Chapter 620: DEFEND THE GATE!!
"ARCHERS!!"
Korvath shouted from above.
"KILL!!!"
Whoosh whoosh whoosh
Arrows rained down from above, pouring over the enemies that were already in a mess and couldn’t even stand up properly. This time, the shield men’s shields did not help because they couldn’t be deployed in time.
"RRRROOOOAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!"
"KKKKRRRIIIIEEEKKKKKKKKK!!!"
The beasts screamed in pain as arrows pierced through their skin.
And it wasn’t just the Arrows.
One by one, under Korvath’s command, more and more attacks came in.
Stones, large enough to crush the enemy under them, oils to burn their bodies.
"RRROOOOOOOOAAAAARRR!!"
More beasts screeched in pain as searing hot oil did its work. The beasts and mages started pouring down magic attacks, making sure the enemy did not survive.
In a single instance, tens of beasts and men died, and the best part?
The dead bodies created another wall that would now come in enemy’s way as they tried to attack.
"YEAAAAHHHHH!!!!"
"KILLL!!!!"
The Alliance are cheered, this time, much louder than before.
A fairly simple idea like making the ground more slippery worked far more effectively than any of them imagined.
And the even more surprising part?
Even when the enemy saw that some of the areas were slippery, that these areas were no different than death zones, they still moved forward, without a second of hesitation and they kept falling again and again—
Allowing the Alliance Warriors to continue shooting them from above, not only strengthening their morale, but also lowering the enemy number and piling up mountain of bodies that now worked at a Wall.
"DO NOT STOP! KEEP SHOOTING!"
Korvath commanded.
The Alliance cheered even more.
They were holding.
They were... truly holding, even against this... strange enemy.
Or at least, that’s what they thought or maybe just hoped.
But...
The slippery zones weren’t created everywhere. Lavinia wanted them to remain as an illusion, she wanted them to be at some places, not at the others so the enemy remained on edge, constantly watching their steps.
But the enemy did not.
They continued charging the same way into the slippery areas as they did in non slippery, normal areas and these areas—
The situation here became dire.
The enemy reached closer, some beasts started trying to climb the ridiculously large wall, others moved towards the Gates.
"REINFORCE THE GATE!!
TAKE DOWN THE BEASTS ON THE WALL!"
Korvath commanded again.
The movements shifted, the barrage of arrows that continued to pile up corpses, were now directed at other places, searing hot oil was now poured on the beasts that were climbing the Wall.
Stones and magic attacks were being poured down relentlessly as well.
At the same time—
The enemy in the sky began to overwhelm the Alliance Sky Unit, the enemy was too well coordinated and simply fearless, they didn’t mind sacrificing their own lives if it meant they could take at least one alliance warrior with them.
A mentality the men of the alliance army would have shared but...
When they saw the enemy—
When they saw how they willingly fell on the ground from air, dropping their own and taking one of theirs down with them with a plop, that too, with smiles on their faces—
It froze them.
It slowed their speed.
The situation below didn’t seem very good either, the Flying Unit could see that the Wall was about to fall and it affected them, especially the Velmourn warriors.
Now, Air Unit was the only Unit that hadn’t left with Kael, so they were at their strongest, even when Kael wasn’t here, the entirety of Alliance was hoping they would hold onto their own, in fact, they were hoping they would push the enemy back and help defend the ground, which was significantly weaker after Kael left.
However, instead of being able to defend the ground, the Air Unit, with their minds already affected by the enemies, were outclassed by the enemy riders and because of their carelessness and hesitation—
Five more enemy fliers pushed past them as they carried bombs along with them.
"RIGS!!"
The Rimewood Leader screamed, wanting to catch the enemies who had pushed past the flying unit and were now coming down. One of his own hook he threw caught one beast’s leg but—
Snap
The rope snapped under the strong force and the beast escaped.
The others couldn’t do much either, the Flying Beasts were fast and because there were no many, they helped each other if one of them got caught.
And with that—
BOOOM BOOOM BOOOM BOOOM
The enemy bombed the Alliance people.
"AAAAAGGGGGGHHHH!!!"
And—
The people screamed.
The enemy did not target the soldiers, the soldiers were strong, they had the power to somehow stop the bombs, or at least limit the casualties.
So instead—
They targeted the civilians who had been running around supporting the army in every way they could.
And those helpless citizens...?
They fell.
The bombs that fell from the sky tore their bodies apart, some lost their limbs, some of their bodies blackened, some didn’t wake up.
It was... brutal.
For a moment, the Alliance side froze, shocked by the sheer number of casualties.
But then—
"EYES FORWARD!!!"
Korvath screamed again.
"DEFEND THE GATE!!
THE FLYING UNIT WILL TAKE CARE OF THE BOMBERS!"
He gave more orders, forcing the army men to look away from the destruction. It was a cruel order, Korvath himself trembled as he felt the heat that came from behind, but he did not look back.
He looked ahead, at the beasts that were gathering on their Gate.
"ARCHERS!!"
He commanded.
The archers came out of their reverie and continued attacking, the same happened with throwers, and the other Units.
The Flying Unit started moving as well, trying to regain control.
But Korvath could see it.
His side had slowed down and this time—
His words didn’t have any effect.
Or at least—
The effect wasn’t as strong as he wanted them to be.
So Korvath only watched as the large beasts gathered near the Gate, he, with a cold look on his face, unsheathed his sword—
"Prepare yourselves."
He spoke as he looked at the already weakened army standing behind the Gates.
The look on his eyes was clear.
Nothing else could be done.
The enemy were coming in, no matter what they did.
BOOOOOOOOOOM
A Giant Beast slammed into the Gate, the whole Wall shook, dust fell from the stone above, the soldiers who had rushed behind the gates gate braced, the Beasts with Stone Magic reinforced the Gates again.
The archers and throwers continued their endless barrage, but the rider mounted on the large beast protected the beast’s weak points with his shield, making it impossible for them to stop him unless someone jumped into this endless swamp of beasts and face them head on.
Something no one could do.
So—
"KEEP REINFORCING THE GATE!!"
Korvath commanded.
He stalled for as long as he could before the inevitable happened.
