Chapter 218: He Would Always Be The Most Important One
[FROLO]
[YESTERDAY]
Meanwhile, when the elevator doors slid open, Senator Aleksandr didn’t know what to expect at all. He knew things would be bad, but to see Katya in Masha’s arms, sleeping because of too much grief, was something else.
He knew how important the last five years had been for Katya and how much the omega had tried. But to walk into a space where it was just Masha and her son was heartbreaking.
Alek knew Katya had a whole village that was bound to show up for him.
Yet even they had stepped aside to leave the mother with her son. The sight was heartbreaking to say the least, and the senator wasn’t even sure what to say.
He had never seen Katya that defeated and lost, even in his sleep. He looked like the weight of the world had been forced on his shoulders, and he was trying his very best to cope.
But how could someone cope with anything after experiencing grief for five years, only to learn that it was never even his fault in the first place? No one knew what was right and how much this hurt.
They could assume, though. Because they had been there.
And right now, Alek found himself staggering at the sight.
Gods, it was painful.
"Alek..." Masha spoke, her voice soft as she lifted her head to look at the man who had been her son’s anchor for more than eighteen months now.

The man who had stayed and who loved her son in the kind of way no one had.
She had seen Katya so happy with the senator, and to see the man too shocked right now was heart shattering.
"I—" Alek began, only to see six figures showing up from the other hallway. They were quiet in their steps, like they didn’t want to risk waking Katya up.
Rahim and Volkov were still in combat wear, and Alek knew better than to ask what they were doing like that. Because anyone who had been around the Moskowskys long enough knew these two had been part of the doctor elimination team.
There was no way they would miss it, especially with the handguns holstered on their thighs casually. They looked nothing like the secretaries that Alek had always known.
Svet and Andre had never looked that defeated.
It was as if the world they had believed in was suddenly fading. They had been there through and through, and yet Alek saw the realization on their faces and how cruel it was.
The fact that no matter how much love they had for the omega in their hearts, nothing would ever be enough to fix the lies and the stolen happiness from Katya. And gods, that was cruel.
Miss Anya, the ever-confident lady, looked like she had seen the worst of the worst and wasn’t even sure what to say.
Then the barbarian came behind them.
The man who had reduced the city to ashes. Alek knew there was more to this. He knew that there had to be another reason why Sergei had allowed him to come to this place.
Granted, the city was already figuring out what they were seeing, but Alek had long started assuming the intentions. So, he wasn’t even surprised that many had fallen because of Katya.
Instead, he had trusted Katya’s love for him.
Because as twisted as it was, Alek believed that the only reason things had been happening differently lately was that Katya loved Alek. Otherwise, he would have been another head in the count of the dead.
"I’m taking my son home," Masha said.
Alek stared helplessly.
He knew there wasn’t much he could do because he couldn’t fight a mother for her son.
It was insane and unheard of, and it also explained why the Moskowskys and the crazy Romanov friends hadn’t done shit about the situation right now. This was who they were, too.
They all agreed that the omega would go home with his mother.
Then Sergei spoke.
"Maybe you should let Aleksandr take him home, Mrs. Romanova," Sergei said, and all heads snapped toward him in shock.
Hell, Alek could swear he broke his own neck turning to Sergei and what he had spoken.
Masha stared at the alpha like this had to be the most insane of things Sergei Moskowsky had done other than bring down an entire Senate building for her son.

Svet and Andre blinked at the man like they had lost count of all the surprises the barbarian had for them because this was certainly not real.
Anya, Volkov, and Rahim stared at their boss, yet he wasn’t even looking at them.
He was looking at Katya.
"Aleksandr?" the senator asked, unsure of what to feel about that name.
It was his, that much was certain.
But the fact that Sergei Moskowsky, the man who always called him senator with so much spite and coldness, was using it in a different tone made the senator feel like he was being prepared for slaughter.
There was no other valid reason.
"What?" Masha breathed like even she knew there was a war incoming right now. She wasn’t ready for it. She’d never be in such situations, but goddamn it wasn’t daily that Sergei Moskowsky suddenly felt philanthropic.
"He needs his alpha," Sergei added, and the entire room went dead silent.
Oh, but it was the kind of silence that was suffocating, a silence so uncomfortable that dying at the hands of the rowdy gangs was a much better fate than sitting or even standing in that silence.
Everyone looked at each other like they were contemplating whether they had heard the same thing from Sergei. It was unhinged to say the least.
The fact that it was coming from a man they all knew cared deeply for Katya was insane.
Hell, even the ashes from the burnt Senate hadn’t settled yet. And the bodies of the dead medics hadn’t gotten cold enough, and the man was already moving differently?
Everyone on the executive floor at the moment knew the city thought Sergei was in love with Katya Romanov. Yet the devil of Frolo was casually handing Katya over to another alpha.
It felt like bait.
Very dangerous bait.
Alek looked at Sergei as if this were an apocalypse waiting to explode on them.
"Are you sure about this, Mr. Moskowsky?" Alek asked carefully, as if he was not even sure where the detonators were at the moment for this time bomb.
"Aleksandr..." Sergei began again, and Alek’s eyes widened.
What the fuck was Sergei playing at?
"My penthouse is one floor above if you’d rather leave him with me," Sergei said instead, his eyes still on Katya like he was trying his very best.
His hands were fisted still, and his knuckles were turning white. Yet even so, he was holding himself back. He was choosing to let Katya go.
He was trying to be a decent person even when everyone had the answer and the dots connecting right in front of them.
Including the senator.

Because no one flattened the Senate for their friends.
No one stalked their friends at night for just that long.
No one went above and beyond to see their friend happy like Sergei was doing.
Friendship.
Right.
"I’ll... I’ll take him home with me," Alek said, agreeing to the offer that sounded more like a threat than an offer. It was the most diabolical of things, but since when had anything gotten straight where Sergei Moskowsky was involved?
Then again, this time there wasn’t malice in the alpha’s voice, only trust in the alpha and concern for the omega in his mother’s arms. It was the kind of concern that was life-threatening in so many ways.
"Great. I’m gonna get me a drink," Sergei said as he walked toward the stairs, ignoring the elevator, and went up to his penthouse.
But the people who stayed behind saw an alpha who was willing to step aside because the omega needed someone.
Maybe he would have taken him along, but he certainly doubted Katya would want to see him after the day’s progression.
As Alek drove to his home with Svet, Andre, Masha, and Katya in his car while Anya followed in her car, Alek didn’t need it spelled out for him anymore.
He finally understood why the city believed so desperately that Katya Romanov was the key to peace or war within Frolo.
