Chapter 63: The Days of Working Part-Time at the 4th Division
"Yo? You’re leaving the comprehensive relief station today? What a coincidence, it just so happens that I am the one giving you your final treatment."
"...You bastard, you didn’t purposely come to the 4th Division just to corner me, did you?"
"What are you talking about, 4th Seat Kurotsuchi." Yato Uchiha bared his teeth in a grin:
"Unity and camaraderie are the excellent virtues Captain Urahara constantly advocates."
With that, before Mayuri Kurotsuchi could reply, Yato slapped his hand flat against Mayuri’s chest.
The brilliance of Kaido flowed between the two of them, repairing Mayuri’s body at a cellular level.
The bizarre and highly intelligent 4th Seat furrowed his brows tightly. He opened his mouth, but ultimately said nothing.
Seeing his reaction, Yato Uchiha knew that although his Kaido still brought some pain, the level of agony had already dropped significantly compared to before.
Otherwise, given Mayuri’s temper, he would have struck back ages ago.
"Mm, you’ve recovered quite nicely." After a long while, Yato withdrew his arm:
"After you’re discharged, don’t overexert yourself, and absolutely do not pull any all-nighters... But I guess you probably won’t listen to me anyway. You and Captain Urahara are exactly the same; you both practically want to live in the laboratory."
"Hmph."
Mayuri Kurotsuchi threw his Shihakusho over his shoulders, picked up his Zanpakuto that was snapped in two, and left the comprehensive relief station without looking back.
Yato shook his head and ignored him, heading to the next clinic room as instructed by Unohana Retsu.
This was his second day "working part-time" in the 4th Division. Under the guidance of Unohana, a master of Kaido, Yato quickly grasped the trick to reducing the sensation of pain.
His Kaido already possessed excellent healing efficacy; now that this major drawback had been eliminated, Unohana immediately assigned him to treat patients. It seemed Seinosuke Yamada’s resignation had indeed caused the 4th Division Captain quite a headache.
In any world, high-level medical resources are always scarce.
This busyness lasted deep into the night.
When an exhausted Yato arrived at the 4th Division’s Captain’s office, Unohana Retsu was already waiting for him.
"Drink this." The 4th Division Captain pushed the cup in front of her forward with a smile:
"A coffee specially blended by me."
"Thank you, Captain Unohana."
Like a cow chewing on peonies, the boy downed it all in one massive gulp. He smacked his lips for a long time before speaking hesitantly:
"What a strange taste. Is this flavor very popular right now?"
"Something extra was added. It’s the crystallized distillate of Jinja (Were-Snake) blood."
"Eh? I’ve only ever heard of the Jinro (Werewolf) clan in the Soul Society. Were-Snakes actually exist too?"
"There were many around when I was young. Unfortunately, the Jinja clan was hunted to extinction. What was brewed into that coffee was from my private collection."
"Wow, what commandment did they break? Or did the Seireitei discover them secretly aiding the Quincy?"
"Neither." A faint, almost imperceptible smile surfaced on Unohana Retsu’s beautiful face:
"It is said that their blood is highly beneficial to men."
"..."
The 4th Division Captain retrieved the cup and pulled out a standard anatomical model from behind her, clearing her throat lightly:
"Alright, back to business. You have begun to grasp true Kaido, but if you want to progress further, you must start learning the foundational physiological knowledge of souls."
"Nerves, retinas, blood vessels, internal organs, bones, cells—how they are formed under the composition of spirit particles..."
Late at night in the Captain’s office, Unohana gently and patiently imparted the true meaning of medical treatment. The boy listened earnestly. Outside the window, it was pitch black; only this room remained brightly lit.
...
The following two months were undoubtedly the busiest period of Yato Uchiha’s life since becoming a Soul Reaper.
During the day, he handled a massive amount of affairs as the 3rd Seat of the 12th Division. At night, he went to the 4th Division to "work part-time," treating patients before receiving instruction from Unohana Retsu.
On top of that, he occasionally had to run field errands—Sosuke Aizen would assign him tasks, and the SRDI also needed him, as the Head of the Capture Department, to hunt in Hueco Mundo.
From the moment he opened his eyes until he closed them, he was overwhelmingly busy, without a single moment of rest.
Of course, Yato himself reaped rewards. In terms of Kaido, he was now capable of healing himself, and could even personally perform surgeries!
With the aid of the Sharingan, the precision of his surgeries rivaled that of the high-ranking Seated Officers of the 4th Division; it was as if he was born for this profession.
Unohana Retsu was extremely satisfied with his performance. She even specifically asked if he would like to take over Seinosuke Yamada’s position and become the Lieutenant of the 4th Division.
Without giving it much thought, Yato apologetically declined Unohana’s olive branch.
"You really are mesmerized by slaughter, aren’t you, Yato-kun."
The 4th Division Captain had only smiled at the time, dropping that sentence and never bringing it up again.
Time flowed by in this busy daily routine until one day, Genshiro Okikiba appeared before him.
The 3rd Seat of the 1st Division brought him two orders.
"Lord Captain-Commander says that your performance during this period has been exceedingly outstanding. From now on, you no longer need to go to the 4th Division; you may concentrate solely on the affairs of the 12th Division."
"Secondly, the authorization from Central 46 has been approved. Tomorrow morning, someone will escort you to the Great Spirit Book Gallery."
Hearing this, Yato Uchiha let out a heavy sigh of relief. He finally didn’t have to run back and forth anymore.
Bidding farewell to Genshiro Okikiba, the boy went to the 4th Division to tell Unohana Retsu the news and thank her for her guidance during this period. Finally, he found Kisuke Urahara and asked about the taboos surrounding the Great Spirit Book Gallery.
"You’ve certainly asked the right person!" The Captain, whose chin was now sprouting stubble, tinkered with the joints of a new Gigai model. Looking up, he laughed:
"In the current Gotei 13, there is likely no one who has been there more times than I have."
"Hm? Captain Urahara, is it really that difficult to go to the Great Spirit Book Gallery?"
"It’s far beyond just ’difficult’... Yato, hand me the smallest rasp file. Yes, that one." Kisuke Urahara multitasked, sighing:
"The Great Spirit Book Gallery is located in the underground assembly hall of Central 46, and it is controlled by the Tsunayashiro family... That family is far more difficult to deal with than the Kuchiki, Shihoin, or Shiba clans."
"If one wishes to visit the Great Spirit Book Gallery, they must submit an application to the Tsunayashiro family and obtain authorization documents from Central 46."
"Only one person is permitted per visit, and the innermost gatekeeper is a core member of the Tsunayashiro family. If they notice any abnormalities, a self-destruct sequence is triggered immediately!"
"Furthermore, the external defense system is utterly terrifying, jointly established by Captain-Commander Yamamoto, the Kido Corps, and the Stealth Force. The level of security is comparable to Muken."
"Even if you receive authorization, you must surrender your Zanpakuto before entering. The materials you consult must strictly align with your submitted record; you cannot search for other information arbitrarily."
"I was only fortunate enough to enter a few times in the past by relying on Yoruichi’s family. Cherish this opportunity well, Yato. The next time you go might be a few hundred years from now."
Yato thanked his Captain, returned to his quarters, and fell into a deep sleep, his mind lingering on the Great Spirit Book Gallery.
Early the next morning, just as he finished washing up, a squad member came to inform him that someone was looking for him outside.
Yato nodded, put on his Shihakusho, and walked to the main gates of the 12th Division.
Standing outside was a young man. He had pale skin, a slightly cold expression, and although he looked fairly refined, there was an underlying sense of arrogance about him. The Kenseikan in his hair swayed in the wind, emitting clear, tinkling chimes.
—It was a member of the Tsunayashiro family!
