Chapter 35: The Frontier!
Northern defense line.
Voidbeasts roared as they trampled over the corpses of their own kind and crashed against the defensive line again and again.
Artillery thunder shook the ears numb. Every second, tons of ammunition poured down, bursting through the beast swarm in blooms of flesh and blood.
But there were too many Voidbeasts.
So many it crushed the heart.
The air reeked of gunpowder and rotting blood. Even the sky above had been stained a dark red.
"Hold the line! Hold it!"
"Breach in Zone C! Get over there! Where is support? Where the hell is support?"
On the wall, the commander’s hoarse shouts vanished beneath the barrage.
Then.
A streak of black lightning tore through the smoke and dust on the outer ring road.
A heavy motorcycle.
The engine had already been pushed into the red, screaming as if it might tear itself apart at any moment.
"Who is that?"
An observer on the wall froze.
When the rider was still a hundred meters from the Beast Tide, he yanked the front of the bike up. The motorcycle flew into the air. The black clad figure released the handlebars and launched himself off it like a hawk diving for prey.
The motorcycle smashed into the beast swarm with a roar, and the blast overturned several Rank One Voidbeasts.
The figure above it glided through the air in an impossible arc.
[Talent: Lithe Form active effect activated]
Windriding!
Joren adjusted his body midair. His toes tapped at empty space, as if stepping on an invisible current, and he completed a second jump in the sky.
From above, his gaze swept over the packed heads of Voidbeasts below.
Rows and rows of numbers waiting to move.
"All money."
Joren licked his dry lips.
His right hand gave a light flick.
No earth shaking roar.
No brilliant burst of light.
Only six nearly invisible black lines slipped from the sheath at his waist.
Silent.
Weightless.
More than a dozen Rank One Rockhide Boars lunging at him with jaws wide suddenly stiffened.
Their savage heads rolled off together.
The cuts were smooth as mirrors.
[Killed Rank One Voidbeast, Rockhide Boar. Gained Bloodstars: 10.]
[Killed Rank One Voidbeast, Rockhide Boar. Gained Bloodstars: 10.]
[Killed Rank One Voidbeast...]
System prompts flooded through his mind.
Joren sank into the Beast Tide like a drop of ink spreading through clear water.
Where he passed, Voidbeasts fell in sheets.
An ordinary Awakened Warrior, even a peak Rank Two, would be torn apart by exhaustion in a Beast Tide this dense.
Joren only had to stand there.
A thought.
The six throwing knives became sickles of death, harvesting everything within fifty meters.
His gaze passed over layer after layer of beasts and locked onto several huge shapes in the distance.
Rank Two Voidbeasts.
That was the real meal.
Joren pushed off the ground and skimmed over the backs of the beast swarm like a ghost.
With Lithe Form, he moved across them as if walking over flat land. No matter how many Voidbeasts surged in around him, they turned into corpses in the next breath.
He glanced at the panel.
In just five minutes, his Bloodstars had surged by three hundred.
"System."
"Add points."
The thought flashed through his mind.
On a battlefield where danger could come from any direction, points only mattered once they became real power.
His sight locked onto [Solar Crucible Method].
Current progress: 80/100.
"Consume 20 Bloodstars to improve Solar Crucible Method!"
The muscle fibers in his body, already tough beyond ordinary limits, contracted and rebuilt themselves madly, becoming denser, stronger, touched with a faint metallic sheen.
Solar Crucible Method.
Mortal Perfection.
Joren clenched his fist.
The air burst in his palm with a crisp pop.
Peak Rank One.
He lifted his head and looked toward the enormous Rank Two Voidbeast in the distance.
Ironback Bear.
The beast was swinging its huge paw, smashing a human soldier into bloody paste.
[Consume 200 Bloodstars to break through to Rank Two?]
Killing intent surged in Joren’s eyes.
"Break."
His will struck the system panel like a blade.
"Consume 200 Bloodstars. Break through."
Rumble.
It felt as if an invisible shackle had been torn apart by brute force.
Gene lock.
Broken.
A terrifying aura erupted from Joren and swept outward.
Rank Two Warrior.
In that instant, his strength, speed, and reaction nerves all doubled.
A large Black Armored Wolf leader seemed to sense the threat from him. It roared and pounced.
Its speed was extreme. Its claws tore through the air with a shrill scream.
The foul mouth was less than half a meter from his throat.
Ahh!
A miserable cry ripped into the sky.
A dagger stuck in the ground, once belonging to a fallen soldier, turned into a streak of silver lightning.
It pierced straight through the Black Armored Wolf leader’s eye socket and burst out the back of its skull, dragging red and white matter behind it.
The beast collapsed weakly.
From beginning to end, Joren kept both hands in his pockets.
His eyelids did not even move.
This was the terror of a Psionic Master.
Far away, the observer on the defense tower had gone rigid.
His trembling finger pointed at the young figure standing amid mountains of corpses and seas of blood.
"Killing through object control? Psionic Master?"
"And a Psionic Master charging with a combat blade?"
In this world, Psionic Masters were precious, but most of them had weak bodies and stayed in the rear for ranged attacks.
Someone like Joren, who could withstand the Beast Tide head on with his body while controlling weapons to kill...
They had never heard of it.
The Black Gold blade carved a near full moon arc through the air.
Pfft.
A Rank Two Shadow Leopard trying to ambush him was cut in half at the waist.
Warm beast blood splashed across Joren’s face, carrying a sickening sweet stench.
His dopamine boiled over completely.
Rank Two Warrior.
This feeling was too good.
If his body at Rank One had been a Ford Mustang, then now he was a heavy tank loaded with an aircraft engine.
[Killed Rank Two Voidbeast, Shadow Leopard. Gained Bloodstars: 80.]
[Killed Rank Two Voidbeast, Ironclad Bull. Gained Bloodstars: 120.]
The prompts in his mind beat like dense war drums.
He was a burning blade, red hot and vicious, stabbing straight into the thickest belly of the Beast Tide.
