Chapter 114: Chapter 114: You Are My Special Person
"No one else is allowed to see!"
Kenneth patted her head dotingly and chuckled. "Fine. Only my wife gets to see!"
"Oh no, I’m so late!" Summer glanced at her watch. At this rate, she’d be late even if she flew to the office.
"This is all your fault! Let’s go! No one dares to say anything to you, but have some pity on a low-level employee like me, okay?" Summer grabbed Kenneth’s arm, pulling him along.
"Then how about I make you the Vice President? How does that sound? Besides me, no one would dare to criticize the VP."
"What do you mean, ’besides you’? Anyone can criticize me, but not you! If you’re going to promote me, promote me all the way to the top." Summer yelled at him, fuming. ’He’s still joking at a time like this? Does he really think the company is his own personal playground, where he can make anyone VP just because he feels like it?’
Summer was mistaken. Only much later would she realize that the company really was his to command. He was completely in his element when it came to arbitrary reassignments, doing it so smoothly that no one could find any reason to object.
Walking behind Summer, Kenneth broke into an indulgent smile before quickening his pace to walk in front of her.
Sure enough, by the time they arrived at the company, they were nearly twenty minutes late. Summer frantically opened the car door to get out, but Kenneth suddenly pulled her back.
"What’s wrong? Let go. Even if we’re late, I at least have to look like I’m in a hurry." Summer looked at Kenneth, confused.
Her words made Kenneth laugh, but he didn’t let go of her hand.
"Hey, who are you putting on a show for?"
Summer froze. ’Who am I putting on a show for? The HR manager? But the HR manager answers to him. So what am I even doing?’ Summer sat up straight and turned to face Kenneth. "Mr. Big Boss, getting such blatant special treatment doesn’t look good." She didn’t want her colleagues gossiping about her.
"I’m the boss, you’re my special someone, and I give you permission to be special."
His words completely defeated Summer. ’Only Kenneth could say something so outrageous.’ ’Fine. Since the boss is my escort today, I’ll be willful just this once.’ Summer sat up, straightened her clothes, then took out her compact to touch up her makeup before finally getting out of the car.
There was hardly anyone at the company entrance, as it was well past the start of the workday. The lobby, however, was crowded. Summer had been walking forward with courage, but upon seeing so many people, her feet seemed to grow heavy, and she came to a halt.
Kenneth came up from behind, took her hand, and gave her a reassuring smile, leading her toward the lobby.
His smile always had a way of making her feel safe. She once believed that this version of him was someone she could trust for a lifetime. But things didn’t go as planned. Even if his smile was instinctive, it was still driven by his heart.
The receptionist instinctively glanced up when someone entered, assuming it was a late employee, but instead saw the stunning couple, practically glowing in the crowd. The President had been injured a while back, and rumors had been circulating that the two had broken up. But seeing them now, that seemed impossible. In her five years working here, she had never once seen the President walk into the company with a smile like that. Today was a first.
Many employees waiting for the elevators also turned to look, starting to whisper amongst themselves. Summer lowered her head. She didn’t want to be the subject of gossip, as if she’d only gotten ahead through connections. Kenneth’s gaze swept across everyone in the lobby. Immediately, the staring and whispering ceased as everyone quickly refocused on their work.
