrived in Black Rose Ancient City, a man in dark golden armor appeared before them. Su Xuan’s gaze flickered over the man, and he instantly acquired his information.
[Will (Elite)]
Level: 66 (500/33,600)
Race: Human
Power: 1,550 / Agility: 1,352 / Magic Power: 1,344 / Physique: 1,505
Growth: 8 (Gains 8 points to All Attributes per level)
Skills: (Expand)
"My name is Will, an Oath Knight of the Rite of the Black Rose," Will said, introducing himself as he led the way. "I heard you came about the Purple-robed Priest. As it happens, I’m investigating that case as well."
"Any leads?" Su Xuan asked.
"None."
Will shook his head and sighed. "The only lead we found was taken by those Regulators from the Bright Church Court. This is the Lady’s territory, but they’re acting with complete impunity! They even killed several of our Law Enforcement Knights! If I get my hands on them, I’ll make sure they never leave Black Rose Ancient City!"
At these words, Su Xuan glanced at Lucia. He noticed a flash of coldness in her eyes, but it wasn’t directed at Will.
Soon, the three of them arrived at the morgue in Black Rose Ancient City.
The Purple-robed Priest’s body was laid out in a private room. As they entered, a strange smell filled the air. It wasn’t a foul stench, but rather something like the smell of fermenting grain.
"This is the body of the Purple-robed Priest, but he’s unrecognizable now," Will said, pointing to the corpse on the slab. The body had become a shriveled husk, as if all its blood had been drained away.
The first thought that flashed through Su Xuan’s mind was ’Vampire’. But he quickly dismissed the idea. The corpse wasn’t just drained of blood; its fat and muscle had also vanished without a trace, leaving only skin and bones.
"I’ll leave you to your investigation. I have other business to attend to, so I’ll be taking my leave."
Will didn’t linger and left.
Su Xuan carefully examined the shriveled corpse, his attention drawn to the purple robe. It seemed slightly different from those of other Purple-robed Priests; its cuffs were adorned with several crosses, which seemed to carry some special meaning.
"Lucia, what do these crosses on the cuffs mean?" Su Xuan asked.
Lucia explained, "For a Purple-robed Priest to be promoted to a Golden Robe Priest, they must pass ten of the Church Court’s trials. This Priest had already passed six. He only needed to pass four more to become a Golden Robe Priest of the Bright Church Court."
"I see."
Su Xuan now understood the significance of the crosses on the cuffs.
The Bright Church Court was divided into two factions: Priests and Regulators. The Priest ranks ascended from White Robe, Blue Robe, and Purple Robe to Golden Robe Priest. The Regulator ranks, identified by their clothing colors, ascended from black, blue, and purple to red. A Golden Robe Priest was equivalent in status to a Cardinal, the red-clad leaders. Both were considered high-ranking officials in the Bright Church Court.
The deceased Priest was only four trials away from becoming a Golden Robe Priest, which explained why the Bright Church Court was taking this matter so seriously.
As Su Xuan was pondering this, a golden light glowed at Lucia’s fingertip. It then detached, floating over the surface of the corpse like a Little Elf.
The golden light traveled across the corpse’s surface, finally gathering over the heart and erupting in a blindingly brilliant flash.
A flash of anger crossed Lucia’s eyes. She quickly withdrew her Magic and said to Su Xuan, "Let’s go."
"Right."
Su Xuan agreed, as he too had seen the Purple-robed Priest’s status information.
[A corpse that died from Light Annihilation.]
’This Purple-robed Priest was killed by one of his own!’
’And it seems Lucia already knows who the killer is. There aren’t many members of the Bright Church Court in Black Rose Ancient City who could threaten a Purple-robed Priest.’
"I will hand this matter over to the Regulators," Lucia told Su Xuan.
"The Regulators from the Bright Church Court have a tense relationship with Black Rose Ancient City right now. Resolving this quickly won’t be easy. Since we’re already here, why don’t we just deal with the problem ourselves? What do you think?" Su Xuan suggested.
"..."
A thoughtful glint appeared in Lucia’s eyes as she heard his words.
After a brief silence, she spoke. "A fine suggestion. However, for certain reasons, I cannot reveal myself. You’ll have to be the one to deal with them."
"Me?"
’I was just going to teleport Rosaline and the others over, but Lucia wants me—the Guild President—to handle it myself...’
"Don’t worry. Your opponent isn’t that strong. You’re more than enough to handle her." Lucia gently cupped Su Xuan’s face with her delicate hand, her eyes filled with trust.
"Alright!"
...
Inside the Bright Church in Black Rose Ancient City, several Nuns were praying devoutly. One among them stood out: she had a graceful figure, beautiful features, and was exceptionally powerful.
"That will be all for tonight’s prayers," she announced to the other Nuns.
"Yes, Sister Sera," they replied.
"Sister Sera, you’re the one who has kept this church running since the Priest passed away."
"That’s right, Sister Sera! We’ll definitely recommend you to be the new administrator for Black Rose Ancient City!"
The other Nuns all expressed their gratitude and respect for Sera.
"Thank you for your trust," Sister Sera replied with a smile, though a mocking glint flickered in her eyes.
BANG!
Suddenly, the church doors were thrown open, and a tall, burly Half-Dragon-man appeared in the Nuns’ line of sight, causing them to gasp in terror.
"Who’s that?"
"A Half-Dragon-man?"
"Has he come seeking Faith?"
