Chapter 864: Chapter 454: An Accidental Encounter with Beckett Wright
Opening the file, Joshua Hughes looked at the photos on it. On the parched, sallow face, the pair of eyes were always unfocused, the pupils a bit gray, looking like they belonged to a blind person.
No mistake, this was the person who appeared on the cruise, the one seen by the cruise manager on the second-floor deck. He dared to stir trouble for him; he was truly courting death.
"Who has he been in contact with these past few months?" Joshua stared at the few thin pages of the file, the contents nearly miraculous. But do such things truly exist in this world?
If it were one or two coincidences, fine, but this so-called master seems to communicate with the spirits, foresee life and death, reverse destiny. Who does he think he is? A god?
A cold smile touched Joshua’s lips; he never believed such things. He believed everything must be decided and controlled by himself; he only trusted himself.
"Joshua, it doesn’t matter who he’s been in contact with. The point is, it’s all targeted at you. To be blunt, it’s aimed at the people around you. Avery Jane is very dangerous now. This so-called Taoist Johnson is out there, pretending to be supernatural, saying there’s a ghost around you that can’t be dispersed and it’s attached to Avery Jane. So everything is aimed at Avery Jane; that’s as much as I’ve been able to find." Alexander King’s eyes flickered, a trace of confusion flashed through his eyes, too quick to notice.
He hesitated for a long time, ultimately not telling Joshua. He knew how much Joshua valued Avery Jane right now. Mentioning it now would be like adding fuel to the fire, and if their relationship truly broke that would be a sight none wished to see.
Taoist Johnson? He’s a fraud, isn’t he? This kind of street sorcerer, this kind of trickster, daring to use his name to swindle everywhere; truly, he’s tired of living.
"Joshua, what are you planning to do? The woman in your old mansion is about to give birth. If the Hughes Family holds a wedding, it’ll surely rock the city. Can you hide it from Avery Jane?" He wasn’t clear what had transpired between Joshua and Avery Jane, but lately Joshua had changed completely.
:"My woman is none of your concern. What you should worry about is getting your men to clear this matter up as quickly as possible." Joshua sat on the sofa, evidently displeased with his good friend’s concern for Avery Jane.
"Damn it, Joshua, you don’t think I have a thing for Avery Jane, do you?" Joshua’s tone was unpleasant, making Alexander King so angry he nearly spat blood. Surely this guy isn’t just overthinking.
"Of course not, you’re clearly already hanging yourself on Nora Thompson now. Word is, you’re almost moving into her place, right?" Joshua didn’t even glance at him; it was simply a woman, and an already married woman at that—how could he not deal with her, making him feel ashamed for him.
If he held a real marriage certificate, would he be this agitated? If he and Avery Jane were already husband and wife, he wouldn’t be like Alexander King.
:"You should worry about who’s the mastermind. With your speed, you shouldn’t be unable to find out. King, are you hiding something from me?" Joshua’s eyes swept over Alexander King like searchlights, his handsome face still wearing that annoying expression. Right now, Joshua’s entire energy was focused on business, with many shady dealings handled by Alexander King, even some underground intelligence networks run by Alexander King, so certain things were more convenient for him to manage.
"If she were willing to let me hang myself on her, I’d welcome it." Alexander King was already at his wit’s end with his nominal wife.
From playing the sympathy card to the handsome man tactic, he’d tried every ploy he could think of, yet Miss Thompson consistently maintained her demeanor as a genteel lady, always polite and proper, making him crash against a wall of soft tofu every time—it was infuriating beyond measure.
"King, I can only give you three more days. After three days, you need to bring the mastermind before me." Joshua put away his joking tone. He determined that Alexander King must have discovered something, but not stating it clearly was perhaps just to avoid hurting him.
Alexander King wasn’t the type to betray him. If he didn’t speak, there was only one reason: he didn’t want to make things hard for Joshua.
The two men, each harboring thoughts, sat in the office smoking, the cigarettes clasped between their fingers wafting smoke, filling the room with that uniquely hypnotic, alluring scent of cigarettes.....
