Chapter 315: Chapter 313: Freak
They watched the figure that had appeared in the desert.
Zhan Yang and the others watched with wary eyes.
He swayed and stumbled, his gait unsteady, finally stopping a little over ten meters away from the four of them.
"Heh heh..."
The man tilted his head, letting out a soft, dry laugh in their direction.
But the sound was chillingly unnatural, enough to make one’s skin crawl.
He stood there, baring his teeth in a grotesque grin.
Zhan Yang’s expression darkened, and he remained on high alert.
He eyed the man with suspicion.
The man wore a suit of armor, clearly a Martial Cultivator and an officer from the Fire Sparrow Kingdom.
’He must be one of Wen Shixuan’s men from the Fire Sparrow Kingdom.’
He was sure of it. This had to be one of Wen Shixuan’s men.
JinLing, Lu Beifeng, and Niu Tuo all stared at the man.
He just kept smiling at them, his mouth stretched in a bizarre grin, his head perpetually tilted.
Seeing this, a sense of panic began to rise in Zhan Yang’s heart.
He said to the others, "Grab Jiang Chen’s body. We’re leaving."
Niu Tuo immediately hoisted Jiang Chen’s body onto his back.
The group departed at once.
But the man just tilted his head and watched them go, laughing that dry laugh as he unexpectedly quickened his pace to follow.
Though his gait was a clumsy sway, he latched onto them, refusing to fall behind.
After they had traveled some distance across the desert, Zhan Yang’s face grew grim. He turned and snapped, "We have no desire to provoke anyone from the Fire Sparrow Kingdom. Stop following us."
He warned the man, sensing that something was deeply wrong with him.
Yet, he couldn’t pinpoint what it was.
All he could do was try to make him back off.
"Heh heh..."
The man just chuckled dryly, his eyes fixed on Jiang Chen’s body amidst the group.
"Heh heh..."
He suddenly raised a hand and pointed at Jiang Chen’s body.
"Hm?"
"Brother, I think he wants Jiang Chen’s body."
"We can’t let him have it."
Unsure of the man’s intentions, JinLing immediately declared her position.
No matter what, she would not allow them to hand over Jiang Chen’s body.
Zhan Yang nodded in agreement.
He yelled, "Back off, or we won’t be so courteous!"
He couldn’t sense the man’s Cultivation at all, and Zhan Yang’s expression was grim.
"Heh heh..."
The man tilted his head and bared his teeth in a grin.
Then, he lunged toward Zhan Yang and the group.
He made a beeline for Niu Tuo, clearly intending to snatch Jiang Chen’s body.
"You’re asking to die!"
Enraged, Lu Beifeng drew his sword and slashed, landing a vicious blow on the man.
SQUELCH!
The single strike was enough to slice the man completely in half.
His entrails spilled onto the ground.
"Heh heh..."
Just as they thought the man was dead, the two halves of his body suddenly began to move with an eerie life of their own. Then, as the four watched in horror, the halves slowly slid back together.
He became whole once more.
"Heh heh..."
Whole again, he laughed his dry laugh at the four of them and resumed his reckless charge toward Niu Tuo.
’What?’
At the sight, the color drained from all four of their faces.
"We can’t kill him! This man can’t be killed!"
Zhan Yang was horrified. They had all watched with their own eyes as Lu Beifeng sliced the man in half, only to see him reassemble himself.
It was practically an Undying Body.
They were genuinely terrified.
Lu Beifeng’s heart hammered in his chest.
With another furious roar, he swung his sword again.
He rained down a dozen more slashes, dicing the man into fragments.
But then, to their renewed horror, the pieces of flesh began to squirm. They writhed and crawled toward each other, re-forming into a living man once more.
The four of them sucked in a cold breath.
The Ghost they had encountered before also had an Undying Body and couldn’t be killed.
And now they’d met a man who also possessed an Undying Body.
He was impossible to kill.
Everything here was so bizarre, so unnatural.
A cold sweat broke out on all four of them.
But they were still unwilling to leave Jiang Chen’s body behind.
"Let’s go, now! That’s definitely not one of the Fire Sparrow Kingdom’s men. I don’t think he’s even human."
"We can’t kill him."
"Go!"
The four of them fled. One monster like this was bad enough; if they ran into a whole crowd of them, they would surely die here.
They fled into the desert at top speed.
Without Jiang Chen to guide them, they could only flee aimlessly for their lives.
The monster followed again, but its swaying gait kept it from moving too quickly.
After some time, Zhan Yang and the others finally managed to lose him.
PHEW.
The four of them breathed a collective sigh of relief.
But once they stopped, the terror returned.
"What in the world was that thing?"
"What now? We need to find the third level and get out of this hellhole."
They were on the verge of madness.
They were encountering one terrifying situation after another.
JinLing spoke, her face etched with worry.
Zhan Yang glanced at Jiang Chen’s body and suggested, "Without Jiang Chen, finding the third level will be nearly impossible."
"This place is full of hidden dangers, and carrying Jiang Chen’s body is a huge liability."
"Why don’t we leave Jiang Chen’s body here?"
There was no other choice. Carrying Jiang Chen’s body was not only inconvenient, but now that he was dead, it served no purpose.
It wasn’t as if they could bring Jiang Chen back to life.
"I suppose it’s for the best."
Niu Tuo and Lu Beifeng reluctantly agreed.
But JinLing, surprisingly, was staunchly against it.
"No! We can’t abandon him. If we’re going to leave this place, we’re taking Jiang Chen’s body with us."
She was headstrong and deeply unhappy with the suggestion from her brother, Niu Tuo, and the others.
"Sister, it’s pointless to carry his body."
"He’s already gone. Why not bury him here? It’s quiet... a suitable place for him to rest."
Seeing no other choice, Zhan Yang thought burying Jiang Chen in the desert was a decent option.
In the end, the three men had to plead with JinLing.
Only then, with tears in her eyes, did JinLing agree to their proposal.
The four of them dug a hole and buried Jiang Chen’s body beneath the sand.
They fashioned a simple burial mound, and a wave of emotion washed over them.
"Let’s go."
Zhan Yang glanced back at Jiang Chen’s burial mound, his heart heavy with complex emotions.
’It wasn’t that they didn’t want to save him; they just couldn’t.’
After crying for a while, JinLing had no choice but to follow the others.
The four of them had just walked a short distance.
Just as JinLing glanced back, she suddenly cried out, "Look! He’s back!"
They turned to see the stumbling man reappear in the desert, now approaching Jiang Chen’s burial mound.
"That monster... is it really after Jiang Chen’s body?"
"What is it trying to do?"
The thought of that monster desecrating Jiang Chen’s body made the color drain from their faces.
JinLing shouted, "No! We absolutely cannot leave Jiang Chen here! We have to dig him up and take him with us!"
With that, she rushed back toward Jiang Chen’s burial mound.
Zhan Yang and the others had no choice but to follow her.
But the moment they moved, the strange man began to frantically dig at Jiang Chen’s grave.
He quickly unearthed Jiang Chen’s body.
"Heh heh..."
The strange man let out a sinister chuckle as he loomed over Jiang Chen’s body.
Then, the man’s body went limp, and he crumpled to the ground.
SWISH!
The next moment, a white worm bored its way out of the strange man’s forehead.
It scurried quickly toward Jiang Chen.
