Chapter 276: Chapter 274: Big Brother and Little Brother
Wen Ying held out her hand, and Little White backed down.
She had wanted Little White to probe Kong Jian’s abilities, but her heart had softened the moment she saw his puppy-dog eyes looking at her.
Little White glared huffily at Kong Jian, but looked aggrieved when he faced Wen Ying.
Wen Ying reached out and stroked his soft head. "Kong Jian has nowhere to go, so he’ll be with us for now. You have to protect him. He’s just a child."
Hearing Wen Ying’s words, Little White, though still not fond of the boy, puffed out his chest and looked at Kong Jian. "Hear that, kiddo? I’ll protect you, got it? Even if you follow our master, you’re still my little bro. Understand?"
Kong Jian blinked, looking at Little White.
In the end, he nodded.
But the instant he nodded, Little White was already perched on his shoulder. "As my little bro, you have to carry me. This is the first mission your big brother is giving you, understand?"
Kong Jian nodded pitifully.
He suppressed the urge to grab its tail. "Da Guo..."
Little White reached out a paw and rubbed Kong Jian’s small, shaved head. "Alright, since you’re calling me Big Brother, I’ll have your back from now on. If anyone dares to bully you, just tell them my name!"
"And... what’s your name?"
"Little... Fox Immortal, or Fox Immortal for short!"
Kong Jian looked at him with a blank, cute expression, then nodded. "Can Da Guo talk?"
"Of course! But when we’re in front of people, Da Guo has to maintain his mysteriousness, you know?"
Kong Jian looked at him with his puppy-dog eyes and nodded.
"Okay, Da Guo."
"Will Da Guo play with me?"
As he spoke, Kong Jian reached out and grabbed Little White’s tail, lifting him into the air, feet dangling above his head.
Little White’s protests were suddenly drowned in a bewildered loss of strength. "Stop, stop, stop!"
"Put me down!" Little White said angrily to Kong Jian.
Kong Jian let go. Little White dropped from the air, then pounced onto a nearby rock.
His eyes burned with anger. "I’m your big brother, you know that?! How could you do something so... so disrespectful to your big brother!"
Kong Jian looked at Little White, confused. "But my Dahong likes to play like this. Kong Jian thought Da Guo would like it too."
"Don’t! You can absolutely never grab my tail again, understand? Or else your big brother’s dignity will be completely gone!"
Looking completely baffled, as if listening to a foreign language, Kong Jian nodded. "Okay, Da Guo. What should we play then? Liger said you would play with Kong Jian."
Hearing this, a plan instantly formed in Little White’s mind.
"Master, can I take the little punk to play?"
Wen Ying immediately agreed. She had been worrying about what to do with such a small child; a free babysitter was just perfect.
Kong Jian’s eyes sparkled as he looked at Wen Ying. "Liger, I’ll be back soon."
’I can’t make things difficult for this little punk in front of Master,’ Little White thought, ’but a little above-board "education" should be fine.’
Little White looked ahead smugly. "There’s something really fun up ahead. You have to keep up with me, got it? Otherwise, you’re not worthy of being my little bro, and you’re even less worthy of being Master’s disciple."
"Got it, Da Guo."
Little White leaned back, gathering its strength, then shot forward in a flash. It zipped up a nearby tree with incredible speed, leaping from one treetop to another as it headed into the distance.
A bright smile on his face, Kong Jian said, "Liger, Kong Jian will bring Da Guo back."
The words had barely left his lips when Kong Jian’s figure vanished from Wen Ying’s sight. Like an arrow shot from a bow, he was instantly five meters away, following unhurriedly behind Little White.
But while Little White was leaping through the trees, Kong Jian was on the ground.
No matter how dense or chaotic the undergrowth, no matter what obstacles were in his path, Kong Jian could weave through them with ease, always reappearing in the position closest to Little White.
Wen Ying watched this scene, lost in thought.
Little White’s cultivation was basically top-tier among humans.
Of course, that category did not include her.
But Kong Jian’s appearance had shattered Wen Ying’s understanding of this world. His skills were clearly no worse than Little White’s, and in some areas she didn’t understand, it even seemed like he had a natural advantage over Little White.
’How many other people like him are there in this world?’ she wondered.
Taking the red string from the system’s space, Wen Ying looked at it. It didn’t look any different from an ordinary red string.
It was about a foot long.
As Wen Ying’s hand gripped the red string, a wisp of black mist seemed to flash before her eyes, vanishing in an instant.
She broke the red string into lengths just right for a wrist, pinched the ends of each piece together, and the severed sections of string formed into bracelets.
There were eight bracelets in total.
Xu Jiali, Song Jiayan, Zhao Qi, Little White, Kong Jian, and herself.
That was only six people. There were still two left.
After a moment of thought, Wen Ying saved a red string for the director as well.
After all, Director Wen was her current patron.
She put one red string bracelet on her own wrist and stuffed the rest into her pocket.
Wen Ying continued, "Can I use the Wisdom Eye now?"
[You cannot.]
The system was so blunt, without a hint of sugarcoating.
"Can I at least take it out and look at it?"
A small, transparent box appeared in front of Wen Ying. She reached out and grabbed it. Inside was an eyeball.
But this eyeball looked rather strange.
Half of it looked like a normal eyeball, while the other half was completely white—a flat, dull white, like solid wood.
It didn’t look like part of an eye at all.
’No wonder the system said it was *half* a Wisdom Eye.’
’Half of it is normal, and the other half is useless.’
’The Wisdom Eye is for Kong Jian, but can such a young child understand these things?’
’This eyeball looks genuinely terrifying.’
"How do I use it?"
[A mature Wisdom Eye will actively find its master and take effect.]
’Alright, I get it.’ The system was just reminding her over and over that this was Kong Jian’s, and she shouldn’t get any ideas.
After she was done admiring it, the Wisdom Eye vanished, taken back into the system’s space.
"Can the immobilization spell only be used once? Was the lottery prize specifically for Kong Jian? Anyone who didn’t know better would think Little Kongjian was your host."
Remembering that only two of the ten lottery prizes were for her, Wen Ying felt she needed to fight for what was hers.
[Host... he... is related to you.]
"A lot of people are related to me. Does the system prepare this much every time?"
[Of course not. Fine. We will grant the Host one extra use of the immobilization spell. This use will cancel the cringey, chuunibyou-esque incantation that’s embarrassing enough to make you want to dig a hole and die in it. Requirement: It can only be used after the first incantation has been used.]
She suddenly felt that the system had a twisted sense of humor.
THUD!
A fist-sized rock came hurtling toward Wen Ying’s head, vicious and fast.
"Doctor Wen!" a piercing scream—
