Chapter 1380: Chapter 35: The Critical Call (Part 2)
Because of this, Emhardt couldn’t help but ask,
"Are you really going to listen to Renie and really not read the Completion Manual anymore?"
"Who told you I’m not going to read it?"
"...Didn’t you just swear? A man’s word is a deceitful ghost?"
"What I meant by ’the previous Completion Manual’ refers to the manual of Erwin I read last night. Reading this manual requires first finding the ’treasure’. I don’t want to emulate Erwin in desecrating life and there’s no other lead, so I can only not read it for now."
"...Impressive."
Emhardt’s eyes looked like a dead fish, indeed, he shouldn’t have had expectations for Fisher.
He continued to ask,
"Then what are you thinking, suddenly getting so quiet."
"...Just a little puzzled."
"Puzzled?"
"Hmm, remember when you first met Renie in the Northern Realm?"
"Honestly, I don’t quite remember. Her heart and soul were focused on you, in her eyes I’m just a talking Holy Object with no human rights. And she’s also quite frightening, I hardly dared to pay attention... What’s up?"
"Every time Renie appeared before, she was surrounded by a flock of Hart Birds. I know this is just her disguising her witch-like nature, just like how she previously lied about not being able to exchange consciousness with Hart Birds... But this time there’s not a single one, and I feel something’s off."
"Just speculation?"
"Just speculation."
"Hmm, that’s hard to say. After all, Renie’s true form is a True God, restricted by the gods for the crime committed by the Mother Goddess, this situation is quite sudden as it was because of your loss of control that she appeared suddenly, what she said is not without reason."
"I’m very curious about the ’method to resolve the Doomsday Prophecy’ she mentioned, I’m worried she might pay a price for it, perhaps the disappearance of Hart Birds is a sign."
"There we go, back to square one..."
As they spoke, Fisher and Emhardt had already arrived in front of the public phone booth. Due to the scarcity of phone booths, a queue had already started early, with several human gentlemen waiting to use the phone ahead of Fisher - demi-humans don’t use such things, and few need to use the phone for communication.
Fisher patiently lined up a short distance from a gentleman, hearing a subtle sound from Emhardt’s body following,
"Regarding the Hart Birds issue, if you need proof, just check whether Hart Birds appear the next time you see Renie normally. But I doubt this would resolve your doubts. You might then feel that she’s hiding some kind of price by bringing a few Hart Birds to placate you... You know what the key is? The key is that you can’t bear to stand by hopelessly while women face potential hardships. So, in essence, all of this is preparing you to continue reading the Completion Manual..."
"You’re right, so I want to call the Death Lord who I met in the Northern Realm earlier."
Emhardt blinked, then sighed and said,
"Everyone has a point, everyone is worried about their counterpart, as long as you’re aware of it yourself. If you’re truly the key to resolving the Doomsday Prophecy, Renie might have you escape first, but it would still catch up with you."
"..."
Fisher didn’t respond to him, just quietly waited until the gentlemen ahead of him finished their calls and it was his turn.
He stepped forward, picked up the phone receiver, paused for a moment, and his fingers transformed into countless thin strands of flesh wedged into the coin slot of the phone booth.
"Click!"
With a gentle sway, the sound of "tick-tack" echoed through the receiver, indicating Fisher to input a phone number.
He recalled the number the Death Lord mentioned, it seemed to be the Kado district code.
This guy is indeed a Kado person, but Fisher found it hard to imagine someone devoted to seeking death would remain anywhere permanently, especially since he’s a member of the Creation Society.
Fisher suddenly felt reaching out with this phone was somewhat absurd, could it be that this drunkard did it incoherently while intoxicated?
With a skeptical heart, Fisher’s fingers slowly returned to their original form, and he started rotating on the dial, one by one inputting the district code and transfer number.
"Click..."
"Ding ding ding..."
There was no one waiting behind him, and in the morning city, even passing carriages were few, making the moment feel particularly quiet as if the entire city consisted only of him and the receiver in his hand.
In the silent call, his suspicion that the Death Lord had left a useless phone number grew stronger.
Fisher tilted his head, having waited so long without anyone answering, he was about to hang up when suddenly a sound of connection came from the receiver.
"Click..."
"...Hello."
After a moment of silence, a particularly young, indifferent female voice suddenly sounded from the other end of the call, making Fisher pause slightly, momentarily speechless.
"..."
"Hello?"
The female voice echoed again, seemingly puzzled as to why the caller wasn’t responding.
Fisher snapped back to his senses, using Kado Language to ask,
"I’m looking for Mr. Holan Dionysus, is he available? I’m his friend and have something to discuss with him."
"..."
Like a turn-based game, it was now silent on the other end.
After a second, the female voice replied,
"Holan is not here, but if you have any message, you can tell me, and I can pass it on to him."
