Chapter 79: Beyond The Mountain Range

Reiji groaned as he slowly stood up from the ground. He stared at the translucent screen for several seconds.

The core of a B-Rank monster...

Absorbing it now would undoubtedly grant him another powerful skill.

But he slowly shook his head.

"...Not yet."

There would be plenty of time after leaving this place.

"For now..."

Reiji stored the Monster Core inside his inventory.

"...I’ll save it."

The system remained silent as the rain continued to fall over the corpse of the fallen Devil’s Eye.

It has started disappearing but Reiji guessed it would probably take several hours before it finished disappearing.

’Wait...’ Reiji suddenly thought of something. ’Why hasn’t the system said I have completed the quest?’

Reiji pondered it for a while and decided to start surveying the forest again but after thirty minutes of running and using Shadow step he saw nothing.

Just as he was about to ask the system fo help Detect Presence suddenly picked up something.

"The energy seems to be D-Rank..."

He rushed forward following the aura he picked up. Soon he reached the big field and immediately saw a mole entering a hole.

"So the are underground..." Reiji muttered as he clenched his fist.

[Hardening.]

BOOM!

Reiji punched the ground and instantly the ground exploded and serval miles flew out.

[Flesh Devourer Mole (D)]

Reiji was surprised when he saw their. If his creature had seen him when he came to Blacklake and rushed him all at once he would have died and have no flesh to resurrects.

[Water Jet.]

Compressed stream of water sot out from Reiji’s arm and strike the miles still in the air.

Ding!

[Host has killed a D-Rank Flesh Devourer Mole!]

[Water Jet.]

Reiji continued until he killed every last one.

[Host has killed a D-Rank Flesh Devourer Mole!]

Ding!

[Side Quest: Prove Thy Self Worthy Completed!]

[Qualifications As A Mage Complete!]

[You exceed the system expectations and have gained the title Versatile Mage!]

A tab showing his title appeared in his status screen.

"What?" Reiji muttered he never expected to get a title.

[Congratulations Host! You have gained +50 free stats points, +2 Mystery Items, Class Advancement to next class!]

Reiji stared at the system interface in shock. He never expected a class advancement tis early.

[Does Host wish to return back home?]

Reiji thought for a while before deciding... "Not now... I want to see what is across the mountains..."

Reiji stared walking towards the mountains. If he something ant to attack him he would quickly escape and go home.

As Reiji approached the mountains he decided to suppress his aura.

’What the hell...’

Reiji eyes widened in disbelief from what he was seeing. Across the mountains range was a big ocean stretching pass the horizon. It wasn’t an ordinary ocean because it was completely black. Darker than anything Reiji had seen before.

’No wonder it’s called blacklake...’ Reiji thought to himself. ’So this is an island?’

Then suddenly...

*Thump!* *Thump!*

Reiji heart beat hard in his ear. Every cells in his body down to the one in his skin screamed at him to get the hell out there immediately.

’System take me the fuck home now!’

[Transporting host back to earth...]

[3...]

’System hurry the fuck up!’

[2...]

[1...]

’System!’

Reiji figure vanished from the mountains range and Blacklake Realm returned to it silence.

But the surface of the black ocean trembled and a shining black scale surfaced followed by a big eye. If Reiji was here he’d be more than shocked because the eye alone of this fish was the size of ten whales put in a roll.

"A Human? Fascinating...."

The creature submerged back into he ocean.

***

The familiar sensation of space twisting around him lasted only a moment.

The next second—

Thud.

Reiji landed on the wooden floor of his bedroom. He instinctively steadied himself before looking around.

The familiar apartment greeted him. Everything was exactly as he had left it.

"...I’m back."

He slowly let out a breath he didn’t realize he had been holding.

Only now did he truly relax.

His body no longer carried the suffocating pressure of the Blacklake Realm, yet his heart was still beating much faster than normal.

His mind replayed the last few moments over and over again.

Reiji swallowed unconsciously.

"What... was that thing?"

He had encountered the Thorn Blade Bird, Apex Ape, The King Crab. The Tyrant Serpent Bird which evolved to the Devil’s Eye.

Compared to that aura they suddenly felt insignificant.

No, calling them insignificant almost felt disrespectful to the monsters he had struggled so hard to defeat.

"They weren’t even on the same level..."

Reiji slowly sat on the edge of his bed. His thoughts became increasingly chaotic.

"The Devil’s Eye was B- Rank..."

"It almost killed me multiple times. If that thing in the ocean appeared..."

He couldn’t even finish the sentence.

Would it be A-Rank? S-Rank? Or... Something even higher?

Reiji frowned. "No..."

He shook his head. "I don’t know enough."

Everything he knew about Gates, monsters and ranks came from Earth.

Who decided that the highest rank was S?

Had anyone ever discovered a creature beyond S-Rank?

Or had they simply never survived long enough to report it?

The more he thought about it the less certain he became.

His eyes narrowed. "There’s another thing."

Why was it called the Blacklake Realm?

That wasn’t a lake. It was an ocean. An endless ocean.

He had stood on top of the mountain and couldn’t even see the opposite shore.

Calling something that enormous a lake made no sense.

Unless it truly was a lake. Reiji’s breathing slowed.

"If that’s considered a lake... then how big is the ocean?"

The thought alone sent chills down his spine.

Could there really be a sea so massive that the Blacklake looked like nothing more than a pond beside it?

And if such a place existed... what kind of monsters lived there?

His imagination involuntarily returned to that enormous eye.

If a creature of that size could remain hidden beneath the Blacklake without anyone noticing...

Then perhaps the Backlake Realm wasn’t merely a training ground.

Perhaps it was only one island among countless others.

An entire world. A world completely separate from Earth.

Reiji rubbed his forehead.

"The more answers I get... the more questions appear."

Where had the System come from? Who created the Backlake Realm? Why had he been chosen?

Why was there a Class Advancement waiting for him?

What exactly was the purpose of becoming stronger?

Were there other realms besides Blacklake?

And most importantly...

Was that colossal creature merely another monster...

Or something far beyond that?

Silence filled the apartment.

Even the System remained unusually quiet.

For several minutes, Reiji simply sat there thinking.

Eventually...

He slowly stood up.

His expression had returned to normal.

"It doesn’t matter."

Whether it was S-Rank...

Beyond S-Rank...

Or something that didn’t even have a rank...

None of it changed his current situation.

Right now...

He was too weak.

Far too weak.

If he had stayed even one second longer...

He would probably have died before the System could teleport him away.

That alone proved how insignificant he still was.

Reiji looked toward the window.

The morning sun illuminated the city below.

People walked to work.

Cars moved through the streets.

None of them had any idea monsters like that even existed.

He clenched his fist.

"No matter what the truth is..."

"...the answers won’t come flying into my lap."

His eyes gradually became firm.

"I’ll find them myself."

"But first..."

"I need to become stronger."

Much stronger.
