Chapter 78: I Want To See My Rei-Kun (Hina’s POV)
HINA’S POV
I stared blankly at my phone.
The screen remained dark. No new messages. No missed calls. Nothing.
A soft sigh escaped my lips as I rolled onto my side, hugging one of the pillows lying on the bed.
"...Rei-kun."
I missed him.
It had already been a month and few weeks since we arrived for this family vacation, yet every single day felt strangely empty.
At first, I thought I would enjoy the scenery.
The beaches. The delicious food. The luxurious hotel. The shopping districts.
Everything had been beautiful but none of it mattered.
Not without him.
I unlocked my phone again. Still nothing.
"...Pick up."
I knew he couldn’t hear me.
Even so, I dialed his number once more.
Ring...
Ring...
Ring...
No answer.
The call ended.
Again.
A small knot tightened inside my chest.
’Why isn’t he answering?’
Rei-kun wasn’t the type to ignore me.
Had something happened? Did he lose his phone? Was he sleeping? Did he accidentally leave it somewhere?
Or...
My thoughts suddenly became much darker.
What if he had been hurt? What if someone had broken into the house? What if a Gate appeared nearby?
What if...
"No."
I immediately shook my head.
"Rei-kun is fine."
He had promised me. He said he’d stay home while I was away.
He wouldn’t lie to me. He wouldn’t leave...
Right?
I hugged my pillow tighter.
"...I trust him."
Even after saying those words, the uneasy feeling inside me refused to disappear.
I set my phone on my chest and closed my eyes.
The silence inside the room felt far louder than it should have.
Back home, there was always some small sound whenever Rei-kun was around. The clinking of dishes while he cooked. The quiet footsteps coming from the kitchen. The television playing in the background because he insisted it made the house feel less lonely.
I used to think those sounds were ordinary.
Now I realized they weren’t.
They were comforting because he was there.
I rolled onto my other side and stared at the curtains dancing gently in the sea breeze. The beautiful weather outside only made me sigh.
Everyone said vacations were supposed to be exciting.
Then why did I feel so restless?
"...Stupid Rei-kun."
A tiny smile escaped my lips.
Even when he wasn’t here, he still occupied every corner of my thoughts and I loved it.
I remembered the first morning after we started living together.
He had overslept because he stayed awake watching a movie the night before.
His hair had been messy. His eyes were barely open.
Yet the first thing he asked me was whether I had eaten breakfast.
At the time, I laughed at how silly he looked.
Now...
I wished I could see that sleepy face again.
Another memory surfaced.
The afternoon we went grocery shopping together.
He insisted on carrying every single shopping bag even though I could easily carry them myself.
When I asked why, he simply smiled and said,
’Because I want to.’
Such a simple answer. Yet it made my heart race more than any romantic line ever could.
I buried my face into the pillow. "...I really miss you. I want you..."
Maybe I had become too dependent on him.
No.
I smiled because I didn’t care. If depending on Rei-kun made me happy, then I wanted to depend on him forever.
I picked up my phone again and opened our old messages.
Most of them were ordinary.
’Did you eat?’
’I’m on my way home.’
’Do you want anything from the supermarket?’
Reading them made me giggle.
Anyone else would probably think our conversations were boring.
But every message reminded me that someone was waiting for me.
Someone cared. Someone thought about me throughout the day.
I slowly scrolled until I found one of the pictures we had taken together.
It wasn’t even a special occasion.
We had simply been cooking dinner.
There was flour on Rei-kun’s cheek, and somehow I ended up with some on my nose too.
Neither of us noticed until after the picture had been taken.
I laughed softly.
"...You looked so stupid."
My thumb gently brushed over his face on the screen.
The smile lingering on his lips looked so natural.
So warm.
"...I wonder what you’re doing right now."
Was he eating properly? Or had he skipped another meal because he became distracted watching TV?
Had he remembered to lock the doors before going to sleep?
Was he taking care of himself?
The more I thought about it, the more worried I became.
Maybe I should call him again. Even if he didn’t answer.
Just hearing the ringing somehow made me feel closer to him.
I pressed the call button once more.
Ring...
Ring...
Ring...
No answer. The call disconnected again.
"...Idiot."
I hugged the phone against my chest.
"When I get back, I’m not letting you out of my sight."
The thought made me smile again.
It didn’t matter how beautiful this resort was.
It didn’t matter how luxurious the hotel was.
None of it compared to spending an ordinary day at home beside Rei-kun.
That was where I wanted to be. That was where I belonged.
To distract myself, I looked toward the shopping bags piled near the corner of the room.
Yesterday’s shopping trip replayed inside my mind.
The boutiques. The cafés. The crowded mall.
Something had bothered me the entire time.
Women kept looking at me. Young girls too.
Some smiled. Others whispered to each other after I walked past.
I frowned. ’I don’t like that.’
It felt very wrong to me. The only person whose eyes I wanted on me was Rei-kun.
Him and him alone.
The thought made a smile slowly spread across my face.
He had stayed behind because of me.
Because I wanted him safe. Because I wanted him where no one else could see him.
He didn’t complain. He simply smiled and agreed.
"...You’re so good to me."
Warmth filled my chest.
The memories of the days before this vacation surfaced one after another.
Cooking together. Watching movies. Laughing over small things.
Simply sitting beside him in comfortable silence.
Those ordinary moments had become precious to me. The vacation had arrived too soon.
I hadn’t been ready to leave him behind.
"I already miss you..."
I whispered into the pillow before closing my eyes.
A sudden knock interrupted my thoughts.
*Knock.*
*Knock.*
"Hina?"
I immediately sat upright.
"...Yuki?"
Another knock followed.
"Can I come in?"
I stood, smoothed my clothes, and walked toward the door.
When I opened it, my younger sister greeted me with her usual cheerful smile.
"There you are."
She held a pillow under one arm and a folded blanket under the other.
I blinked.
"...What’s all this?"
She grinned mischievously.
"I was thinking..."
"...How about a sisters’ sleepover?"
I stared at her for several seconds.
Honestly...
I wanted to be alone.
But Yuki looked unusually excited.
She practically bounced on her feet while waiting for my answer, her bright smile making it difficult to refuse.
"...Fine."
The smile on her face immediately widened.
"I knew you’d say yes!"
Before I could change my mind, she walked straight into the room and tossed the pillow and blanket onto the bed.
"You really don’t waste any time."
She laughed.
"If I waited any longer, you’d probably change your answer."
"...Maybe."
She giggled.
For the first time in a while, I found myself smiling naturally.
We spent the next several minutes spreading the blankets across the bed before climbing onto it.
Neither of us spoke immediately.
Instead, we simply lay side by side, staring up at the ceiling.
The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.
It felt... relaxing.
"So..."
Yuki was the first to break it.
"How have you been?"
"I’m fine."
She turned to look at me.
"That’s it?"
I glanced back at her.
"...What else should I say?"
She pouted. "You’ve always been like this."
Our conversation started with ordinary things.
The vacation. The hotel. The food.
The places we’d visited over the past few days. Before long, the topic shifted to her training camp.
She spoke enthusiastically about the instructors, the obstacle courses, survival exercises, and even some funny stories involving her teammates.
I quietly listened.
As she continued talking, I slowly realized something.
There was still so much I didn’t know about my own younger sister.
She had grown and somehow, I hadn’t noticed.
"I might awaken next month."
I turned toward her. "...Really?"
She nodded excitedly. "The instructors think I have a really good chance."
A genuine smile appeared on my face. "I’m happy for you."
"I hope they’re right." She laughed a little nervously before looking back at the ceiling.
"I’ve been training really hard."
"You’ll do well."
"I hope so."
Silence settled between us once again.
After a while, Yuki suddenly snapped her fingers.
"Oh! I almost forgot."
I looked at her.
"What is it?"
"I’m leaving tomorrow."
I blinked. "...Leaving?"
She nodded. "One of my friends is getting married."
"A wedding?"
"Mhm."
"She’s marrying her girlfriend."
"I see..."
I quietly processed her words. She was leaving tomorrow.
She wasn’t staying until the end of the vacation.
The realization struck me almost instantly.
’Wait... If Yuki could leave why couldn’t I?’
That single thought rooted itself firmly in my mind.
I continued staring at the ceiling while pretending to listen to the rest of what she was saying.
An excuse... I only needed one believable excuse.
If I could return to Japan... I could see Rei-kun again.
Just imagining his face made my heart beat a little faster.
A small smile unknowingly formed on my lips.
Tomorrow... I’d find a reason.
No matter what... I was going back to Japan.
Back to my Rei-kun.
