Chapter 496: Chapter 371 The Recurring Pestilence_2

Yara pulled out the communicator and was somewhat surprised to see the name displayed on it. After all, Dong Tianyu hadn’t notified her before coming, so getting his call now meant he must have already arrived in Kyoto.

After pressing the answer button and hearing Dong Tianyu’s voice on the other end, Yara’s face revealed an "I thought as much" expression.

"Lion, I’ve just gotten off the plane. Hurry up and come pick me up," he said.

Hearing the unceremonious command from the other end of the phone, Yara chuckled, then deliberately said, "Oh dear, why didn’t you contact me earlier? I’m out of town right now and won’t be able to get back for a while."

Upon hearing Yara’s response, Dong Tianyu retorted directly, "Who are you trying to fool? You’re acting like it’s still before the catastrophe. Call me when you can actually make it; don’t give me that crap, just come and pick me up."

"Right, right, right, you’re not wrong—I am trying to fool a ghost. But tell me, why did you suddenly come to Kyoto without any heads-up?"

"Just come pick me up, and we’ll talk about everything face to face."

"Are you nuts? The airport is in the suburbs. It’ll take ages for me to go there and back. Just take the light rail to Wenhe Palace Station; I’m waiting for you there," Yara retorted.

After hearing Yara’s plan, Dong Tianyu considered for a moment and then replied, "Okay, that works. Wait for me there. I’m hanging up."

Yara looked at the communicator, which showed that the call had been disconnected, and promptly turned off her phone. She then said to the people beside her, "The airport is still quite far from Wenhe Palace. Come on, let’s speed up."

Just as Dong Tianyu got off the light rail, preparing to use his communication device to call Yara, he heard the ’beep beep’ of a car horn. Looking in the direction of the sound, he saw Yara leaning against the hood of a car, waving at him.

"You didn’t even give me a heads-up, why the sudden trip to Kyoto? Did something happen to you? Don’t tell me the Bug Invasion breached the camp?"

"That shouldn’t be the case. If something that big had happened, I should have heard about it here as well," she remarked.

"Don’t jinx me. Nothing happened at Pengcheng or in Saxon County. Those Soldier Bugs that fell from the sky were exterminated before they even attacked the camps. So, the camps in both Pengcheng and Saxon County are very safe," he explained.

Yara responded incredulously, "Could it be that Pengcheng also has ’Missile Messengers’, just like here in Kyoto, that directly destroyed the crack in the sky?"

On hearing Yara’s guess, Dong Tianyu’s face also showed disbelief, "What! ’Missile Messengers’ can destroy the crack in the sky?"

Hearing Dong Tianyu’s skepticism, Yara was now sure that the method Pengcheng used to clear the Soldier Bugs, though different from Kyoto’s, managed to wipe out all the Soldier Bugs that descended.

Curious about how Pengcheng eradicated the Soldier Bugs, Yara directly asked, "Without using ’Missile Messengers’, how did you manage to exterminate all those Soldier Bugs?"

Without any intention to conceal the truth, Dong Tianyu readily shared the reason, "Haven’t you been to Pengcheng? You must remember the giant tree in the city center."

Hearing Dong Tianyu’s question, Yara nodded, "I definitely remember it. Honestly, I’ve been to many places after the catastrophe, and even though giant trees grew everywhere in the wild after the earthquake, none was as big as the one in the center of Pengcheng."

"I don’t know if you’re aware, but no living thing can enter that tree’s shade, or they’ll quickly be devoured and killed by the Bugs hidden within the shade.

For some reason, those Soldier Bugs, as they approached Pengcheng, seemed to be irresistibly drawn to it, wildly rushing into the shade.

Once the Soldier Bugs entered the shade, they were all devoured by the Bugs hiding inside. That area of shade was like a bottomless pit—no matter how many Soldier Bugs surged in, they all vanished without a trace, stirring not even the slightest ripple," he recounted.

Hearing Dong Tianyu’s explanation, Yara’s eyes suddenly sparkled, "You’re serious? That tree is that powerful?"

"It’s not the trees that are strong, but the bugs hiding in the shade that are mighty."

"The bugs in the shade, are they those uniquely found in Pengcheng, the Devouring Bugs used to make nutritional supplements?"

Upon hearing Yara’s question, Zachary nodded, just as he was about to say something, for some reason, both Zachary and Yara inexplicably looked up.

At this moment, a bright spot appeared in the distant sky, which could also be faintly seen in several other places further away.

With his sharp vision, Zachary saw the limb outlines of the closest bright spot—the bug legs. Seeing those legs, he immediately understood the origins of these bright points.

The first time the sky crack appeared was during the day, so the observation of the other side of the crack wasn’t clear, but this time it appeared at night, and the other side of the crack was still in daylight. So, as soon as the crack opened, anyone who looked up could see the abnormal phenomenon in the sky.

As soon as this situation was discovered, Kyoto immediately sounded the air raid alarm. Hearing this alarm, Yara immediately pulled Zachary into the car, "Let’s go, this isn’t the place to talk, get in the car and we can talk."

After the two got into the car, Yara floored the accelerator and peeled away. Although it was nearing evening, there were still many people on the street. Perhaps because of the air raid alarm, everyone now looked hurried and anxious.

Sitting in the passenger seat, Zachary asked the seriously driving Yara, "Where are you taking me?"

Hearing the nonchalant tone, Yara replied grumpily, "Where else could we go, definitely to the safety base. Although I estimate this bug disaster won’t reach the city, it’s best we get informed about the battle situation as soon as possible. Just in case something happens, we can react immediately."

While Yara and Zachary were hurrying to the safety base, like the first bug disaster, countless Soldier Bugs fell from the bright points in the sky, just like dumplings being dropped.

Perhaps because the other end of the crack was unaware of the situation here, the initial wave of Soldier Bugs, as always, plummeted to their deaths, becoming the foundation of Bug Mountain.

As the number of Soldier Bugs continued to increase, so did the height of Bug Mountain. Once Bug Mountain reached a certain height, like last time, the bugs arriving later landed directly on Bug Mountain and quickly climbed down from it.

Having learned from the previous incident, Kyoto this time had arranged for fighter jets equipped with nuclear missiles, called Peacemakers, to deliver gifts to the Bug Race on the other side of the crack.

However, as these fighter jets were about to approach the crack in the sky, they suddenly came under attack from many bugs.

The cloak of night hid the buggy shapes well, and for some reason, the radars on the fighter jets had failed to detect them.

Unaware of the danger, the pilots in the fighter jets smashed many of the Flying Bugs to pieces with their high-speed movement; but some lucky survivors not only avoided being hit but also managed to land on the aircraft.

And even the fighter jets’ extremely hard alloy bodies were easily pierced by the bugs’ sharp forelimbs, like a knife slicing through tofu.

When the aircraft became damaged, alarms blared in the cockpit. Listening to the incessant warnings of the aircraft being compromised, the pilots knew they were likely beyond saving.

So, disregarding safety, they increased the speed of the jets and headed straight for the crack in the sky. If they were destined to be sacrificed, their sacrifice had to be meaningful.

Just as the fighter jet approached the crack in the sky, the pilot decisively pressed the launch button; the missile carrying the Peacemaker detached from the jet instantly and sped up, aiming to break into the crack.

But whether by coincidence or not, just as the missile was about to enter the crack, a gigantic figure crawled out from it.

Before the giant bug’s body had fully passed through the crack, the missile carrying the Peacemaker slammed into its body.
