Chapter 209: Thread A Needle Through My Heart
[FROLO]
The sound of glass breaking on the floor brought the entire executive office to a standstill. And in moments, all the other floor staff members rushed out to see what was going on.
When they got there, the sight was heartbreaking to say the least.
Anya was the first to react, while Rahim and Volkov stood rooted to the spot, like they knew this was something that even they could not fix.
The secretaries had only just come back to the office barely minutes ago, dressed in combat wear and hadn’t even gotten time to change yet.
The tactical sniper rifle cases that they had come in with were barely inside the respective offices, as if they were no longer needed at the moment.
Behind the secretaries was a stoic Sergei Moskowsky, a man who looked truly defeated for the first time. A man who didn’t know what to say or do to make it all better. Especially as he looked at the sight in front of him.
Anya was holding Katya’s weak body on the floor, his tears free-falling down his cheeks. The broken glass at his feet was something that no one quite knew what to do about yet.
He had come for a glass of water, his backpack on his back as he readied himself to get out of the office after all, his shift was over, and it was only right that he went home.
The Romanov omega was not new to what was happening in the city, but Alek had confirmed he was safe. His friends had also confirmed their safety along with his parents.
The only other person he could have been worried about was in the executive office, and he was doing well.
But the screen that was staring right at them...
It held so much and spoke way too little about Katya’s pain.
Five years of mockery.
Five years of lies.
Five years of ruin...
All for things that were not even his fault.
"No one’s ever going to hurt you again. It’s okay," Anya cooed, her gentleness and kindness so foreign to Katya. Yet seemingly the only thing that kept him from crashing out in the office was.
Though if he were to crash out, no one would stop him. No one.
"She... They... My baby... my children..." Katya sobbed painfully as he stared at the screen, the desperate denial he had been trying to make himself believe fading fast.
This was not okay.
This was inhumane.
This...
Oh, but this was the confession that ripped through so many hearts.
"They won’t ever hurt you again," Anya insisted as she held Katya close, his head on her shoulder as he looked up at the screen. Her hands gently rubbed his arms in comfort as if to tell Katya that it was okay.
If Katya didn’t know any better about this woman, he would be tempted to think that she actually cared. That she was even capable of comforting a person. But that wasn’t even in Katya’s mind right now.
The confession was.
The headline: "The Unfortunate Omega Betrayed for Half a Decade"
The reports that were coming through.
"It was never your fault," Anya said as she hugged Katya tighter, the position a little uncomfortable since she was kneeling on the floor behind him, but she was fine. She had chosen to do this.
"They lied to me," Katya cried, his pain so raw and unfiltered like the first time he had lost. His hands lingered on his belly, for the first time in weeks, as he stared at the announcements filtering in... At the breaking news that showed on the screen.
It was terrible.
"They’ll pay. For all of it," Anya reassured, but Katya didn’t stop crying.
Honestly, she didn’t expect him to.
Not after how much he had suffered. And so Katya cried his eyes out. Bawling in Anya’s unexpected arms like they were the strangest of sights in here.
Volkov and Rahim excused themselves back to the office, passing their boss, who was standing there stiffer than they had ever seen him. He looked so lost, so unsure of what to do.
Maybe that was why Sergei walked back to his office to make a call.
"He needs you," he said into his phone.
"Please," he begged defeatedly before he hung up, staring back at the one thing he had thought would make it better.
As he walked back into his office, the image of a broken Katya on the floor and in Anya’s arms, Sergei knew he would never forgive them for making him cry.
He never had.
Perhaps that was why he locked his office door and sat on his desk before turning on the feed from the breakout room.
He didn’t trust himself to stay there and watch Katya cry for something Sergei did not know how to fix.
Emotions were foreign to the alpha, so foreign that he was overwhelmed right now. He felt like punching walls, but that would only scare Katya. And he wasn’t intending to add more fear and pain to his omega.
So, he sat and watched defeatedly as Anya comforted him. But there was never going to be any kind of comfort that would ever match what had happened.
Nothing would ever fix this for him. Or even Katya.
Absolutely nothing.
On Sergei’s phone, the channels kept buzzing, the notifications coming in, the reminder of what he had been waiting for.
He had wanted his omega to be happy after the confession.
To be free.
To feel like life was worth living again.
But how the fuck was life supposed to be worth living when Katya was curled up defeatedly mourning his baby all over again, and there was nothing that Sergei could do to make it better?
Ten minutes later, the executive elevator dinged, and Sergei watched on the feed as two very pissed-off alphas walked out, only to stagger at the sight before them.
And Sergei...
He didn’t have the courage to keep watching.
He couldn’t.
It didn’t feel right, and gods was it haunting for him. He didn’t understand the first thing about how to make things better, and it was crushing him.
"They lied to me," Katya mourned in Anya’s arms defeatedly, eyes slowly seeping from the amount of tears he had been shedding.
He was devastated.
So broken.
So ruined once again.
Yet even then, he looked heartbreakingly fragile.
"Katya..." Svetlana breathed as she looked at her friend in Anya’s arms.
She had never called Katya by his first name. It was always Romanov.
Never Katya.
Maybe that was why the omega turned to look at the familiar voice speaking an unexpected name to him.
Svet hadn’t moved an inch. Instead, she stared at the television, then at her friend on the floor, surrounded by broken glass.
Andre, on the other hand, was quick to act. He looked pissed as hell, even as he stepped forward and began picking up the broken glass.
For a moment, Anya had thought he would grab Katya from her arms, but he just cleaned up wordlessly, his eyes tender for Katya yet still filled with rage.
And Svet...
She moved to turn the TV off.
There was no need for any more of that.
The truth had come out in the ugliest of ways, and the biggest apology was owed to the omega on the floor.
"I’m sorry," Svetlana said, unsure of whether she was to step forward and take her friend from Anya’s arms or just wait a little.
"They... they took my children away," Katya mourned helplessly.
