Chapter 305: Chapter 305: The King Never Fell or Lost Game

"Adrian made sure she drank the same poison. Do you want to know why?" A cold smile lingered on his lips. "Because he’s infinitely smarter than you."

Owen’s face drained of color, his chest tightening as he took a step back. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Matteo’s smile only widened, turning sharper, more predatory. "What I’m saying, Owen, is that you failed."

Owen shook his head frantically, a bead of sweat sliding down his temple as his carefully constructed plan began to crumble before his eyes. "No... no. Are you trying to tell me Adrian is alive?"

Matteo tilted his head, his gaze unblinking. "What do you think?"

"That’s impossible!" Owen snapped, his voice cracking with a mixture of panic and denial.

Matteo let out a soft, humorless chuckle. Completely unbothered by the venom in Owen’s voice, he took a slow, deliberate step back before lowering himself onto the leather sofa. Crossing one leg over the other, he settled into the seat like a king upon his throne, looking at Owen’s unraveling expression with quiet amusement.

Owen began pacing the floor, his hands trembling as his mind raced. "There is absolutely no way he could have taken that poison and survived. Unless... unless that stupid girl betrayed me! That’s the only way Adrian could still be breathing or—"

"—Unless he never took the poison in the first place?" Matteo finished for him, his voice smooth and mocking.

Owen froze.

His chest rose and fell with heavy breaths as he stared at Matteo in disbelief. "How... how did that happen?"

The horrifying realization finally crashed over him.

His plan had failed.

Matteo’s calm confidence made it impossible to tell whether he was bluffing or telling the truth. But one thing was certain, if Adrian was still alive, then everything Owen had worked for had collapsed. And if Matteo had come here smiling instead of grieving, there would be no mercy waiting for him.

A surge of fear gripped his heart. His survival instincts took over, drowning out every coherent thought. He had only one chance.

Panic seized him. Owen’s hand shot inside his jacket, his trembling fingers reaching for the concealed pistol hidden beneath it.

He intended to shoot Matteo first.

BANG.

The deafening crack of a gunshot ripped through the room.

Owen hadn’t even managed to pull his pistol free before Matteo fired.

Matteo never flinched. He never rose from the sofa. With the calm precision of a seasoned marksman, he had drawn his pistol in one smooth, practiced motion and pulled the trigger.

The bullet struck Owen’s arm with pinpoint accuracy.

Owen let out a horrific, blood-curdling scream as the bullet tore through his arm. The force of the impact spun him sideways, sending his pistol clattering uselessly across the polished floor.

Clutching his shattered, bleeding arm against his chest, Owen crashed to his knees. Agonizing cries tore from his throat as he gasped for breath, lifting terrified eyes to Matteo, who remained seated exactly where he was, his expression as calm and emotionless as ever.

The brutal gunshot shattered whatever courage remained in the room.

The men and women Owen had invited to celebrate with him erupted into hysterical screams. Several immediately dropped to their knees, crying and begging for mercy.

"Please, Matteo! Don’t kill us!" one of the women sobbed. "We had nothing to do with this! Please... please spare us!"

Owen’s personal bodyguard was the first to break. He slowly raised both hands above his head, his entire body trembling.

"It was all Owen’s idea, Boss!" he shouted desperately. "He planned everything! We were following orders! Please... let us go!"

Owen hissed through clenched teeth, his face deathly pale from blood loss as he glared at the man.

"Shut up, you pathetic coward!" he snarled. "An hour ago, you were celebrating with me! You were the one calling this our ultimate victory!"

"Because you told us Adrian was already dead!" the bodyguard shot back, his fear overpowering every ounce of loyalty. "I didn’t know anything about poisoning him! I never agreed to murder!"

"Liar!" Owen roared.

"I’m telling the truth!" the bodyguard yelled back.

The two men descended into a furious argument, shouting over one another in a desperate attempt to save themselves.

Around them, Owen’s remaining guards stood frozen in place. No one dared reach for a weapon. No one dared move. With Matteo and his elite bodyguards surrounding the room, they knew the slightest wrong move would be their last.

Matteo watched the pathetic display unfold, his cold gaze shifting between the trembling bodyguard and Owen, who was clutching his bleeding arm in agony.

The desperate arguing amused him.

Without a word, Matteo casually lifted his pistol and squeezed the trigger.

BANG!

The bullet tore cleanly through the bodyguard’s forehead.

His desperate words died on his lips as his body went limp, collapsing to the floor with a dull thud. He was dead before he hit the ground.

"Since all of you are going to die tonight anyway," Matteo said, his voice calm, almost conversational as the echo of the gunshot faded, "there’s really no point arguing about who’s more to blame."

The remaining armed men recoiled in horror, while the men and women Owen had brought to celebrate with him erupted into fresh sobs. The women buried their faces in their hands, crying uncontrollably, while the men dropped to their knees, trembling as they stared at the lifeless body sprawled across the rug.

But Matteo had no interest in collateral damage. He was a tyrant, but he wasn’t a senseless butcher.

He raised a hand, signaling his men. "Take Owen’s guests out of here. Let them go. They mean nothing to me."

Matteo’s security detail moved swiftly, escorting the sobbing men and women out of the mansion. Within moments, only Owen, his remaining armed men, and the corpse of his dead bodyguard were left in the blood-stained living room.

Matteo leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he stared at the bleeding man.

"You know, Owen..." he said quietly. "You are truly a pathetic piece of work."

Owen gasped for air, sweat dripping from his chin as Matteo continued.

"I personally called you to apologize for what Adrian said to you, didn’t I? Yet you still went behind my back and poisoned my boyfriend, all because he stood up for his friend... your ex." Matteo let out a quiet scoff and slowly shook his head. "You let your fragile ego destroy everything."

A dark smirk curled at the corner of his lips.

"The funny thing is, your little plan was doomed from the very beginning. The moment you met Bella and handed her that vial of poison, you had already walked straight into my trap."

Owen’s eyes widened. His teeth chattered uncontrollably.

"W-What...?"

Matteo rose slowly from the sofa, his towering frame casting a shadow over Owen. The suffocating weight of his presence filled the room as he took one unhurried step after another toward the kneeling man.

"The only reason Adrian decided to play along with your pathetic little game was because of the mercenaries you hired," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "You didn’t just rely on Bella. You hired an execution squad as a backup in case she failed to poison Adrian, didn’t you?"

He stopped directly in front of Owen, looking down at him with cold contempt. "You wanted to make absolutely certain Adrian would be declared dead... one way or another."

Matteo’s cold smile deepened.

"The moment word reached my desk that someone wanted my boyfriend dead, I asked for a name. Yours was the one that came back."

He took another slow step closer, never taking his eyes off Owen.

"My business trip had already been finalized, and Adrian refused to let me cancel the merger because he knew how much it meant to me. So, he came up with a better idea." A hint of pride flickered across Matteo’s face. "He decided to play your game... and flush you out completely."

Matteo stopped just inches away from Owen, looking down at him as though he were nothing more than an insect.

"The poison you handed to Bella?" He let out a quiet, mocking chuckle. "It was intercepted and replaced the very same day she smuggled it into my estate."

His expression turned icy.

"Selene had already warned me that Bella was the only maid who harbored a bitter grudge against Adrian. From that moment on, I had my personal security team monitor her every move, listen to every phone call she made, and keep every maid in that house under constant surveillance."

Matteo’s smile widened. "You never stood a chance, Owen."

Owen swallowed hard, his voice trembling through the agonizing pain in his shattered arm. "Then... how was he declared dead? The hospital... the doctors... it was official!"

Matteo let out a low, humorless laugh.

"If you have enough money to hire an execution squad to murder my boyfriend, what makes you think I don’t have enough power to make the entire world believe he died?" He smiled coldly. "Compared to mine, your money and influence are nothing. I can make people see exactly what I want them to see. You, Owen... are insignificant."

Matteo leaned in closer...
