Chapter 304: Chapter 304: How Sure Are You?
"I’m ready. I’m ready to be the father you always deserved. Please, don’t leave me like this. Don’t leave without knowing how much I love you... I only stayed away because I thought it would protect your peace. I thought my presence would only bring you pain."
He pressed his trembling lips against Adrian’s cold knuckles, weeping openly.
"Don’t leave without knowing that I worried about you every single day. I was just too proud... too broken to show it. I called Maya every single day just to ask how you were doing, to know if you were eating, if you were happy... but I never had the courage to call you myself because I didn’t think I deserved to hear you call me ’Father.’ Please, Adrian... wake up. We still have so much to talk about, son."
His grief suddenly gave way to agonizing confusion. He slowly lifted his head to look at Adrian’s peaceful face, horror filling his tear-filled eyes.
"How did this happen?" he whispered, his voice trembling. "Who... who did this to you?"
A bitter wave of realization washed over him. He had always known the risks. The fear had kept him awake countless nights, hidden behind a mask of cold indifference.
"I never wanted you with Matteo," his father whispered, his voice trembling with sorrow and anger. "Not because I hated that you loved a man... but because I knew how dangerous Matteo’s world was. I was terrified for you. But Maya... Maya promised me he would protect you. She told me he would keep you safe, so I stepped back. I let you stay with the man you chose. So how did this happen? Why did this happen so suddenly? Why would anyone want to hurt you?"
He collapsed over the bed once more, his tears soaking the white sheets covering his son. Years of hidden love, silent worry, and unbearable regret finally broke free, leaving behind nothing but a heartbreaking apology spoken into the stillness of the room.
"I’m so sorry, Adrian... It shouldn’t have been you," he sobbed, his heart shattering with every word. "Please... come back to me. We still have so much to talk about. I won’t stand in the way of your happiness anymore. I accept the man you love... I accept everything. Just don’t die. Please, Adrian... don’t die."
While the hospital room overflowed with profound grief, the atmosphere in Owen’s estate was the exact opposite. The moment the confirmation of Adrian’s death reached him, Owen broke into a manic, triumphant laugh. He rejoiced openly, poured himself a glass of expensive whiskey, and toasted to the absolute ruin of Matteo Marcone.
Back at the Marcone estate, the mood was utterly devastating. When the lead bodyguard called the house to break the tragic news, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the servants. Honest tears were shed, and hearts were broken for Adrian.
In the center of the main hall, Bella and Selene remained under armed guard, the intense interrogation ongoing. Visually, Bella was putting on an act of trembling fear, but internally, she was practically singing.
She was thrilled with how cleanly she had executed the hit, and she felt entirely confident. In her mind, she had already successfully pinned the crime on Selene. The head chef didn’t stand a chance against her carefully constructed lies.
By 5:00 AM, the initial storm of weeping had drained everyone in the hospital waiting room. Eyes were bloodshot, and exhaustion had settled deep into their bones.
Mark stepped forward, his expression hardened with authority, and delivered a quiet but firm command to the guards: Adrian’s body was to be taken back to Matteo’s estate. Matteo would be arriving in a matter of hours, and he needed to find Adrian at home.
Maya opened her mouth to protest, wondering why they were taking Adrian from the hospital so soon, but she simply didn’t have the emotional or physical strength to argue.
Adrian’s father, still hollowed out by grief, didn’t stop the guards either. Deep down, he knew that despite all his regrets, Adrian belonged with Matteo now. That was the home Adrian had chosen. He would have wanted to be there, with the man he loved, even in death.
The guards quietly finalized the necessary paperwork with the hospital staff. Adrian was carefully transferred into the car and taken back to the estate.
Mark and Charles followed closely behind. At Mark’s insistence, Frank returned to his own residence, with instructions to come to Matteo’s estate later. Mark also asked Maya and her husband to head home, promising to let them know when Matteo arrived. Adrian’s father quietly left as well, choosing to grieve in private.
Once they arrived at the estate, Matteo’s most trusted personal physician was already waiting in the master bedroom.
The guards gently carried Adrian inside and laid him on the grand bed. Without wasting a second, the doctor stepped forward and immediately began his own thorough examination.
Once the guards left the room, the doctor locked the door behind him.
Mark gave strict orders that no one was to approach the master bedroom. The only people allowed near it were the doctor inside and the bodyguards standing outside the door.
Meanwhile, Mark and Charles remained downstairs in the living room, the mansion engulfed in a heavy, oppressive silence as they waited for Matteo to return.
Time crawled by in agonizing silence.
Seven o’clock passed.
Then nine.
By noon, the deep roar of approaching engines echoed through the estate, announcing Matteo’s arrival.
He didn’t stop to greet Mark or Charles. He didn’t ask a single question, nor did he spare a glance for the guards gathered in the foyer. His face was an unreadable mask of absolute calm.
Without breaking his stride, Matteo headed straight upstairs.
The bodyguards standing outside the master bedroom stepped aside immediately as he pushed open the door and walked in.
Inside, the doctor stood quietly by the window, waiting.
Matteo didn’t scream. He didn’t cry. He didn’t ask a single question.
Without a word, he walked to the bed, climbed onto the mattress, and gently gathered Adrian’s body into his arms, holding him in a tight, unyielding embrace.
The room fell silent.
The door closed behind him.
Matteo didn’t step outside again for the rest of the day.
It wasn’t until evening that the heavy bedroom doors finally clicked open.
Matteo stepped into the hallway, impeccably dressed in a sharp, dark long overcoat. The hollow emptiness that had filled his eyes earlier was gone. In its place was a cold, calculating focus that was infinitely more terrifying.
Mark immediately stepped into his path.
"Where are you going, Teo?"
Matteo met his friend’s gaze.
A slow, chilling smile curved his lips, utterly devoid of warmth.
"I’ll be back."
Back at Owen’s mansion, the atmosphere had transformed into a chaotic celebration.
Music blasted through the massive speakers, shaking the walls of the lavish living room. Believing he had finally won, Owen had filled the mansion with a crowd of male and female companions. Alcohol flowed freely as laughter echoed through the house. Even his bodyguards had let their guard down, drinking and celebrating alongside their boss.
Suddenly, the heavy front doors were thrown open with a violent crash.
Owen’s guards, who had been stationed outside the entrance, stumbled into the living room one after another after being forcefully shoved inside by Matteo’s men.
Before the guards inside the living room, or even Owen himself, could recover or reach for their weapons, Matteo’s elite bodyguards stormed through the doorway like an invading army, swiftly surrounding everyone in the room.
One of Matteo’s men strode straight to the sound system and violently ripped the cords from the speakers, plunging the mansion into a sudden, ringing silence.
Matteo stepped inside, his dark coat billowing slightly behind him. His men instantly fanned out, their firearms raised and pointed directly at every single person in the room. The partygoers shrieked, freezing in absolute terror.
Owen, however, just chuckled. He leaned back against his leather sofa, completely unfazed by the guns aimed at his chest, his eyes bright with a sick sense of accomplishment.
Matteo stepped into the center of the room, staring down at him. His voice was a deadly, low purr. "I warned you, Owen. Didn’t I warn you?"
Owen burst into a loud, mocking laugh. "Go ahead and shoot, Matteo! I don’t give a damn if I die tonight! Nothing can beat the sheer satisfaction of knowing that your own people betrayed you right under your nose. Your precious little boyfriend is dead, and he’s never, ever coming back. You lost!"
Matteo didn’t flinch. Instead, the dark, chilling smile returned to his face, his eyes locking onto Owen with absolute, terrifying certainty.
"How sure are you?" Matteo asked softly.
Owen stared back at him, the sudden, unnatural calmness in Matteo’s posture making the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. He looked closely at the man in front of him, realizing with a creeping sense of dread that Matteo didn’t look like someone who was truly grieving. There were no tears, no devastation, only a cold, calculated malice.
Owen’s confidence wavered, his brow furrowing as a knot formed in his stomach. "What... what do you mean by that?"
Matteo chuckled, a low, humorless sound that vibrated with danger.
"I mean you aren’t nearly as smart as you think you are, Owen. And neither is that little snake you planted in my house. The exact moment she served Adrian the poisoned meal, Adrian made sure she drank the same poison. Do you want to know why?" A cold smile lingered on his lips. "Because he’s infinitely smarter than you."
Owen’s face drained of color, his chest tightening as he took a step back.
"What the hell are you talking about?"
