Chapter 30: Battle

"Compared to the fire-breathing wolf, this monster is on another level..."

Cole concluded after watching the first contact between the two fights. Ahead, the fire-breathing wolves whimpered out loud while backing away, fear clear in their eyes. Before they could even summon their fire, the Tempest Wolf’s lightning tore their bodies, burning fur and blood vessels to a crisp.

A single Tempest Wolf was easily able to deal with multiple fire-breathing wolves on its own. It wasn’t called an apex predator for no reason.

Ethan was also watching everything play out. When he realized the fire-breathing wolves that he had been relying on all this time were crushed in the first second, all color drained from his face. Beads of sweat appeared all over his forehead, slowly rolling down onto the ground.

"This can’t be happening... Fire-breathing wolves were trained since young, robust enough to deal with any danger..."

It was then—

Rumble!

For a moment, their surroundings lit up completely white as a massive lightning dragon tore through the sky, ripping the cloudy heavens open to reveal the large scene above. Ethan and Cole, standing hundreds of meters below, felt their skin crawl.

What was that...?

For a moment, Cole completely forgot about the threat of the Tempest Wolf. His eyes narrowed to thin needles as he stared at the sky above. He might be able to deal with the Tempest Wolf somehow, but if he were hit by a lightning bolt of such a scale and magnitude, not even his ashes would be left.

Turning to Ethan, he wanted to ask what had caused that sudden surge in the storm, but before he could do that, a Tempest Wolf tore through the fire-breathing wolves and charged straight in his direction.

A charging Tempest Wolf was no joke. Its massive ten-meter physique carried terrifying momentum. As its six legs pounded on the earth, it made one feel as if just one step from it would reduce an entire body to meat paste. There was no need to say anything about the torrent of lightning current flowing out in pulsing arcs, cutting through air and stone.

Ethan simply closed his eyes. The sight of the Tempest Wolf truly terrified him to the core.

Cole happened to look at his behavior and could not stop himself from complaining inwardly.

Brother, you are a regular in the Thunder Domain. How come you are not prepared to deal with such a hulking monster...?

Although he said those words in his head, he could absolutely imagine Ethan’s fear. If it weren’t for the A.I. chip regulating his emotions, his reaction would be similar to, if not worse than, Ethan’s.

While for Ethan dealing with such a monster would be a fearful occurrence, Cole was someone who had lived in a normal world, enjoying his life, and now he was forced to deal with a three-story monster out of nowhere.

Anyone would be overwhelmed.

But now was not the time to think about all these useless things. First, he needed to lure this wolf away from the chariot. He did not want to destroy the very thing that could protect them from the lightning bolts raining down.

"Hey, you stupid wolf, try me!"

Cole roared loudly and ran in the complete opposite direction of the chariot. It wasn’t clear whether the Tempest Wolf could understand human language or whether from the very start its target was Cole itself, but the wolf followed him.

Its six feet completely crushed the burned earth, creating massive craters wherever its legs landed.

Cole’s actions also attracted Ethan’s and his elder sister Jessica’s attention. Though she was in the middle of curing herself, the massive threat in the form of the Tempest Wolf had not gone unnoticed.

Jessica was already prepared to get up at any moment and face the Tempest Wolf when Cole moved.

...

What is this sword even going to do to the monster...?

Although his strength had increased considerably, compared to the wolf, it might not be enough.

With all these thoughts in mind, Cole ruled out a direct confrontation. But before he could think of a proper strategy, the Tempest Wolf was already on his back.

Damn it, so fast...

For a creature of its size, the wolf was insanely fast, defying common sense. The larger the creature, the longer it should take for the brain’s signals to reach all the muscles, but it seemed that in this world, brain signals traveled at a speed faster than electricity.

Cole gritted his teeth and commanded through clenched teeth,

"A.I. chip, start simulating battle against the Tempest Wolf. Do a hundred rough simulations..."

Although at first he had wanted to do a million simulations to make sure, now was not the time. A million simulations were just too much. He did not have that much time.

[Processing request...]

Cole had barely blinked when the concise result of the hundred simulations was uploaded directly into his brain. The result was not perfect, as he did not have enough data, but it could still be trusted.

This will do...

Suddenly, the look in Cole’s eyes sharpened.

This will do.

He hurriedly turned back, gulping down a mana potion through his throat. Immediately, the yellow veins on his body flared outward. Cole felt his body start heating up as it rejected the mana flowing through his veins. For a moment, his eyes turned crimson.

From all these things, one thing was clear — if he did not cast the spell or use the mana to reinforce the body, he would explode from overload.

Thankfully, he could easily cross the first threshold which many struggled to cross and died in the process.

Casting a spell was a long process, requiring mental focus, attention, and coordination. Few mages who were just starting out would take too long to cast the spell and would either die from mana overload as the mana stayed in their veins for too long, or even if they survived that, the enemy would kill them.

But none of those challenges posed any issue for Cole.

He blinked and flicked his wrist, and immediately dozens of chains made from pure lightning appeared, wrapping around the Tempest Wolf and halting its advance for a moment.

This is my chance...

Cole did not stop to celebrate. In all the hundred simulations, the only strategy that gave any chance of success was this: first stop the wolf with the Lightning Web, then attack its weak spot.

Going over that step in his head, Cole tightened the grip on the sword.
