Rebecca froze for a second.
Alice’s tear-filled eyes looked pleadingly at Rebecca. "Right now, what he needs is the person he cares about most... Only you can give him the strongest will to live at this moment, I’m begging you, go in there and encourage him..."
"Alice, get up first, don’t do this..." Rebecca’s voice was choking up too.

The nurse grabbed Rebecca’s hand and ran with her toward the operating room.

Her hand rested on the glass, and she stared dully at Chester inside, whose hand Rebecca was gripping tightly.
The doctors were operating in an orderly, methodical way, which meant the surgery was still within their control...
Claud Laurence took in the scene, then shook his head, heart aching.
Keith Antony said, "I just realized the person in this world who loves the boss the most is Miss Alice... She wanted so badly to stay by his side, but at the most critical moment, she still chose to let Miss Quentin be with the boss."
Watching Alice’s thin back, Claud said, "The fortunate thing is, Chester didn’t choose the cruelest way."
Keith looked at Claud, not understanding, but Claud had already turned away.
On the hospital terrace, Claud was staring faintly off into the distance.
"I know Chester isn’t someone who leaves things unsaid. Chester wants you to look after Alice, doesn’t he?"
Howard Geoffrey’s cool voice drifted over.
Claud turned around.
Howard Geoffrey walked up to the railing and said heavily, "Does he really not care about Alice?"
Claud followed his gaze into the distance. "I don’t know."
"Did he say anything to you?"
Claud answered honestly, "He told me his decision."
Howard Geoffrey’s eyes narrowed slightly.
There was the same depth and sharpness on Claud’s face as on Howard’s. "You’ve probably already guessed..."
"He stayed with Alice because he didn’t want anything to happen to her?"
Claud nodded. "Before his surgery, he told me... he said he wanted me to take care of Alice, because no matter how the surgery turned out, he was going to announce his death to her."
A fierce glint shot through the gloom of Howard Geoffrey’s eyes. "He thinks that’s what’s good for Alice?"
Claud replied, "I don’t approve of that decision either, but you know that once he decides something, no one can stop him."
Howard Geoffrey let out a cold, derisive snort.
"But..." Claud paused for a moment. "Yesterday at five in the morning, he called me. He said he’d changed his mind."
Howard Geoffrey looked at Claud, his eyes slitting into a line.
Claud said quietly, "He decided to tell Alice the real outcome of the surgery." Claud sighed again. "I think he’s realized what would truly be the cruellest thing for Alice. Judging from how she reacted today, I believe the decision he ultimately made was the right one."
The deep furrow between Howard Geoffrey’s brows slowly eased. "He’s just someone who’s lost in his own feelings. He hasn’t figured out his own heart."
Claud nodded. "I think so too... But no matter what, he doesn’t deserve Alice."
Howard Geoffrey didn’t respond, just stared heavily into the distance.
The fifteen-hour surgery was finally over.
The doctor walked out of the ward, and everyone swarmed around him.
Director Turner pulled off his mask, his voice so exhausted it was nearly spent. "The operation was a success..."
Everyone finally let out a breath of relief.
Standing on the edge of the crowd, Alice heard the doctor’s words clearly. A faint smile appeared on her bloodless face...
Howard Geoffrey was holding Rebecca, kissing his beloved wife.
Everyone was immersed in joy.
Claud searched the crowd for Alice, only to see that she had already passed out and collapsed on the floor...

Claud helped Alice sit up. "Do you want some water?"

Alice asked, "Where are they?"
Claud answered, "Miss Quentin and Miss Quinn were just here with you. They’ve gone to see Chester now. Howard Geoffrey and Skyler Jones are talking to the dean."
"I want to see my brother too."
"Okay, but you have to finish the IV first."
