Chapter 313: When The Sea Turns Hostile
The battle did not slow down, not even for a single breath, it only grew worse with every passing moment as the swarm of those ugly mermaid-like creatures kept pouring out from every direction like an endless tide that refused to stop.
The beautiful glowing forest that once looked calm and dreamlike had now completely turned into a slaughter field filled with broken bodies, splattered blue blood, and torn limbs scattered across the ground like discarded scraps.
The air was thick with the smell of iron mixed with something strange and salty, and every movement stirred up droplets of glowing liquid that clung to armor, skin, and weapons alike, making everything look wet and chaotic.
The sound of battle echoed everywhere, the sharp clash of weapons, the wet tearing of flesh, the dull thuds of bodies hitting the ground, and the constant shrill cries of those creatures as they rushed forward without fear, as if they did not care about death at all.
Sage and the others were no longer just fighting, they were cutting through everything in front of them like machines, moving without pause, their bodies already falling into a rhythm that was closer to instinct than thought.
Spells and weapons moved together, one covering the other, forming a deadly flow that crushed every wave that came at them, but even then, the pressure did not lessen, because for every creature that fell, more seemed to appear, rising from the glowing forest, dropping from above, or slipping through gaps in their formation like shadows.
The battlefield had turned into something brutal and raw, where there was no space for hesitation, no time to think, only movement, reaction, and survival.
Mina was still at the front, her small body completely soaked in blue blood, her shield moving again and again with explosive force as she slammed into anything that came too close, each hit sending bodies flying or bursting apart on impact, her earlier complaints about mermaids now replaced with pure focus as she shouted and pushed forward, her golden eyes sharp despite the chaos around her.
Brutus stood close by, his hammer moving in heavy arcs that crushed anything within reach, his large frame acting as a second wall behind Mina, catching anything that slipped past her and turning them into broken pieces with terrifying ease.
Every swing of his weapon created a deep thud that shook the ground beneath them, and even when several of the creatures rushed him at once, he did not move back, only stepping forward and smashing them aside like they weighed nothing.
Behind them, Gregor, Vanthrice, Caelis, and the rest of the Adventurers worked together to hold the formation steady, their attacks precise but no longer clean, because there were simply too many enemies to keep things neat.
Gregor’s blade flashed again and again, sending out arcs of compressed wind that cut through clusters of the creatures, but even he could not clear everything before the next wave came crashing in.
Vanthrice moved fast, her spear striking like lightning, piercing through one creature and then another, her movements tight and controlled, but her breathing was already heavier than before, showing that the constant pressure was starting to wear them down.
Caelis stayed near Sage, timing his support carefully, watching the flow of battle and stepping in whenever needed, but even he was beginning to show signs of strain, his movements slightly slower than they had been earlier.
Sage stood at the rear, his expression no longer relaxed, his eyes sharp as he watched everything at once, his mind moving quickly as he adjusted his spells and timing with each passing second.
Magic circles appeared around him one after another, glowing in different colors as he switched between elements without pause, fire, wind, lightning, each spell flowing into the next as if they were all part of a single continuous attack.
His fire spells exploded like bombs, burning through large groups at once, while his wind blades sliced through anything that tried to flank them, and his lightning strikes picked off faster enemies that tried to break through the formation.
The battlefield around him lit up again and again with flashes of light and bursts of power, each attack tearing through the swarm, but even with all that, it was not enough to stop the tide completely.
The ground was now filled with bodies, some still twitching, others already dissolving into the strange environment, but the creatures did not slow down, they kept coming, their numbers making up for their weakness, forcing Sage and the others to fight harder, faster, without rest.
Limbs flew through the air, blue blood sprayed across the glowing terrain, and the once beautiful forest now looked like a place of pure chaos and destruction, the soft blue light clashing with the violent scene unfolding within it.
Just then one of the Adventurers, who had been holding his position on the left side of the formation, made a small mistake, just a single moment where his focus slipped as he turned to strike one creature, leaving his side open for a fraction of a second, and that was all it took.
A mermaid creature shot forward from below, its spear moving faster than expected, slamming directly into his chest with a sickening crack. The impact was heavy, the force behind it far greater than the others, and his armor did nothing to stop it as his chest caved inward from the blow.
His body lifted off the ground as blood burst from his mouth, his eyes wide in shock as he was thrown backward like a broken doll.
"Watch out!" someone shouted, but it was already too late.
Before the creature could follow up and finish him off, Brutus moved.
He vanished from his position in a single step, appearing behind the falling Adventurer just in time to catch him with one hand, his grip steady despite the momentum, while his other hand swung his massive hammer in a brutal arc without hesitation.
The mermaid creature that had just attacked did not even have time to react before it was crushed into a paste, its body exploding under the force of the blow, spraying blue blood and broken flesh across the already soaked ground.
Brutus did not stop there, he stepped forward, placing the injured Adventurer behind him as he swung again, clearing another path, his face set in a grim expression as he held the line, refusing to let anything pass.
Sage saw all of this from the corner of his eye. His gaze sharpened instantly. The lightness from before disappeared completely.
"This is getting really hard now..." he muttered under his breath, his voice low but steady.
And he was right. Everything before this, the earlier places they had been dropped into, now felt like nothing compared to this. Those had been like tests, like warm-ups, places where the enemies were dangerous but manageable, where they could still move freely and control the pace of the fight.
But this... this was different. The deeper they went into the Vault, the more it felt like the rules were changing, the difficulty rising in a way that did not follow logic, the enemies becoming more aggressive, more unpredictable, and harder to deal with, not because of individual strength, but because of how they fought and how many of them there were.
And the worst part was that they could not properly judge them.
Outside, Magical Beasts had clear ranks, clear levels of strength, something they could measure and prepare for, but here, inside the Vault, everything was uncertain.
These creatures did not follow the same rules, their strength fluctuating, their behavior changing, making it hard to tell what they were truly dealing with until it was already too late.
Sage’s mind moved quickly as he cast another spell, a wide burst of fire that cleared space in front of them, his eyes scanning the battlefield, calculating, adjusting, thinking of how to maintain control before things got out of hand.
But before he could act further, something changed. The strange water-like sky above them rippled.
At first, it was subtle, like a small disturbance in a calm surface, but within seconds, it grew stronger, spreading outward in waves that distorted everything above them.
The glowing blue currents twisted unnaturally, the shapes of the fish-like creatures swimming within it scattering as if something massive had moved through their space. The entire sky seemed to shudder, the calm motion turning chaotic, like a storm building beneath the surface.
A deep, low roar, not from the ground, but from above, like an ocean collapsing in on itself.
Sage’s eyes widened slightly.
"Something’s wrong," he said sharply.
The others felt it too.The air grew heavy as the ground trembled an just then a massive surge of black water burst from the sky, not flowing like normal water, but crashing downward like a collapsing wave, covering everything in its path.
It did not behave like water at all, it moved like something alive, something heavy and overwhelming, and as it fell, it swallowed everything beneath it.
The mermaid creatures did not even have time to react. The moment the black water touched them, they were gone. Their bodies exploded instantly, turning into nothing but blood and fragments, crushed and erased as if they had never existed, the entire swarm wiped out in a single moment, their endless tide reduced to silence.
Sage and the others barely had time to process what happened. Because something else followed. From within that descending mass, a shadow moved.
A gigantic tentacle. It burst out of the black water, massive beyond belief, thick as a building, its surface dark and slick, covered in strange patterns that pulsed faintly as it moved.
It descended with overwhelming force, crashing down toward them like a falling pillar, tearing through the air with a sound that shook the entire space.
Everything froze for a split second.
And then....
