Chapter 875: Rain of a Million Eyes

Asmodeus stood at the edge of the docks, glaring at the monstrous beast. He grasped the battlement tightly, almost crushing the pristine stonework. The ground beneath him shook as Logan’s shout echoed through the stormy winds.

"Power her up, hurry!"

He glanced up at the massive weapons aimed at the behemoth.

Brilliant purple sigils and runes flashed up the kraken slayer’s shaft, illuminating the darkness with their fluorescent light. A rumbling quake spread through the earth as Asmodeus tightened his lower muscles to remain steady.

The kraken slayer shook violently as the engines powering the mana circuits hidden inside the support shaft hummed.

’This is quite an impressive weapon.’

Asmodeus curved his lips at the sudden pulse of heat leaking from the massive ballista, countless elemental spells interwoven to create the pressure needed.

His glance shifted to the Leviathan before scoffing.

’This disgusting beast...’

Countless eyes stared lifelessly at the Kraken Slayers.

The lack of movement brought a sense of calm to the wall, allowing the engineers and knights to prepare themselves after the initial shock.

However, Asmodeus couldn’t afford to relax his guard, because the creature wouldn’t just ignore them. It was constantly watching. Millions of eyes, so numerous that counting them was nothing but a meaningless hassle.

They remained fixated on the coastal fortress and weapons atop the wall, yet somehow he felt that a great number of them watched him. Asmodeus couldn’t help but feel he was the true target of the monster, but that was also a peek of his arrogance.

Some blinked slowly in the rain, while others stayed open, still, glassy and pale like moons buried in rotten flesh.

The sight made several men tremble.

A few knights lowered their weapons without realising.

"Don’t look at its eyes!" Brando shouted, his voice cutting through the storm. "Focus on your orders! If you freeze, you die!"

His words snapped several soldiers back to themselves.

Logan, however, seemed beyond fear.

His hands moved across the control panel with frantic precision, pulling levers and shouting at the engineers surrounding the Kraken Slayer.

"Stabilise the third ring! Don’t let the mana flow leak to the left support! If the shaft cracks before firing, I’ll kill you before the beast does!"

"You’re really lively today," Asmodeus muttered.

He glanced up at the device, taking in its beauty. ’So those glowing magic circles must be the rings he’s speaking about...’ Asmodeus’s eyes shimmered gold as he observed the transfer of mana from each magic circle, condensing and condensing until the size of the mana shrank a thousandfold.

Valena remained close behind him, her hands clutching the back of his coat. Her breathing had become shallow, and the colour in her face still hadn’t returned.

Asmodeus leaned back and stroked her warm cheek, which felt like a kindling flame. A moment later, he pulled her into his arms.

Though a dragon now, Valena spent most of her life as a powerless wyvern.

’It can’t be helped; she’s still not a fully awakened dragon...’

Each time Leviathan’s eyes shifted, her little heart pounded faster as if terrified.

’So much for the proud dragon fearing nothing.’

"Master, that thing is waiting for something..."

"Hm?" Asmodeus glanced down at her face, tucked in his chest. "What do you think it’s waiting for?"

However, she only shook her head and peeked at Nerim.

"I don’t know."

Nerim, on the other hand, watched the colossal beast with keen eyes; she didn’t hesitate and began muttering to herself. Thanks to the water floating around her body, she didn’t need to worry about the wind or rain and focused on the beast.

"Your Majesty, I believe that it is still half-asleep... and doesn’t view us as enemies yet."

"Oh? Then surely, shouldn’t we greet it?"

"Do you really think that’s the best possible idea?"

Asmodeus shrugged at her question. The desire to leap down and carve into that disgusting island of flesh hadn’t disappeared. It only grew worse the longer Leviathan watched them with those empty eyes.

’No. Not yet.’

He tightened his grip on Axiom and forced his body to remain still.

The Kraken Slayer’s runes grew brighter.

Purple light crawled along the shaft, gathering around the enormous harpoon locked in place. The weapon looked like a spear made for a god, its tip layered with serrated metal and magical circuits, while the chains attached to its rear trembled beneath the pressure.

Arcs of lightning and pure mana leaked from the tip of the kraken slayer as the barrier shone brighter. Alan and the members controlling the barrier poured more mana into it, preparing for the battle ahead of them.

Asmodeus clicked his tongue.

All he could do was watch, waiting for the two weapons to charge fully; that’s when he would make his move.

"GURURURU!"

A deep groan leaked from the ocean, a voice that sounded like multiple screams stacked together, creating a horrid melody. The next moment, the world shifted; Asmodeus literally felt his entire body shake as Leviathan moved.

One section of its island-sized body rose higher from the water, and the storm around the harbour worsened instantly. The waves slammed harder against the defences, throwing black spray over the wall. The wind screamed through the gaps between stone towers, and several of the Valkyries above were forced higher into the sky as the air currents twisted violently.

"Logan!" Brando shouted. "Fire before it moves again!"

"I need five more seconds!"

"You have three!"

"Then pray quickly!"

Asmodeus lifted Axiom and prepared himself while narrowing his eyes. He planned that if the weapon failed, he would act. If Leviathan attacked before the shot, he would cut whatever came close.

His body settled into a strange calm.

The heat remained, but it no longer scattered through his limbs. It gathered inside his chest, around his arms, down into his grip.

Logan raised his hand.

"First Kraken Slayer!"

The engineers locked the final brace.

Purple light flooded the wall.

"FIRE!"

The Kraken Slayer launched.

The sound swallowed the storm.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The entire defence wall buckled beneath the recoil as stone cracked beneath the support frame, and several engineers were thrown off their feet despite the safety chains. A massive harpoon tore through the rain, carrying a spiral of purple light as it crossed the distance between the wall and the ancient beast.

For a moment, everyone watched it fly.

Then it struck Leviathan.

The harpoon buried itself into the creature’s flesh with a force that should have split mountains. Purple light erupted around the impact point, and black blood burst upward like a fountain from the wound. The sea around Leviathan boiled as the weapon’s magic detonated inside the outer layer of flesh.

"We did it!"

"YEAH!"

The cheers burst from the lower wall, with the massive laceration forming deep ravines in the behemoth’s flesh, wrapping around half the island-shaped beast.

"W-Wait! What’s happening?!" Nerim shouted, catching their attention. The blood stopped spraying, and the wounds closed around the harpoon. Its surrounding flesh clenched down on the weapon, swallowing the shaft until only the chain remained visible, stretched between the wall and Leviathan’s body.

Logan’s face lost all colour.

"No..."

Asmodeus narrowed his eyes.

"LOGAN, HURRY UP AND FIRE! DON’T STOP!"

His shout came as his wings spread wide, sending him into the air. The force pushed Valena and Nerim back as his body flew between the two weapons.

"Master!"

"Stay behind the barrier!"

Asmodeus shot into the storm before either of them could grab him. The wind struck his wings like a wall of blades, but he forced himself higher, rising above the coastal fortress as Axiom burned in his grip.

Below, Logan screamed at the engineers.

"Second Kraken Slayer! Load the next harpoon! Ignore the first chain! If you stop now, we’re dead!"

The crews moved while shaking.

The first harpoon remained trapped inside Leviathan’s flesh, its chain pulled tight from the fortress wall to the island-sized body. The weapon had wounded it, but only enough to make the ancient beast notice them properly.

Then the eyes changed.

Millions of pale eyes across Leviathan’s body slowly widened. Black Aura rapidly started gathering in the centre of each pupil.

As the small spheres shrank rapidly, Asmodeus’s blood ran cold.

"Valkyries!"

The airborne troops answered at once, spreading above the coast in layers. Spears, shields and rifles shone beneath the lightning as they formed a defensive net between Leviathan and the Kraken Slayers.

"Protect the weapons!" Asmodeus roared. "Everything else comes second!"

Before he could finish speaking, the first beam fired... then another and another... hundreds, thousands...

Light rained from Leviathan like a reversed storm, countless thin beams tearing across the ocean toward the Grigor coast. Asmodeus swung Axiom with both hands, releasing a crescent slash that erased several dozen at once, but more replaced them before the light faded.

The Valkyries met the barrage head-on.

Their shields shattered in a single blow, each beam sending them hurtling into the ground below like comets.

Several beams slipped through and carved molten scars across the walls, towers and lower docks.

"Hold!" Brando screamed from below.

The second Kraken Slayer’s runes flickered as engineers struggled to finish loading beneath the rain of death.

Asmodeus cut another wave apart; as blood poured down his cheek, he struggled to adjust his wings and movement. ’There’s too many... fuck!’ A beam slipped past him toward the first cannon, and he dove down, without care for his safety.

He tore through the air with Axiom, before the darkness tore through his wings. The impact threw him backwards through the storm, but the Kraken Slayer remained standing.

"Damn it!" His pupils shrank as the Leviathan’s remaining eyes opened wide.

And the next barrage began.
