Chapter 265: Chapter 265: The Bond That Never Breaks
Adrian thanked her before leaving the dressing room and making his way through the corridors toward the bridal suite, where Maya was getting ready for the ceremony.
The moment he stepped inside, the stylists were putting the finishing touches on Maya’s veil.
Adrian stopped in his tracks.
His eyes widened, and for a long moment, he simply stared.
Dressed in the wedding gown she had always dreamed of wearing, Maya looked absolutely breathtaking. She was elegant, radiant, and every bit the beautiful bride she had imagined becoming.
"Wow..." Adrian breathed, completely forgetting every word he had planned to say.
Maya caught his reflection in the mirror.
A smile immediately spread across her face.
She turned toward the styling team.
"Could you give us a few minutes, please?" she asked warmly.
The stylists smiled knowingly before quietly leaving the room, closing the door behind them.
Once they were alone, Maya looked back at her brother and held out both hands.
"Come here," she said softly, her smile growing even warmer.
Adrian couldn’t tear his eyes away from her. Tears of happiness shimmered in his eyes as he slowly walked over, his heart swelling with pride.
"You look so beautiful, sis," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Absolutely beautiful."
Maya’s smile softened.
"Thank you, little one," she replied gently.
Unable to hold back any longer, Adrian stepped forward and wrapped his arms around her, taking extra care not to wrinkle the delicate fabric of her gown.
"Congratulations, Maya," he whispered, his voice trembling. "I’m so... so happy for you."
Maya hugged him back just as tightly, careful not to disturb her veil.
"Thank you, Adrian," she murmured. "Having you here means more to me than you know."
When they finally pulled apart, Maya noticed a lone tear slipping down Adrian’s cheek. Smiling gently, she reached up and brushed it away with her thumb.
"Hey," she said softly. "No tears, okay? Today is a happy day."
She smiled reassuringly. "I’m going to be happy with him... just like you’re going to be happy with Matteo."
Adrian let out a quiet sniffle before smiling through his tears.
"I know. I’m just... really happy for you."
Maya smiled before taking both of his hands in hers.
"Come, sit with me for a minute," she said gently, leading him over to the nearby sofa.
Maya carefully gathered the layers of her gown before lowering herself onto the sofa. She smoothed the skirt over her knees, making sure the delicate fabric and long train fell neatly around her.
Adrian took the seat beside her, turning slightly so he could give her his full attention.
Once they were both settled, Maya’s smile slowly faded, her expression becoming more serious.
"There are a few things I need to tell you before the ceremony starts."
Adrian nodded. "I’m listening."
Maya took a slow breath.
"First," she said quietly. "Dad will be here today with his new family. If you see him, greet him. He’s still your father, and that’s all you owe him. Nothing more."
She squeezed Adrian’s hands gently.
"If he walks past you without saying a word... I don’t want you to let it get to you. Don’t waste your energy thinking about it, and don’t let it ruin today for you. Today is about celebrating, not reopening old wounds. Promise me you’ll ignore him."
Adrian held her gaze for a moment before giving a small nod.
"I promise."
"Secondly," Maya continued, her eyes searching his face, "I want you to remember that every relationship takes patience, understanding, and compromise from both people."
She smiled gently.
"I’m not saying you shouldn’t speak up when you’re hurt or when something is bothering you. You absolutely should. But not every disagreement has to become a battle over who’s right or who’s in control."
"Matteo loves you deeply. Learn to respect him as the man who takes the lead in your relationship. Just as I respect my future husband, I want you to respect Matteo for the role he carries in your life. It doesn’t make you any less of a man, it simply means honoring the person you love."
Adrian smiled faintly, trying to deflect the heavy tone. "What exactly do you mean by that?"
Maya raised an eyebrow, a knowing, playful glint entering her eyes. "Oh, you know exactly what I mean."
Adrian blinked, playing entirely innocent.
"I really don’t."
Maya smirked, leaning in slightly. She didn’t want to ask directly, but she wanted to know if her stubborn little brother was truly being taken care of behind closed doors.
"Is he good at it?" she began with a teasing smile. "Does he take care of you the way you like?"
Adrian’s cheeks immediately turned bright pink. He tried to keep his innocent expression, pretending not to understand what she was hinting at.
"Yes," he answered quickly. "He’s really good to me. We talked about everything, and we’re completely okay now."
Maya laughed softly, instantly seeing through his attempt to dodge the question.
"Rian," she said with an amused smile, "I’m not talking about your conversation."
Adrian’s eyes widened.
Maya couldn’t help teasing him a little more.
"I mean, does Matteo treat you well in every way? Does he make you happy? Does he take good care of you? Do you enjoy him? Does he satisfy you and handle you well?"
"Yes!" Adrian rushed out, his face burning hot as he tried to redirect the conversation. "I wasn’t feeling well earlier and he literally took me straight to the hospital. He’s a really good man, Maya."
Maya chuckled, shaking her head.
"Adrian," she said, her voice full of affectionate joy, "you’re adorable when you’re embarrassed."
"I don’t know what you’re talking about! Please, please stop!" Adrian protested, laughing as he quickly covered his ears with both hands to block out his sister’s teasing.
Maya smiled warmly, her expression softening with sisterly affection. Reaching forward, she gently pulled his hands away from his ears.
"Alright, alright. I’ll stop teasing you," she said with a small laugh. "But seriously, since you love him and clearly enjoy being with him, I want you to think about those parts of him whenever the two of you have a disagreement. Don’t let one painful moment make you forget all the good ones."
She squeezed his hands gently.
"And please... don’t ever make another rash decision to pack your bags and walk away without talking things through first. Promise me."
Adrian nodded without hesitation, his eyes filled with sincerity.
"I promise, sis. Never again. I won’t leave him again. I love him so much... and honestly, he’s all I have... cause I’m all by myself now.."
Maya’s expression immediately softened into a gentle frown. She reached up and lightly tapped the tip of his nose.
"Hey," she said softly. "Don’t ever say that. I’m still here, alive and well. No matter what happens, you can come to me anytime, any day, and I’ll always be here for you."
She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze.
"You also have your friends, and you have one of the most devoted men in the world by your side. You’re surrounded by people who love you, Rian. So don’t ever think you’re alone."
She gently brushed a stray strand of hair away from his forehead.
"Now, stop worrying, relax, and enjoy today, okay?"
Adrian nodded, his heart overflowing with warmth. "Alright, sis."
They hugged again, the unbreakable bond between them filling the room with warmth. For the next few minutes, they talked, laughed, and reminisced, the earlier nervousness gradually giving way to genuine happiness.
Then...
The bridal suite door slowly opened.
The warmth in the room vanished in an instant.
Adrian and Maya turned toward the entrance at the same time.
Their father stepped inside, and the atmosphere turned ice-cold.
Both siblings rose to their feet.
Maya instinctively smoothed the front of her gown before lifting her chin, her posture becoming calm and composed.
"Father," she greeted quietly. "You’re here."
Their father glanced at the time on his gold watch, his expression as stern and unreadable as ever.
"Have you seen the time?" he asked. "The guests are already seated, and everyone is waiting. I was asked to come and escort you downstairs. We need to leave now."
Adrian swallowed the lump forming in his throat. For Maya’s sake, he forced himself to smile and stepped forward slightly.
"Good morning, Father."
Silence.
Not even a glance.
Their father walked straight past Adrian as though he hadn’t spoken at all, his attention fixed entirely on Maya.
A rare smile softened his otherwise stern features.
"I’m proud of you, my daughter, congratulations."
Adrian’s smile faltered for only a brief moment, but remembering the promise he had made to Maya just minutes earlier, he quietly swallowed the hurt and remained silent.
Determined not to let the dismissal define the moment, Adrian tried once more.
He stepped into his father’s line of sight.
"Good morning, Father."
This time, the older man looked at him.
His cold gaze traveled slowly over Adrian before he spoke.
"I know you’re happy for your sister. You should take notes today. It’s about time you found yourself a good girlfriend to bring home so we can finally settle you down properly too."
Adrian remained calm. "You’ve already met the person...
