Chapter 42: Bloodthirst Frenzy, Stack the Buffs!
The Bloodrage Tyrant went completely berserk.
It opened its jaws, and a blood red sphere the size of a basketball began condensing deep in its throat.
Its innate skill.
Bloody Roar.
Once released, everything within a hundred meters would be shattered.
Now.
A terrifying wave of Mental Force erupted from Joren’s brow.
Rank Two Mental Force.
Full output.
It slammed straight into the Tyrant’s throat while the energy was still gathering.
"Explode."
The six throwing knives linked tip to tail, forming a black drill that plunged into the open mouth.
Boom!
The energy sphere detonated early.
Inside its own mouth.
Half the Tyrant’s jaw vanished in the blast. Flesh and blood sprayed everywhere.
[Insight triggered. Weak point locked.]
A red critical point flared into view.
Blindingly bright.
Joren gripped the blade with both hands, his body drawn back like a full moon bow.
Strength.
Will.
Killing intent.
Everything gathered on the edge.
"Breath Severing Slash!"
Black blade light flashed like dark lightning.
The edge followed the wound he had opened earlier, tearing through hard muscle without slowing. It split the breastbone, drove deeper, then buried itself in the heart pounding inside.
The scarlet light in the Tyrant’s eyes went out.
[Ding! Killed Rank Four commander, Bloodrage Tyrant.]
[Gained Bloodstars: 1000.]
[Detected plunderable Talent...]
"Plunder."
[Undying Body] could heal his wounds, but every recovery burned Vital Force.
This new Talent filled that weakness perfectly.
The 1000 Bloodstars vanished.
[Plunder successful.]
[Obtained blue Talent: Bloodthirst Frenzy]
[Entry Description: The battlefield is your fuel station. Blood is your stimulant. Born for battle. Only death brings rest.]
[Effect: Each enemy killed temporarily increases strength and speed by 1 percent, stacking up to 500 percent. Killing an enemy also restores a large amount of stamina and a small amount of Mental Force.]
His nearly empty Vital Force recovered by more than half in an instant.
What replaced the exhaustion was something sharper.
The urge to kill.
A side effect of [Bloodthirst Frenzy].
Or perhaps a benefit.
Joren pulled the Black Gold blade from the corpse and flicked the blood from its edge.
Then he turned toward the dust rolling across the distance.
More than a dozen Rank Four lords were still coming.
Behind them, lower level Voidbeasts without end.
A cruel, feverish curve slowly formed at the corner of his mouth.
"Time to stack buffs."
"I hope there are enough of you..."
"To keep me busy."
Standing beside the Bloodrage Tyrant’s enormous corpse, Joren reached into empty air with one hand.
Buzz.
Several weak whistles came through the air.
Six twisted scraps of metal dragged themselves toward him, wobbling badly, then fell to the ground with a clatter.
The Nightshade throwing knives.
That last internal detonation had been pushed for maximum destruction. It had blown apart the Tyrant’s jaw and throat, but the set of psionic weapons worth 500 Military Merit was now ruined.
"What a waste."
Still, trading 500 Military Merit for the life of a Rank Four commander, a blue Talent, and 1000 Bloodstars?
An outrageous profit.
Joren opened the tactical watch and checked the Store.
His gaze moved across the absurdly expensive high level psionic weapons.
[S 5 Type Voidsplitter Shuttle. Price: 5000 Military Merit.]
[SS Class Heavenweb Psionic Disc. Price: 30000 Military Merit.]
There was even the legendary liquid metal series.
The prices ended in strings of zeroes.
He would have to save up.
But for the current him, those prices no longer felt unreachable.
Joren looked up at the dust filling the horizon.
Walking Military Merit.
Mountains of Bloodstars.
A battlefield full of withdrawals waiting to be made.
"No throwing knives means the pace might slow down."
He gripped the Black Gold blade behind him and rolled his wrist once.
A strange scarlet color gradually surfaced in his eyes.
[Bloodthirst Frenzy] was waking.
Boom!
Joren plunged into the dense lower level beast swarm on the flank.
A mixed army of Rank Two and Rank Three Voidbeasts.
In other words, cannon fodder.
The Rank Two Ironclad Boar at the front barely had time to register the black blur rushing toward it.
Its huge head flew into the air.
Blood erupted from the neck.
[Killed Rank Two Voidbeast, Ironclad Boar. Gained Bloodstars: 20.]
[Bloodthirst Frenzy triggered. Current stacks: 1/500.]
[All attributes increased by 1 percent.]
A fan of black blade force swept outward.
More than a dozen Rank Two Windwolves closing in around him were cut apart at the waist.
[Killed Rank Two Voidbeast, Windwolf. Gained Bloodstars: 20.]
[Killed Rank Two Voidbeast, Windwolf. Gained Bloodstars: 20.]
[Bloodthirst Frenzy triggered. Current stacks: 15/500.]
[All attributes increased by 15 percent.]
Without the throwing knives to control the field from range, Joren became something simpler.
A monster built for close combat.
Pfft. Pfft. Pfft. Pfft.
The sound of steel entering flesh came so fast it resembled heavy rain.
Joren tore through the Beast Tide, leaving only severed bodies and streams of blood behind him.
[Current stacks: 50/500.]
[Current stacks: 100/500.]
The moment the kill count passed one hundred, his aura changed.
All attributes increased by 100 percent.
Boom!
Joren kicked forward.
A huge Rank Three black bear took the blow square in the chest.
Its breastbone collapsed.
Dead instantly.
The corpse flew dozens of meters like a broken sack, smashing through a line of lower level Voidbeasts before hitting the ground.
System prompts rang without pause.
Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding.
Still not enough.
Five hundred stacks was a long way off.
