Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Things I Want to Know
Asher gazed down at the seal in the center of his palm. He had carried a memory he couldn’t recall since birth. No one had told him what it was, but his kinsmen had told him he could never escape his fetters. He hadn’t understood what "fetters" meant when he was young, and he still didn’t understand now. ’What kind of nightmare will this memory, sealed away with such effort, eventually become?’
Summer Lancaster sat waiting in the lounge, a cup in her hands. The water in it had long gone cold, but she continued to grip it tightly. The moment Kenneth Yates walked out, she finally felt a glimmer of hope.
"Kenneth, how did it go?" Summer Lancaster hastily set down her cup, rushed to Kenneth Yates’s side, and grabbed his hand.
Her icy touch shot through him. Kenneth Yates held her hands, but he could still feel her tension, her trembling. ’Perhaps she’s also vaguely sensed that Asher is no ordinary person.’
"I’m fine." Kenneth Yates took Summer Lancaster’s hand and led her outside. Eleanor Grant was already there. After the three of them got into the car, Eleanor Grant looked like she wanted to say something but held her tongue.
"Eleanor, what did you want to say?" Kenneth Yates asked, his own expression hesitant. ’Eleanor probably knows something,’ he thought, ’but she’s not sure if she should say it.’
Beside him, Summer Lancaster turned her head to face the window, not wanting to intrude on the history they shared.
"President Yates, I never expected Asher to be the CEO of Lancer. He seems... different. He’s not the person we used to know." Eleanor Grant’s voice grew quieter as she spoke. She didn’t know how to describe the change in him, only that his gaze seemed to hold something unknowable.
Kenneth Yates’s gaze went distant as he muttered, "Yes... he’s been hiding things from us from the very beginning."
Eleanor Grant turned back around in her seat. She now knew Asher’s true identity, but she couldn’t reveal too much in front of Summer Lancaster. ’It would only hurt her.’
Although Summer Lancaster was looking out the window, her attention kept drifting back to them. But their conversation had ended.
’What in the world could make the ever-composed Kenneth Yates so uncertain...’
By the time they reached the hotel, it was already evening. Summer Lancaster wasn’t in a hurry to change clothes. Instead, she tugged on Kenneth Yates, wanting him to take her out for a walk to see the sky in a different country.
"Kenneth, do you believe in fate?" Summer Lancaster asked, holding his hand and looking up at him, her eyes filled with anticipation. The dazzling city lights around them couldn’t seem to penetrate her serene heart.
"I don’t. So-called fate is just an excuse made by people who are determined to be together but are forced apart. If two people truly want to be together, it requires immense hardship and sacrifice. That’s what love is." Kenneth Yates looked into Summer Lancaster’s eyes, speaking as if he were describing the two of them.
Summer Lancaster, who had been a little disappointed, broke into a smile again.
’Love doesn’t just appear out of thin air, nor does it vanish without a trace.’ That was the answer she had been looking for.
As they passed a bar, the incredibly lively scene captivated Summer Lancaster, and she stopped in her tracks right before its entrance.
"Kenneth, let’s go get a drink!" Summer Lancaster said happily, pulling him into the bar. It was crowded inside with scantily clad women, handsome men, and plenty of dejected-looking souls drinking alone in the corners.
The two of them took seats closest to the bar. A bartender immediately came over and asked them what they wanted to drink in fluent English.
