Chapter 74: Chapter 74: One Year Later, Class 4 Rei-i!
Chapter 74: One Year Later, Class 4 Rei-i!
"You bastards! How many times do I have to tell you? If you want to stay in the Penitence Palace, you don’t need to go to such lengths! Just tell me directly, and I’ll write you an approval slip right now!"
Inside the 1st Division barracks, Yato Uchiha knelt on one knee behind Kisuke Urahara, stealthily peeking at Hiyori Sarugaki and Mayuri Kurotsuchi.
The blonde Lieutenant looked utterly miserable, holding her breath and not daring to talk back. The eccentric scientist, however, had thick skin and played innocent, acting as if he didn’t know anything.
The corners of Yato’s mouth twitched into a grin, but he quickly suppressed it. Head Captain Yamamoto was furious; playing ostrich was the best option right now.
"Tell me, Kisuke Urahara, it’s been almost two years since you became a Captain. In such a short time, how many times have you been called to the 1st Division?"
The Captain of the 12th Division continued to laugh foolishly, bowing and scraping as he admitted his mistakes.
"You’re all a bunch of bastards!" The Head Captain’s beard trembled with rage. "After being rejected, you actually went ahead and secretly established the Spirit Wave Measurement and Research Department on your own... A dignified Captain, Lieutenant, 3rd Seat, and 4th Seat, all keeping secrets from me and the 1st Division!"
"My apologies, Head Captain," Kisuke Urahara said, demonstrating considerable loyalty by taking all the blame upon himself. "It was due to my orders that they didn’t reveal the situation regarding the Spirit Wave Measurement and Research Department to the 1st Division."
"Hmph, spare me the act, Kisuke Urahara... I will only ask you one thing. Two years ago, right in this very room, you swore an oath upon your Zanpakuto in front of me, vowing to dedicate everything you have as the Captain of the 12th Division to protect the One King and the Five Nobles!"
Old man Yamamoto’s tone became extremely serious. "Does everything you’ve done over these past two years align with that oath?"
"Of course!" Kisuke Urahara sighed and carefully explained. "The establishment of the Spirit Wave Measurement and Research Department was fundamentally an essential part of the SRDI system. In my vision, bringing all anomalous Spiritual Pressure fluctuations from the Soul Society, Hueco Mundo, and the World of the Living under observation is the best method of defense! As for whether it intrudes upon the private domains of other divisions..."
The Captain, who had been in office for two years, paused before continuing, "Everything is for the sake of the Seireitei."
Yato Uchiha stroked Akame’s hilt out of boredom; he didn’t feel strongly about that statement.
However, old man Yamamoto seemed somewhat moved. After a long silence, his attitude softened slightly. "But no matter what, you cannot privately establish such a dangerous department."
"It’s not a private establishment, Head Captain. Over the past year, all Spiritual Pressure fluctuation maps generated by the Spirit Wave Measurement and Research Department have been backed up and can be submitted to the 1st Division for review at any time!"
"...Hmph."
Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto raised a hand, stroking his snow-white beard as he spoke in a neutral tone, "From now on, these backups must continue, and the reviews will be conducted on schedule. Have your Lieutenant discuss it with Chojiro and draw up a plan."
With a single order, the Spirit Wave Measurement and Research Department was brought to the forefront, officially granted recognition.
"Yes! Thank you, Head Captain!"
Kisuke Urahara let out a long sigh of relief and bowed deeply. His three subordinates followed suit, showering Yamamoto with praise.
Although he pinched his nose and reluctantly agreed to the SRDI’s actions, the Head Captain still grumpily kicked the four members of the 12th Division out.
As he grew older, Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto’s behavior increasingly resembled that of an elderly man with clear-cut likes and dislikes.
The monster from nine hundred years ago, who would incinerate everything just to annihilate his enemies, seemed to no longer reside in the Soul Society.
...
"Hah, Head Captain Yamamoto is wise as always!"
On the clean path outside the 1st Division, Kisuke Urahara walked ahead with a chuckle, even his pale blonde hair seeming to radiate a cheerful glow.
"You bald bastard!" Hiyori Sarugaki cursed at him, lingering fear still evident in her voice. "Weren’t you scared?! Defying the Head Captain’s orders... we almost got to see Ryujin Jakka!"
"How could that happen? But even if things escalated to that point, it wouldn’t matter. My Benihime could at least block one strike, and then I’d just have Yato use Kamui to take you guys away, haha..."
"Baldy! Idiot!" Even though Hiyori was short-tempered, combative, and usually fierce, she absolutely did not possess Kisuke Urahara’s sky-high audacity. She quickly rushed up and kicked her Captain, stopping him from spouting any more nonsense.
Yato Uchiha and Mayuri Kurotsuchi trailed behind. Following the rules of the Seireitei, they maintained a respectful distance to show deference to the Captain class.
Because Yato had brutally beaten him before, Mayuri basically didn’t communicate with the 3rd Seat outside of work matters. The youth was perfectly happy with the peace and quiet, walking on his own.
A full year had passed since his first spatial teleportation into the Great Spirit Book Gallery using the power of his "External Eye."
It had been nearly two years since the day Kisuke Urahara became the Captain of the 12th Division.
The SRDI was running smoothly and had gradually become a household name—a colossal entity within the Soul Society. Departments that would become prominent in the future timeline, like the Communications and Technology Research Department, were already functioning.
During this time, Yato Uchiha’s life had been quite colorful.
Despite adding the title of Head of the Capture Department to his 3rd Seat duties, his workload hadn’t increased; in fact, it had decreased.
Kisuke Urahara was a man who excelled at using his brain. By restructuring the scope of their work, the relevant Seated Officers and squad members of the 12th Division all received a certain degree of burden reduction.
Yato was still the same, living his double-agent life and staying busy on both ends.
Nowadays, however, he would occasionally use Kamui to visit the Great Spirit Book Gallery, uncovering the secrets of the Soul Society and searching for the profound mysteries of training and cultivation.
Of course, these visits to the Great Spirit Book Gallery had to be timed precisely on the days Shingo Tsunayashiro was on shift, and he couldn’t go too frequently, or he would definitely be discovered.
Even so, Yato Uchiha’s rate of progress was incredibly fast.
Half a year ago, his Spiritual Pressure achieved a breakthrough, reaching Class 4 Rei-i!
In the Soul Society, this was the highest level below Captain. One step further up—breaking into Class 3 Rei-i—and he could attempt Bankai, engraving his name in the history of the Soul Society!
Yato Uchiha’s breakthrough had caused quite a stir. Class 4 Rei-i combined with an extremely rare Multi-Stage Release Zanpakuto had subtly earned him the title of "Strongest Below Captain."
If Yato wasn’t so thoroughly disinterested in the medical division, he would have already been made the Lieutenant of the 4th Division by now.
"There’s another reason. That woman, Retsu Unohana, is just too crazy. I’m really afraid she might have a mental breakdown one day..."
On the clean path outside the 1st Division, Yato Uchiha walked with his hands behind his head, his thoughts drifting far away.
Just then, music suddenly began to play around the 1st Division barracks.
The four members of the 12th Division had anticipated this, so they weren’t surprised.
"Jazz music again... Who’s in charge of broadcasting music for the 1st Division again? I think it’s the 7th Seat, Tomohiko Uchida, right? He really likes this genre."
Kisuke Urahara rubbed the stubble on his chin, his tone cryptic. "Time flies. I didn’t expect that after only two years, I’d be attending someone else’s inauguration ceremony."
Was two years fast?
Yato chuckled internally, knowing exactly what his Captain was mocking.
After two whole years, the farce surrounding the 10th Division finally seemed to be drawing to a close.
Tomorrow was the inauguration ceremony for the new Captain of the 10th Division, Kazuo Shiba.
