Chapter 297: Chapter 297: The Dream That Stole My Breath

"It smells so good..." he mumbled. "Did you really make it?"

Matteo smiled proudly. "Why don’t you come and see for yourself?"

Adrian finally rolled over. The moment their eyes met, a sleepy smile spread across his face. Without a word, he scooted across the bed and practically melted into Matteo’s arms, wrapping himself around him like a sleepy koala.

"Good morning, Daddy," he mumbled against Matteo’s chest, rubbing his cheek against the soft fabric of his shirt. "My head hurts..."

Matteo’s heart softened.

He slipped an arm around Adrian’s waist and gently ran his fingers through his messy morning hair.

"I know, baby," he said softly. "I’m sorry. Sit up for me. I made you some hangover tea and breakfast. It’ll help you feel better."

Adrian let out a dramatic sigh but obediently pushed himself upright. Before Matteo could reach for the tray, Adrian leaned over and planted a lingering kiss on his cheek.

"Thank you, Daddy."

Matteo smiled, giving Adrian’s waist a gentle squeeze. As Adrian leaned in a little closer, Matteo suddenly paused.

He wrinkled his nose. "Hmm..."

Adrian blinked. "What?"

Matteo tried not to laugh. "Your breath smells like a bottle of gin."

Adrian gasped dramatically, placing a hand over his chest as though he’d been deeply offended.

"Excuse me?"

Before Matteo could react, Adrian grabbed the front of his shirt and leaned in even closer.

"Smell it properly."

He puffed a long breath straight into Matteo’s face.

Matteo burst into laughter, turning his head away.

"Baby!" he laughed. "Stop!"

Adrian only giggled, chasing after him with another exaggerated puff of breath.

Matteo leaned back, still laughing as he tried to escape.

"No! Absolutely not!"

Adrian pouted immediately. "Kiss me."

Matteo looked at him with an amused smile.

"Not until you brush your teeth."

Adrian’s mouth fell open in disbelief.

"Daddy!"

Matteo couldn’t hold back his laughter.

"Go brush your teeth first," he teased, gently pinching Adrian’s cheek. "Then I’ll give you as many kisses as you want."

Adrian immediately pouted. "I knew it," he huffed dramatically. "You’re so unromantic."

Before Matteo could react, Adrian reached up, cupped his face with both hands, and tried to pull him in.

"Kiss me right now!"

Matteo laughed as he leaned back just out of reach.

"No, baby. Your breath really smells like gin."

Adrian’s eyes widened in mock disbelief.

"Are you saying I have bad breath?"

Matteo grinned shamelessly.

"Yes."

Adrian gasped dramatically.

"Wow... you actually said it to my face."

Matteo burst into laughter.

Adrian narrowed his eyes. "You’re dead."

With a sudden burst of playful energy, he threw himself onto Matteo, climbing straight onto his lap before pinning him against the mattress. Without warning, he dug his fingers into Matteo’s sides, tickling him relentlessly.

Matteo immediately broke into deep, uncontrollable laughter.

"Baby!" he laughed, squirming beneath him. "Stop! Alright... stop!"

Adrian only laughed harder, refusing to show him any mercy.

"Apologize first!"

"I’m sorry!" Matteo laughed breathlessly. "Your breath smells wonderful!"

Adrian paused.

"...Liar."

They both burst into laughter.

Taking advantage of Adrian’s distraction, Matteo quickly caught both of his wrists. With one smooth movement, he rolled them over until Adrian was lying beneath him.

Adrian looked up at him, still giggling, his cheeks flushed a soft pink.

Matteo smiled down at him with so much affection that it made Adrian’s heart skip a beat.

"Got you," he whispered.

Without another word, he leaned down and kissed him.

It was slow. Gentle. Unhurried.

He didn’t care about the lingering taste of gin anymore.

He only wanted to kiss the man he loved.

When they finally pulled apart, Adrian smiled smugly.

"I thought my breath smelled terrible."

Matteo chuckled, brushing a loose strand of hair away from Adrian’s forehead before pressing a soft kiss to the tip of his nose.

"It does," he admitted with a grin. "But I love you more than I hate the smell."

Adrian laughed, wrapping both arms around Matteo’s neck.

"Alright, then carry me to the bathroom so I can freshen up." He smiled mischievously. "Breakfast smells amazing. Looks like my boyfriend isn’t just good in bed anymore... he’s getting pretty good in the kitchen too."

Matteo smiled, his eyes filled with quiet affection.

"Anything for you, baby."

He slipped one arm beneath Adrian’s knees and the other around his back before lifting him effortlessly into his arms.

Adrian immediately snuggled closer, resting his head against Matteo’s shoulder with a content little smile as Matteo carried him toward the bathroom.

Once inside, Adrian glanced at the spacious walk-in shower before looking back at Matteo. A playful smile slowly spread across his face.

"You’re already here," he said mischievously. "Might as well shower with me."

Before Matteo could respond, Adrian reached over and turned on the shower. Warm water cascaded from above, and with a grin, he caught Matteo’s hand and pulled him beneath the spray.

The bathroom quickly filled with steam as they laughed and played beneath the warm water. Adrian lathered sweet-smelling soap over Matteo’s broad chest and back, smiling to himself as Matteo stood there, letting him fuss over him. Every now and then, they stole slow, lingering kisses beneath the shower, completely losing themselves in the quiet comfort of the peaceful morning.

After showering together and brushing their teeth, they dried themselves with soft towels before changing into matching silk robes.

Matteo gently led Adrian back into the bedroom, where the breakfast he had prepared was still waiting on the bedside table, its delicious aroma filling the room.

Adrian sat down with an eager smile and reached for his fork.

Just as he was about to take his first bite, the sharp buzz of Matteo’s phone broke the quiet.

Matteo glanced at the screen and immediately recognized the caller.

Leaning down, he pressed a gentle kiss to the top of Adrian’s head.

"Eat first, baby," he said softly. "I need to take this."

Adrian nodded, already cutting into his breakfast.

"Okay, Daddy."

While Adrian happily enjoyed the meal, Matteo walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and answered the call. It was the high-profile business meeting he had been expecting. The conversation was brief but important. A major international union required his personal presence, meaning he would have to leave the country in two days.

After ending the call, Matteo slipped his phone back into his pocket and turned toward the bed. He paused for a moment, quietly watching Adrian eat with a look of unmistakable affection.

Feeling Matteo’s gaze on him, Adrian looked up and smiled.

"Don’t just stand there," he said, patting the empty space beside him. "Come and eat with me."

A soft smile spread across Matteo’s face. He climbed onto the bed beside Adrian, and together they enjoyed the breakfast, occasionally feeding each other bites between quiet laughter and affectionate smiles.

Once they had finished eating and set the empty plates aside, they settled comfortably against the pillows, wrapped in each other’s embrace. Matteo absentmindedly traced slow circles over Adrian’s shoulder, his expression gradually growing more thoughtful.

"Baby..." he murmured softly.

Adrian hummed, tilting his head to look up at him.

"I have to leave for a business trip in two days," Matteo murmured.

Adrian’s smile faded slightly. "How long will you be gone?"

"Three days," Matteo replied.

Adrian let out a quiet sigh before snuggling closer, resting his cheek against Matteo’s chest.

"Three whole days..." he mumbled. "I’m really going to miss you."

Matteo tightened his arms around him and gently kissed the top of his head.

"I’m going to miss you even more," he whispered. "If I had a choice, I wouldn’t leave you at all."

Adrian smiled softly at his words, wrapping his arms a little tighter around Matteo’s waist.

"Then you have to come back to me as quickly as you can."

Matteo smiled. "I promise."

Wanting to make the most of the little time they had left together, they spent the rest of the day wrapped in each other’s company, shutting out the rest of the world and refusing to let go.

The following day, reality caught up with them. Matteo returned to his usual routine at the office, while Adrian stayed home, checking in with his art studio and overseeing matters at his gallery.

By evening, Matteo was back at the estate, and they slipped effortlessly into their familiar routine, sharing a quiet dinner, teasing each other over the smallest things, and eventually falling asleep wrapped in each other’s arms.

But on the night before Matteo was due to leave for his business trip, the peaceful silence of the bedroom was suddenly shattered.

Still fast asleep, Adrian found himself trapped inside a terrifying nightmare.

In the dream, he stood alone in a pitch-black room with no doors and no windows. The freezing air pressed heavily against his skin, while an eerie silence swallowed everything around him.

In the middle of the room stood a single table, neatly set with a plate of food.

An overwhelming hunger twisted inside him.

Almost as though he had no control over his own body, Adrian walked toward the table, picked up the food, and began to eat.

The moment he swallowed...

Agonizing pain shot through his throat.

The food became lodged in his windpipe.

Adrian’s eyes flew open in panic.

He clutched frantically at his throat, gasping for air, but nothing reached his lungs. His breathing stopped completely.

Desperately, he tried to call out for Matteo.

He tried to scream.

He tried to beg for help.

But no sound came out.

Only a faint, choking rattle escaped his lips as darkness slowly closed in around him.

His knees gave out beneath him, and he collapsed onto the freezing floor. He thrashed desperately, clawing at his throat as panic consumed him. Time seemed to lose all meaning. He was completely alone, suffocating in the endless darkness, and with every passing second, the horrifying realization settled deeper into his mind.

No one was coming to save him.

The darkness closed in from every direction, crushing the last bit of air from his lungs until everything around him faded into complete blackness.

"Matteo!"

Adrian screamed, bolting upright in bed.

He gasped desperately for air, his chest rising and falling in frantic, uneven breaths. His entire body trembled violently, drenched in cold sweat as tears streamed uncontrollably down his face. His heart pounded so hard it felt as though it would burst from his chest.

Matteo jolted awake the instant he heard Adrian’s terrified scream.

"Baby!"

Without a second thought, he threw the duvet aside and pulled Adrian tightly into his arms, holding him against his chest as though he could shield him from the nightmare itself.

"I’ve got you," Matteo said urgently, one hand cradling the back of Adrian’s head while the other rubbed soothing circles over his trembling back. "I’ve got you, baby. Breathe... slowly. I’m right here."

He gently cupped Adrian’s face...
