Chapter 144: Chapter 144: Because I Know You Won’t Hurt Her
The night was still long. A clear, bright moon hung high in the sky without a single blemish, as pure and white as an angel on earth. It was much like Summer at this moment—untainted by anything, her heart pure. But Kenneth Yates had no idea what she was thinking. ’If only I could bear this heavy pain for her,’ he thought. ’Why is it always Summer who has to suffer so much for me?’
Early the next morning, a large crowd gathered at the Bell Group, consisting of media reporters and staff. The reason was that Kenneth Yates, that emperor-like man, had actually arrived at their headquarters. Although their two companies operated in different fields and weren’t competitors, both were leading giants in their industries. They were never seen interacting, so no one could fathom why such a powerful figure would grace them with his presence.
More importantly, he had brought his recently announced, beautiful wife with him. Though she appeared somewhat listless, her beauty was still soul-stirring.
All the reporters were kept outside by bodyguards. Kenneth Yates wore a grim expression and said nothing the entire time, but his grip on Summer Lancaster’s hand never loosened.
Everyone was buzzing with speculation, and the staff were just as confused. They hadn’t received any orders to receive Kenneth Yates. For him to arrive at the Bell Group with his wife... could he be planning a takeover?
A sense of panic began to spread as people worried they would suddenly be out of a job. Given Kenneth Yates’s reputation, such a thing wasn’t out of the question.
"If Kenneth Yates becomes our CEO, I’ll be more motivated than ever to come to work," Employee A said, thrilled. "Caleb Bell is handsome too, but he’s so cold that everyone keeps their distance. Kenneth Yates is different. He just exudes this dashing, flirtatious charm."
"If Kenneth Yates takes over as CEO, do you think we’ll still have jobs?" Employee B shot back, mercilessly pouring cold water on Employee A’s fantasy. Employee A could only slink away from the lobby and back to her desk. ’Compared to gawking at a handsome man, my job is more important.’
The office was simple, with only a few pieces of furniture. It was so clean that it reflected one’s image. A man sat in a chair, his eyes fixed on Summer, whom he had not seen for several months.
Only then did he shift his gaze to the grim-faced Kenneth. "Out with it. Why have you graced me with your presence? Or are you simply... here to flaunt her in front of me?" Caleb Bell stood, his tone turning sharp.
Kenneth Yates didn’t answer. He just pulled Summer forward by the hand.
"Summer, it’s been a while. How are you? Why do you look so... drained?" As Caleb spoke, his smile froze on his face. Summer’s eyes weren’t moving at all. This was no ordinary vacant stare.
"What happened? Kenneth Yates, what the hell did you do to her?!" Caleb furiously grabbed Summer’s other hand, trying to pull her to his side, but Kenneth’s grip was just as tight.
"My wife... she’s been cursed with witchcraft. I heard your grandmother is a Wizard. I was hoping I could ask for her help in treating my wife."
"You still have the nerve to call her your wife? Is this how you protect her?" Caleb Bell swung a vicious punch at Kenneth Yates’s face, but Kenneth was quick enough to catch his fist.
"Don’t get the wrong idea. It’s not that your family is the only one in the world who can help her. I just don’t want to risk exposing her to anyone else. I came to you because I know you would never do anything to hurt her." Kenneth’s gaze was resolute. No matter the state of his relationship with Caleb, he knew one thing for sure: Caleb Bell would absolutely never harm Summer.
