Chapter 244: Chapter 244: Don’t Touch Me
Qin Muye: [?]
Que Feiling touched his burning cheeks and replied: [It’s *that* her... (blushing) It’s all thanks to your guidance. I have to thank you properly when we meet!]
His terminal vibrated.
Qin Muye sent a location.
It was a training ground within the Twelve Cities Military District.
Qin Muye: [Come here if you have the guts.]
Que Feiling sent back a smiling emoji: [I’ll head over next week.]
Although Qin Muye was a Prince with a high Superpower Level, he was still a newcomer and had to start from the Twelve Cities.
And Que Feiling, due to his criminal record of being in a detention center, also had to start from scratch.
They would be arriving at the military district around the same time. Since they were both S-rank, they would likely be assigned to the same team, barring any surprises.
When the time came, he could ask Qin Muye for some pointers on how to win his female master’s affection.
’My mortal enemy becoming my wingman to help me with my female master... This is even better than the soap operas they played on a loop at the detention center.’
Que Feiling lifted the hand Jiang Qingli had touched, looking at it from every angle. The corners of his lips curled up. He felt his future was bright, and happiness was within reach.
A few minutes later, the shackle on Que Feiling’s ankle came loose.
Mo Sinan’s voice came over the broadcast: "Mr. Que, please come to the director’s office. There are documents that require your signature."
Que Feiling acknowledged and got up, heading in that direction.
When he reached the top floor, he saw Jiang Qingli coming out of the director’s office. A tall, slender young man stood beside her, his back to Que Feiling as he walked toward the other exit.
Que Feiling’s heart skipped a beat. He quickly straightened his clothes and hair, then strode toward the girl.
"Miss Jiang!"
Jiang Qingli turned at the sound of her name and saw the red-haired young man with a brilliant smile, his eyes sparkling like radiant jewels.
Her eyes curved into a smile. She had just taken a step forward when the young man beside her spoke in a low voice, "What do you want with her?"
"Hello, brother." Que Feiling greeted him politely, secretly glancing at the girl, his cheeks slightly flushed. "Miss Jiang, I’d like to have a word with you."
Jiang Youchen’s brow furrowed slightly.
His hand, hanging at his side, lifted as if to grab the girl’s wrist.
But before he could touch her, Jiang Qingli had already agreed and walked toward the red-haired young man, smiling as she asked what he wanted to say.
The warmth of his knuckles brushing against the back of the girl’s hand was fleeting.
The sunlight illuminated the side of Jiang Qingli’s face, making every strand of her hair gleam. Jiang Youchen froze, lost in a daze for a moment.
’It used to be like this so many times before. She would walk away from my side, toward Baili Jing, without a single glance back at me.’
’The past and the present... it seems there’s no difference at all.’
Que Feiling, blushing, said something to her. Jiang Youchen had no interest in eavesdropping, so he walked over to the smoking area and lit a cigarette.
The smoke swirled, blurring the young man’s features.
He stood straight by the window, staring down at the crimson ember at his fingertips.
Just as the crimson glow was about to burn his fingers, he heard light footsteps behind him.
Jiang Youchen extinguished the cigarette, activated the air circulation system to clear the smoke around him, and opened the glass door to walk to her side.
On the way back, they walked in silence, one behind the other.
Once they were settled in the car for the ride back, Jiang Qingli tilted her head, studied him for a moment, and asked, "Brother, are you in a bad mood?"
Jiang Qingli glanced at her own reflection in the rearview mirror.
The handsome young man was looking at her, his expression placid.
Jiang Youchen’s voice was flat. "No."
"Yes, you are." Jiang Qingli leaned closer, tapping her chin like a detective as her gaze slid from his eyes to the corners of his mouth. "You’ve had a tense look on your face this whole time, like someone owes you a million bucks. Did I do something to upset you?"
Her familiar sweet scent enveloped him, effortlessly overwhelming his senses and his mind, creating an oppressive, suffocating feeling.
Jiang Youchen froze for a second, then turned his face away to avoid her gaze, his voice slightly hoarse. "No."
"Then why are you in a bad mood?" she pressed.
For a moment, Jiang Youchen didn’t know how he should feel.
The realization that she cared enough to notice even his subtlest emotions made his chest grow warm without him realizing it.
But he couldn’t tell her the reason for his low spirits.
His Adam’s apple bobbed, and Jiang Youchen heard himself say in a low voice, "It’s just work stuff. Don’t worry about it."
"Alright." Jiang Qingli sat back. "I don’t really understand that stuff, so I won’t ask."
As she moved back, the suffocating fragrance dissipated somewhat, yet it left a bitter taste in his throat.
Jiang Youchen glanced over and saw her fiddling with an earring between her fingertips.
The main part of the earring was a Ruby, with a feather dangling below it, connected by a delicate and intricate gold chain. It was dazzling in the sunlight.
Sensing his gaze, Jiang Qingli explained, "I brought the little bird some snacks last time I came. He said this was a gift in return."
Little bird.
Jiang Youchen was reminded of the "little puppy" she had mentioned twice while in his arms.
’It seemed a certain type of person always received her special favor.’
Jiang Youchen frowned. "Just a return gift?"
The moment the words left his mouth, he had a bad feeling.
That tone of voice really wasn’t like him.
"He doesn’t have any bad intentions." Jiang Qingli blinked, explaining earnestly, "I’m a grown-up now. I know how to tell if someone wants to harm me, so you don’t always have to worry about me."
For some reason, even though Jiang Qingli loved being treated like a child and acting spoiled in front of her mother and fathers,
in front of Jiang Youchen, she always wanted to prove that she was a grown-up, not a little kid who needed his protection.
She could already stand on her own two feet, so she didn’t want him to always treat her like a junior.
But Jiang Youchen didn’t seem quite able to accept this reality.
Hearing her emphasis, a hint of confusion and disappointment appeared in the young man’s eyes.
Jiang Qingli steeled her heart and pretended not to notice. She sat up straight, took off her original stud earring, put on the new dangling one, and pushed her hair aside to ask him, "Is it pretty?"
Jiang Youchen said, "It’s beautiful."
He raised his hand. His knuckles brushed past her hair and paused, hovering in a loose circle behind her back.
’If he just closed his hand—’
DING—!
A virtual bracelet materialized on her wrist, flashing red and emitting a piercing alarm.
reminded her: [Host, Jiang Youchen’s pollution value has risen from 33% to 37%.]
Jiang Qingli no longer cared about the earring. She grabbed Jiang Youchen’s wrist and asked anxiously, "Your pollution value went up?"
"It’s a normal fluctuation."
"A normal fluctuation sets off an alarm? Do you think I’m an idiot?" Jiang Qingli pulled at his hand, trying to get a clear look at the number.
Just as she grabbed his wrist, he seized her by the back and slammed her down onto the seat.
The next second, a powerful blast of air surged toward them. The car door was blown open with a BOOM, and the car’s frame was torn to pieces as Wind Blades mixed with sharp bullets closed in on them!
The air froze in that instant. Jiang Youchen kicked the door open and leaped out, holding the girl in his arms.
They were currently driving on a mountain road, surrounded by a lush forest.
Jiang Youchen held her securely in his embrace, rolling a few times through the forest before coming to a stop.
His gaze swept the surroundings, and he saw several figures closing in.
Jiang Qingli struggled to get up but was pushed back down.
"Don’t look," Jiang Youchen said in a deep voice.
"I can also—"
"Listen to your brother." Jiang Youchen cut her off, pressing a hand to the back of her head to stop her from objecting. "Count silently for five minutes."
Resigned, Jiang Qingli could only shut her eyes tightly, so he wouldn’t have to waste energy worrying about her.
Her vision went dark, and the sounds of screams and fighting were incessant.
When Jiang Qingli reached 300 in her silent count, the sounds around her ceased.
She opened her eyes and met the young man’s, which were faintly bloodshot.
He curved his lips into a smile, his voice very soft. "It’s over."
Jiang Qingli stood without moving.
Jiang Youchen thought she was scared and raised his hand to pat her head comfortingly, but she slapped it away.
The girl frowned at him and said coldly, "Don’t touch me."
