Chapter 300: Chapter 300: I Don’t Want a Perfect Adrian

He stopped scrolling through his phone, slipped it onto the bedside table, and looked over at Adrian.

"Babe, can you grab my laptop from the desk?"

Normally, Adrian would have groaned dramatically, demanded a kiss as payment, or cheekily told Matteo to get it himself.

Instead, Adrian climbed out of bed without a word. He walked to the desk, picked up the laptop, and returned with a soft, obedient smile.

"Here you go."

Matteo accepted it, his brows knitting together.

"Could you get me a glass of water too?"

"Of course," Adrian replied without the slightest hesitation.

He quietly left the bedroom to fetch it.

Over the next hour, Matteo deliberately sent Adrian on three more small, unnecessary errands. Every single time, Adrian went without a sigh, a murmur of protest, or a single complaint.

The quiet, effortless compliance unsettled Matteo more than he cared to admit.

The following afternoon, one of the maids was dusting the console tables in a quiet corridor of the estate when the phone inside her apron suddenly vibrated.

She glanced at the screen.

A blocked number.

Her heart lurched.

Looking around to make sure no one was nearby, she hurried into an empty pantry before answering in a trembling whisper.

"Hello?"

"I have a simple job for you," a smooth, venomous voice came through the receiver.

The voice calmly explained exactly what he wanted her to do.

"Slip something into Adrian’s evening meal without anyone noticing. If you agree, I’ll send you what to put in it. It won’t kill him," the voice said. "It’ll only make him sick enough to end up in the hospital."

The maid’s eyes widened in horror.

"No," she whispered, shaking her head. "No... I can’t do that."

"I’ll pay you more money than you’ll earn in ten years working for Matteo," the man replied. "Name your price."

"I don’t care about the money!" she shot back, her voice trembling as tears gathered in her eyes.

Matteo’s icy warning from the emergency meeting echoed in her mind.

If even a single hair on his head is harmed... every one of you will answer to me.

Fear gripped her chest.

"Don’t ever call this number again," she whispered urgently. "If my boss finds out you contacted me, he’ll kill me. Stay away from me... and stay away from this estate."

Without waiting for a response, she ended the call, her hands shaking so badly she nearly dropped the phone. She leaned against the pantry wall, she struggled to steady her breathing, terrified of the dangerous game the man was trying to play.

The day before Matteo’s rescheduled business trip, the heavy silence between him and Adrian finally reached its limit.

They were sitting together on the plush sofa in the living room. Matteo set his coffee cup down, turned toward Adrian, and gently took both of his hands, his thumbs absentmindedly stroking over Adrian’s knuckles.

"Rian... we need to talk," Matteo said softly, his dark eyes searching Adrian’s face.

Adrian blinked and offered him a gentle smile. "About what, baby?"

Matteo let out a quiet sigh. "About you."

Adrian tilted his head slightly.

"Me?"

Matteo nodded.

"I’ve noticed how different you’ve been lately." His voice was calm but filled with concern. "I understand wanting to be kinder to the staff, and I love that part of you. But you’ve changed with me too."

Adrian frowned in confusion. "What do you mean?"

He gave Adrian’s hands a gentle squeeze. "You don’t argue with me anymore. You don’t complain or tease me. You don’t even try to bargain with me like you always used to. You don’t call me annoying anymore... You don’t demand kisses before doing something for me... You don’t even act like my spoiled baby anymore."

His voice grew quieter.

"Did I do something wrong?"

He searched Adrian’s eyes.

"Or... don’t you feel comfortable with me anymore?"

He hesitated for a moment before quietly asking, "Babe... where did my spoiled brat go?"

"No! That’s not it at all!" Adrian answered quickly, his fingers instantly tightening around Matteo’s. He looked desperate to reassure him.

"I’m more comfortable with you than anyone else, Matteo. You’re the only person I can be myself around. It’s just..." He lowered his head, his voice falling to a vulnerable whisper. "I thought... if I became more manly... more mature... if I stopped acting like a child and learned to be perfect... then maybe I wouldn’t be a liability to you."

He swallowed hard before continuing. "Maybe if I’m strong and perfect, nobody will want to hurt me... and they won’t be able to use me to get to you."

Matteo’s heart clenched. The truth hit him like a crushing blow. Adrian hadn’t changed because he wanted to. He had changed because he was terrified.

The nightmare had scarred him so deeply that he was trying to erase the very parts of himself that made him... him.

He believed that if he became stronger, quieter, and more "perfect," he would no longer be a burden, and no one would ever see him as Matteo’s weakness again.

The realization shattered Matteo’s heart.

He reached up, gently cupping Adrian’s face and tilting his chin until their eyes met.

"Adrian, listen to me," Matteo said, his voice gentle but unwavering. "I can protect you from the whole world, but I can’t protect you if you keep trying to erase yourself."

He brushed his thumb across Adrian’s cheek. "You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to become someone else just because you’re scared."

His expression softened with heartbreak. "And to be completely honest..." he whispered, "I don’t like seeing you like this."

Adrian’s lips parted. "You... you don’t?"

Matteo slowly shook his head. "No."

He rested his forehead against Adrian’s. "I fell in love with the man who argues with me, demands kisses before doing me a favor, pouts when he doesn’t get his way, and drives me crazy every single day."

A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

"I fell in love with my spoiled brat, my little menace, my stubborn baby."

His smile faded into something earnest. "Not because you’re childish, but because you’re alive. You’re happy. You’re unapologetically yourself."

He gently squeezed Adrian’s hands. "I don’t want a perfect Adrian. I want my Adrian. The one who laughs too loudly, complains too much, and makes this house feel like a home. So stop trying to become someone you think I need."

Matteo smiled warmly. "Because the man I need has been sitting right in front of me all along."

He brushed his thumb across Adrian’s cheek, his smile growing even softer.

Matteo chuckled. "I love it when you whine. I love it when you make me kiss you ten times just to get you to hand me the TV remote. I love pampering you, chasing after you, and sweet-talking you into doing the simplest things."

He leaned a little closer.

"That’s my Adrian."

His voice turned gentle.

"I don’t want some perfect, quiet soldier who never complains. I want the brat who drives me crazy every single day because he knows I’ll never stop loving him."

Adrian stared at him.

Slowly, the weight he’d been carrying lifted from his shoulders. The fear of having to be "perfect" melted away, replaced by warmth and relief.

A genuine smile spread across his face. "So..." Adrian asked, a playful grin tugging at his lips, "you actually like it when I whine and give you a hard time?"

Matteo laughed, resting his forehead against Adrian’s. "More than you’ll ever know."

He gently pinched Adrian’s cheek.

"You can be polite and mature with everyone else if that’s what you want. But with me..." He smiled lovingly. "Don’t you ever change. Understand?"

Adrian’s smile widened. Throwing his arms around Matteo’s neck, he hugged him tightly before letting out a soft, spoiled giggle.

"Okay, Daddy."

When night fell, the heavy tension that had hung over the estate for days finally dissipated. Matteo and Adrian retreated to their bedroom, falling asleep peacefully in each other’s arms, tangled together in a warm, comforting cuddle.

Meanwhile, back at Owen’s mansion...
