Chapter 53: Becoming A Farmer
Gray drove back to his private house, parking the Charger right in front of the door since a lot of people were still outside and working. It was barely 2:00 PM, and he had already brought back a solid group of survivors. He planned to go out and explore the wasteland at least once a day, but seeing the community grow bigger, he knew he needed to expand the infrastructure. He decided to focus on underground work instead of surface building for now.
Once inside his house, Gray teleported straight down to the lowest level of his subterranean facility. Grabbing his fully charged industrial jackhammers, he started aggressively clearing out the stone walls, expanding the deep layers sideways to make room for his future utility plants. By the time his clock hit 7:00 PM, a loud chime rang out in his vision. He had accumulated a massive balance of 5,103,382,190,286 Gold, meaning he finally had enough to purchase the next upgrade.

To handle the incredible volume of blocks he was getting, he built tons of double chests, lining them neatly along the newly expanded underground walls. He worked for about two more hours before deciding to call it a day, teleporting back up into his comfortable house to relax and continue watching his Marvel movies and TV shows.
The next morning, Gray woke up right at 7:00 AM. He immediately checked his Status Info.

The moment the transaction cleared, a shimmering spatial gate materialized in his living room. Gray stepped through the portal, and the gate closed behind him.
Upon entering, a series of system prompts appeared, indicating he had 2 acres of fertile land for farming. He walked to a small wooden hut and found a starter pouch with 500 special farm gold coins. There was also a desktop computer, which he turned on to access a shop interface displaying various crops for purchase, though his options were limited by his Level 1 status and available coins.
Looking through the available options, he chose to buy a large sack of radish seeds for 150 farm coins, which the system noted was exactly the amount needed to plant his entire 2 acres. Not seeing any other tools around, Gray walked out of the hut and into the wooden warehouse. Sitting on the floor was his newly purchased sack of radish seeds.
The moment his fingers touched the burlap sack, another prompt flashed in his vision.

Gray simply pressed the Yes option.
As soon as he gave the command, the farm dimension came alive. A spectral shovel appeared, digging perfect holes in the field as radish seeds flew from the bag and landed neatly in the soil. A magical watering can followed, watering the seeds before the shovel covered the holes. The pocket dimension handled all the labor for him.
Gray walked out into the field to examine the soil. A system tooltip appeared, showing that this special dimensional dirt sped up crop growth by ten times. He walked over to a small water pond at the edge of the property and checked its stats, discovering that the dimensional water source held the exact same ten-times growth multiplier.
Gray’s eyes widened. Combined, the soil and water allowed him to grow crops 20 times faster than normal. He stared out over his newly planted field, realizing that this jaw-dropping speed was only the baseline for a Level 1 space.
Gray remembered how the novel’s main character had leveled up his pocket dimension. The trick was bringing entirely new types of crops and different animals into the space. Gray left the dimension and walked down to the underground farming floors. He grabbed a regular carrot, a potato, and some wheat seeds. Since these crops already grew in just 24 hours in normal dirt, he wondered how fast they would grow inside the farm. He also opened his system shop and bought sugar cane, beetroots, and some Nether and End crops from Minecraft, spending 10 Million Gold on the new species.
He walked back to his house, closed the front door, and teleported down to the lowest level of the underground. He opened the farm portal again and stepped through with all the new crops in his hands.
The moment he entered, his screen was flooded with lots of notifications. Bringing in so many advanced, magical crops instantly leveled the farm from Level 1 to Level 20.
A message popped up saying he had officially unlocked the ranch. To get animals for it, Gray only had to teleport a few floors up to the prison’s animal pastures. Thanks to Hershel and the others, the livestock was easy to find. Gray teleported two of each animal cows, chickens, pigs, and sheep down to the bottom floor. Then, he opened the farm dimension and moved the animals inside.
The system chimed again, granting him 5 more levels instantly, pushing his farm level to 25. He looked around and noticed that he did not get more land from the level up. Instead, some of the soil turned red.
Not minding it too much, Gray saw how the animals were transported to a magical barn. Inside, a screen showed him how many of each animal he had. The space was limited to 10,000 total animals, so he chose to set it for 2,500 of each creature. The farm prompted him that the animals could be bred instantly until he hit the exact numbers he wanted. Finally, he was granted access to a Spatial Bag. This bag held everything inside the pocket dimension, giving him perfect access to all his crops no matter where he was.
Thanks to the special water and soil, Gray saw that the Minecraft crops would fully grow in just one hour. He opened his system shop and bought 100 seeds for each of the normal crops. He got carrots, potatoes, sugar cane, melons, pumpkins, and beetroots. He also saw some modded crops in the shop and chose to buy 10 of those too. He picked up cabbages, tomatoes, flax, and cotton. Adding these new seeds earned him another level for the dimension.
He willed the dimension to plant everything automatically. Watching the new crops start to grow, Gray walked out of the portal and left the dimension to handle the work by itself. He planned on leveling up the space as much as possible. His goal was to grow the Minecraft crops in there and then just hand them to the prison group so they could have more variety in their fields.
Gray teleported back into his house and started getting ready for his next exploration trip. He walked out of his house, got into his Charger, and drove off into the distance.
Once he was far enough away from the prison where no one could see him, he got out of the car. He put the vehicle back into his inventory, spread his white wings, and flew high into the sky to start his search.
Gray continued exploring the skies of Georgia for a while longer. He spotted a few scattered groups of survivors through his world map, but none of them were struggling too much or facing immediate danger, so he decided to leave them be. After two hours of scouting, he opened his user interface to check his wealth. He had 1,112,242,622,938 Gold available in his balance. He finally had enough to purchase the second farming skill, but first, he decided to secure an important movement upgrade from the shop. He purchased Jumper-style teleportation.
He decided to test it out right away. Gray instantly vanished from the open sky and appeared directly inside his living room. The heavy forward momentum he had while flying was completely stopped the exact second he shifted spaces, allowing him to land perfectly on his feet without crashing.
Now safely inside his house, Gray spent 1 Trillion Gold to buy the Home Garden ability.
A new screen appeared in his vision showing him what kind of crops he could grow. Gray decided to teleport to his lowest underground floor. He placed the new plot of land into one empty corner of the stone room. The plot had 50 individual squares where he could plant whatever he wanted. Having read that manga in his past life, Gray knew the crops would grow super fast. He chose to plant 10 squares each of lettuce, rice, onions, cucumbers, and garlic.
Having a bit over 100 Billion Gold left, Gray bought a lot of magic crystals from that fantasy world and fed them to the garden. Each magic stone gave the garden 1 XP. He only needed 5 XP to make the garden reach Level 2. Once it hit Level 2, he unlocked the option to grow actual meat trees. The number of farming squares also doubled to 50 more, but the required XP for the next level doubled too. This meant he would need 10 magic crystals to reach Level 3. Gray placed the next 50-square plot of land right next to the first one. Then, he chose to grow a meat tree. The tree was so big that it took up 10 of the new squares at once, but Gray did not mind, he simply made it so 4 more trees filled the remaining space. He was just testing out different powers to see which ones he wanted to take to the next world anyway.
Gray continued feeding the magic crystals to his garden. He had bought 100 crystals for 100,000 Gold from his system shop. In total, he used 75 magic crystals to make his Home Garden reach Level 5. Once it hit Level 5, he unlocked more crops. He also got the ability to spawn fences to better protect his food. Gray remembered from the manga that the main character could eventually make huge castle walls to protect his garden. That ability would come in handy when he wanted to expand or make more safe places around the world.
Now at Level 5, he had 16 plots available with 50 squares each. Gray started putting different kinds of crops down, from vegetables to fruits. He made 50 squares of grapes. He also put out different trees, planting 5 orange trees, 5 lime trees, and 5 apple trees. He filled the remaining space with all kinds of different things. He knew it would take around an hour for them to be ready, so he simply teleported back to his house and started watching Moon Knight. Once he was halfway through the second episode, Gray paused it and teleported back down.
He knew that power was extremely overpowered, but seeing all the crops ready to be harvested amazed him. The trees were fully grown and their fruits were ready to be picked. Gray simply willed for the crops to be harvested. Like magic, all the crops, fruits, and meat self-harvested. Some big containers appeared and everything pretty much floated towards them. Gray did not have to do anything. Seeing the massive amount of fully harvested crops, Gray did not know what to do with them. He teleported to his house and walked towards the prison cell block.
Carol was busy making food for everyone. Gray walked up and asked, "Carol, can you help me with something real quick?"
Carol said, "Yeah, of course," and stopped what she was doing.
Gray told her, "Brace yourself, it can be a little disorienting at first." He simply held her hand and teleported with her to the underground space.
Carol held her head as she got a little bit dizzy, but it passed soon after. Once she came to, she noticed all the food in containers on the floor. Not only that, but a lot of meat was in there too. Gray had tested it before and noticed that each tree harvest gave around 20 pounds of meat. Since he had 5 of them, he harvested 100 pounds of meat in just an hour.
Gray looked at Carol and told her to use all of those fresh ingredients to make food for the prison. "I am going to make an above-ground garden just like this one later," Gray explained. "That way, you will always have fresh ingredients to test out new recipes on." He added that he had noticed people complaining about having the same food every single day, so this variety would be a really good change for everyone.
Gray then told Carol to start making space for all of the containers up in the kitchen. Carol looked at the mountain of food, then turned back to him. "Gray, we might need a lot more storage for all of this. Our current fridges are already completely full with the other supplies."
Gray nodded in understanding. He grabbed her hand again and teleported straight back into the main kitchen. Once they were inside, Gray opened his system shop and got two big, French-style fridges to appear right against the wall. They quickly plugged them into the kitchen’s electricity grid.
To move the rest of the supplies, Gray put his system inventory to good use. He teleported down to the basement, loaded the heavy food containers into his inventory slots, and teleported right back up to the kitchen floor. He did this loop three times in a row until every single container of fruits, vegetables, and meat was transferred.
Carol looked around her kitchen, seeing the counters and new fridges completely packed with fresh ingredients. She started getting really fired up to cook, especially when she closely inspected the items and noticed the perfect quality of everything. With all this food available, she was completely ready to make an absolute feast for the whole community tonight.
