Chapter 124: Chapter 124; What are they keeping from me?
Aiden’s POV
"Where is he?" I demanded, the glass doors of the hospital still rattling behind me as I gripped the doctor by his coat sleeve.
The physician didn’t flinch. He simply nodded and guided me down the sterile, white corridor, stopping outside an intensive care unit. "He is stable now, Alpha Aiden," he explained, adjusting his glasses. "But it would have ended catastrophically if your men hadn’t brought him in exactly when they did."
I peered through the observation glass, my heart hammering against my ribs. "What the hell happened to him?"
"We aren’t entirely sure yet," the doctor admitted, his expression tight with professional unease. "It is something completely out of the ordinary. When he arrived, his entire body was suffering from total paralysis. He couldn’t move a single muscle."
"Do you know who did this to him?" I snarled, the alpha beast clawing at the walls of my chest.
"I have no clue," the doctor replied, raising his hands defensively. "But you can question the pack workers who discovered him. They are standing right over there." He pointed toward the waiting area.
I marched over to the two men, my heavy footsteps echoing off the tile. The moment they noticed my approach, they snapped to attention, bowing their heads in unison. "Alpha Aiden," they murmured.
"Tell me exactly how this happened," I ordered, my voice dangerously low.
The first worker swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly. "I was doing the routine perimeter check, sir, when I found Sir Knox lying helplessly on the floor. There was absolutely no one else around the property."
"Did you notice anyone entering or leaving the house prior to that?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.
"I have no idea, Alpha," he whispered.
The second worker stepped forward, shifting uncomfortably on his feet. "Actually, Alpha... Ma’am Emily. She had come to the house earlier."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. "Emily?"
"Yes, sir," the worker confirmed.
"What the hell was she doing over there?"
"I have no idea, Alpha. But she was strictly the last person who entered the estate before we found him."
Confusion twisted tightly in my gut. I turned on my heel and walked back to the doctor, my mind racing with a dozen dark possibilities. "Is there any permanent damage? Is there anything else that can be done for him?"
"Nothing more is required," the doctor said with a reassuring nod. "The patient is going to be perfectly fine. In fact, he is fully awake now. You may go in and see him."
"Thank you."
I pushed the heavy door open and stepped into the room. The moment the hinges groaned, Knox’s vacant gaze shifted, his eyes meeting mine.
"What happened, man?" I asked, pulling a plastic chair closer to the bedside. "How did this happen to you?"
Knox let out a weak, breathy exhale, a small, forced smile touching his pale lips. "I... I ate something that was really bad, Aiden. I didn’t realize it, but I was completely allergic to it. I shouldn’t have touched it."
I stared at him, my internal alarms screaming at the obvious lie. "Really? An allergy did this to you?"
"Yes," he whispered, looking up at the ceiling.
"You need to be incredibly careful with what you put in your body, Knox," I said, leaning forward, my gaze locking onto his face like a vise. "But tell me... why exactly was Emily at your house today?"
A sudden, unmistakable flash of surprise darted across Knox’s features. His eyes widened slightly, a sudden tension gripping his jaw as he realized I already knew about her visit.
"Oh," he stammered, his voice dropping an octave as he tried to regain his composure. "That... I wanted to give her some important pack paperwork to pass along to you."
"And you couldn’t just bring it to the office yourself?" I countered, my skepticism bleeding through. I reached out, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. "Knox, if there is something you are strictly hiding from me, you need to let me know right now."
"There is absolutely nothing to tell, Aiden," Knox insisted, his voice tightening as he looked away from me. "Emily just came over to collect the paperwork. That’s all."
"Then why didn’t she hand me any files when I saw her at the house?" I demanded.
"She... she must have forgotten to take it with her when she left," Knox muttered, his breathing turning shallow.
None of this added up. Every single word coming out of his mouth was a fabrication, but looking at his pale, exhausted face, I knew pushing him right now would yield nothing. I let out a long breath and squeezed his shoulder. "Fine. None of this makes sense, but it doesn’t matter right now. You just need to focus entirely on getting well soon, okay?"
"I’ll be fine," Knox promised, offering another fragile smile. "Don’t worry about me, Alpha."
I forced a supportive smile onto my face, gave him a tight nod, and exited the room.
But the moment the door clicked shut behind me, the smile died completely. I stormed out of the hospital, my brain spiraling into a dark, chaotic maze. Knox and Emily? In what version of reality does that connection even exist? What the actual hell was going on between them? Emily was hiding something monumental from me, and she was going to tell me the definitive truth the second I got my hands on her.
I tore down the highway, the tires screeching as I pulled into my driveway. I slammed the car door and marched into the mansion, my voice booming through the foyer. "Emily!"
Silence greeted me.
"Emily, get down here right now!" I roared.
Nothing.
I stormed into the kitchen, grabbing the first maid I saw by the arm. "Where the hell is Emily?"
The maid gasped, her eyes wide with terror as she looked at my chest. "She... she left the estate a short while ago, Alpha."
"Where the fuck did she go?" I snarled.
"I have absolutely no idea, sir," she whimpered. "She didn’t say a word to anyone."
I let go of her arm, my blood boiling with absolute fury. What the fuck was Emily hiding from me? Why did she run the exact moment she realized Knox was in the hospital?
I turned and bounded up the grand staircase, heading straight for her bedroom doors. I was going to tear her room apart until I found answers. But just as my fingers wrapped around the brass handle, a sharp, rhythmic buzz vibrated inside my pocket.
I paused, pulling my phone out to check the screen.
It was a encrypted notification from my underground operatives. I scrolled down the brief text, and a slow, dark smile began to spread across my face. The lingering anger vanished, replaced by a wave of pure, unbridled satisfaction.
The demolition of Lucian’s brand-new estate was officially complete. It was reduced to absolute ash and rubble.
A dangerous, triumphant smirk settled onto my lips as I locked the phone. Your move, Lucian.
