Chapter 62: Uchiha and Unohana

Facts proved that, for the 12th Division alone, the buildings Yato Uchiha collapsed didn’t cause too much of an impact.

The establishment of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute was a massive undertaking. Many of the 12th Division’s buildings needed to be expanded and rebuilt anyway; the destruction caused during the battle actually saved them a lot of trouble.

Kisuke Urahara had to go to Central 46 to present his self-reflection report. He had been constantly running to the 2nd Division these past few days, discussing who-knows-what with Yoruichi Shihoin. Mayuri Kurotsuchi was still lying in the comprehensive relief station. As a result, the management of the 12th Division fell squarely onto the shoulders of Hiyori and Yato.

The two of them were familiar with this work, and since the majority of the division consisted of researchers who didn’t go on field missions, they were very easy to manage. During this period, no issues arose.

Of course, both of them were combat-oriented high-ranking Soul Reapers who knew absolutely nothing about scientific research and development. They couldn’t manage it even if they wanted to, so they simply let the subordinates do their own thing.

Perhaps this hands-off leadership style suited the researchers’ preferences better. Not only did the scheduled research tasks not fall behind, they were actually completed slightly ahead of schedule. The team atmosphere was quite excellent.

However, Yato Uchiha’s mood was not nearly as wonderful as the squad members’.

Because today was the day he had to go "work part-time" at the 4th Division.

Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto’s punishment was "allocate ten days out of every month to the 4th Division." Theoretically, any day would work, and it was entirely up to Yato to schedule.

But Yato was, after all, the 3rd Seat. Holding a high position, the burdens on his shoulders were not light. When he went over had to be communicated in advance with the Seated Officers of the 4th Division, proceeding according to a schedule.

"What must come, will eventually come."

This evening, after finishing his duties in the 12th Division, Yato Uchiha checked the sky, gave a few instructions to the Seated Officers beneath him, and headed off to the 4th Division as if marching to the execution grounds.

Because of the previous Ryoka incident, Yato had lain in bed here for half a month, making him highly familiar with the 4th Division’s layout.

This division, responsible for the medical treatment and logistical supply of the Seireitei, covered the largest area of any division in the Gotei 13. It boasted fourteen oversized platoons and administered multiple facilities, including the comprehensive relief station, the Seated Officer clinic, special care wards, and the medical research and development center.

Because patients recuperated here, the air in the 4th Division was always fresh. There was no smell of disinfectant; instead, a very faint scent of bellflowers lingered.

Of course... this could also just be the perfume of the female squad members. After all, the 4th Division was far from the frontlines, had a gentle philosophy, and boasted a very high proportion of female members.

Smelling the floral scent, Yato Uchiha was led by a low-ranking Seated Officer of the 4th Division to Unohana Retsu’s Captain’s office.

Although it was called the Captain’s office, due to her duties, it had been renovated into a cutting-edge surgical clinic. Serving dual purposes for both administration and medical treatment, it shared a similar concept with the 12th Division’s "Captain’s Laboratory."

The last time Yato Uchiha was severely injured by Hanzo Mochizuki’s Itto Kaso, it was here that he underwent surgery.

"It’s Yato-kun." Unohana Retsu was still smiling pleasantly. On her face, it seemed impossible to see any emotion other than compassion and gentleness.

I’d really love to see what you look like in the heat of slaughter... This bizarre thought flashed through Yato’s mind. After respectfully greeting her, he walked up to Unohana Retsu.

"It’s a good thing you’re here, Yato-kun." The beautiful female Soul Reaper rubbed her shoulder:

"With Seinosuke Yamada gone, there are many patients lining up waiting for treatment."

"Captain Unohana, I heard that Lieutenant Yamada went to the Shin’o Relief Squad?"

"Yes, someone headhunted him."

"A position higher than Lieutenant?"

"Mhm, he became the Director of the Shin’o Relief Squad directly."

Yato Uchiha let out an ’oh’ of understanding. Combining this with the plot of future generations, the one who extended an olive branch to Seinosuke Yamada was highly likely the Tsunayashiro family.

"Let’s get back to business, Yato-kun." Unohana Retsu rolled up the sleeve of her Shihakusho, revealing her pale arm, and extended it in front of the boy:

"Cast Kaido on me. Right now."

Yato nodded. Before placing his palm on her arm, he couldn’t help but remind her:

"Captain Unohana, you must have read my assessment records from the Shin’o Academy. My Kaido has massive side effects and causes intense pain."

"It’s fine. An old fogey like me is best at enduring pain."

"Then please excuse me, Captain Unohana."

A pale green light emitted from Yato’s palm, shining onto Unohana Retsu’s skin, penetrating deep into her bones, all the way to her soul.

"Nn..."

Unohana Retsu furrowed her elegant brows slightly and let out a low, muffled hum.

Recalling the way Harribel convulsed in agony, Yato knew his Kaido definitely had some issues. He hurriedly retracted his arm, terrified that Unohana Retsu would instinctively draw her blade and hack him to pieces in a stress response.

To his surprise, the gentle and soft-spoken Captain of the 4th Division merely tilted her head and glared at him with a hint of slight anger, as if questioning why he had stopped so abruptly.

Wait, sis... Why do you look like you were kind of enjoying that?

Does this fucking count as the thrill of slaughter too?

Yato muttered internally. He had always been a bit terrified of Unohana Retsu, feeling that this woman was practically borderline psychotic and mentally unhinged. If she changed her name to Retsu Uchiha, there wouldn’t be any problem whatsoever.

"...Captain Unohana?"

"Let me think." The female Soul Reaper suppressed her peculiar expression and smoothed out the wrinkles of her Shihakusho. After pondering for a moment, she shook her head:

"It is indeed as your file states. Your Kaido scorches the soul, causing intense pain."

"Scorches?"

"That’s right, scorches." Unohana Retsu carefully considered her words:

"You seem to be using Kaido as if it were an ordinary Kido, so you unconsciously weave in the power of the fire element."

"Isn’t Kaido just a type of Kido?"

"No. Strictly speaking, Kido only includes Hado and Bakudo. Kaido should be categorized separately. I actually suggested to the Shin’o Academy a long time ago that they change the definition in their textbooks, but alas..." A flash of gloom seemed to cross the female Soul Reaper’s gentle face:

"Kaido is not highly valued. From top to bottom, whether it is the official Soul Reapers of the Gotei 13 or the students at the Shin’o Academy, everyone focuses their attention on Hado and Bakudo. Even members of the 4th Division don’t have much interest in Kaido."

Wasn’t the original reason you learned Kaido just so you could hack at people to your heart’s content...? Yato curled his lips internally, but even if he were beaten to death, he wouldn’t dare voice his true thoughts. He could only nod continuously, showing his agreement with Unohana Retsu.

"Therefore, Yato-kun, if you want to work in the 4th Division, you have to learn true Kaido. At the very least, you cannot let the patients feel pain. With your innate talent, you will undoubtedly surpass the vast majority of Seated Officers very quickly."

"Yes, Lady Unohana. Yato will absolutely study with an open mind."

The beautiful Captain smiled gently, clearly very satisfied with his attitude:

"Good. To correct your Kaido, you must learn from the very beginning. The root of Kaido is healing the soul, so to start off, you need to understand every single organ in the body... Which part would you like to start learning from?"

Yato smiled lightly.

He didn’t even need to think before giving his answer—

"The eyes."
