Chapter 45: Ch85. Ties that bind
Kurt noticed two things when the stat burst hit him.
The first was that it wasn’t that the students were especially weak, no.
It was just that the level of the beasts in that first floor of the Nest was absurdly high. At least C+, something that a teenager awakened would never be able to overcome on their own.
The second was that the whole Nest around him gave off the same energy he felt in the [MEMORY FRAGMENT], when his other version first entered thew [HIDDEN NEST].
And it could mean one out of two things, but he didn’t give room to these possibilities, throwing them to the back of his mind, and focusing solely on the task at hand.
Which was slaughtering every single Diwerewolf that appeared in front of him.
When the two beasts appeared, Evellyn and Nikolai screamed, thinking that Kurt might not have noticed them in time, and that he would probably die.
But what happened after that took their breath away like jumping off of a cliff.

Kurt’s stats had gone through the roof after he diligently almost destroyed his body with the use of the [MEMORY FRAGMENT].
He knew that it could’ve been irreversibly dangerous, but from when he began working out, to the other times when he tested ideas about increasing his stats, Kurt ended up finding out that he was right.
And that the more he used and overused his body, the more his stats would increase and the stronger he would get.
’So I finally don’t need to depend on some inexplicable cheating to be on par with you all...’ He grinned at the beasts that had their claws inches away from Kurt’s limbs.
He exhaled slowly, as if the time around him didn’t matter at all, and in the blink of an eye, even faster than that, the heads of the two Diwerewolves fell to the ground.
Everything happened so fast that even Nikolai, who had the ability to move from one place to another in the speed of thought, couldn’t follow.

The grin on Kurt’s face got even bigger.
"Two more down, thirty more to go!"
The beasts weren’t all in a single place, but as Kurt realized, they were organized, so they weren’t just dumb animals.
They were trying to diverge Kurt’s attention so that they could swarm over the barrier and take everyone of them out in a single attack.
That much was clear enough for Kurt to see.
However, he felt that something was off. Like the Diwerewolves there didn’t want to just lure him away from the barrier.
"So you’re somehow smart, after all?"
Kurt sharpened his senses to the limits with the help of his newly increased [PERCEPTION] stat, and he suddenly realized his mistake.
He got too cocky and didn’t pay attention to the barrier closing, so one of the beasts took two of his classmates, taking them to opposite points of the scattered circle they made around the area.
Kurt sighed in frustration.
But how did they know about his quest?
Did they know that he needed all his colleagues alive in order to succeed?
They hadn’t killed none of the hostages until then, so...
’So I’ll have to take the shot and aim for luck this time.’
Kurt’s mind races like a Formula One car, and less than a second later, a plan had formed in his head.
He focused everything his skill [QUICK FINGERS] had in a single movement that, outside the [HIDDEN ROOM], out there in the real world, required months or even years of practice, and threw one of his daggers with all his strength and focus towards one of the Diwerewolves holding his classmate.
And with his newly acquired speed and reflexes, he turned around and ran towards the other beast.
He counted the steps on his mind, converting them into meters and centimeters.
And when there was just two meters between him and the other beast, he jumped:
’Ghost Move!’
His body suddenly disappeared from view, leaving just a faint, vanishing afterimage of him in front of the Diwerewolf, who looked at the afterimage, eyes wide and perplexed.
But it only lasted for less than a second, because Kurt suddenly appeared right behind the beast, already sheathing back his dagger.
Both beasts fell dead at the same time, one with Kurt’s dagger planted on its forehead, and the other, with its head falling over the bloody grass.

"Run towards the middle of the circle, I’ll cover you!" Kurt shouted to both students, starting the real slaughter.
Slash!
Spurt!
Clang!
The sounds of the fight were the only thing that broke the forest’s silence, and the counter on Kurt’s quest window only went up.

A few more heads tumbling over the grass.

Kurt disappeared in the shadows and reappeared right behind where the beasts were.

Seconds passed and the grass became more and more bloody.
[DIWEREWOLVES KILLED: 45/50]

[DIWEREWOLVES KILLED: 49/50]

And soon, there was only a single Diwerewolf remaining.
It was bigger than the others, but didn’t feel to Kurt that it was the leader.
However, it carried an axe, and had an eyepatch over its right eye.
Kurt inhaled and exhaled, looking straight at the enormous beast that stared back at him.
"Are we playing Serious right now?" Kurt scoffed.
And as if the beast could understand him, it let out an angry, deeply enraged howl, charging forward and raising its axe, ready to slice Kurt in half.
"Too bad you’re kinda slow..." Kurt rushed forward and arrived behind the beast before it could finish its attack.
The axe fell from its hand, and Kurt’s dagger appeared buried into the monster’s chest, piercing its heart.

Kurt sighed and sat on the grass, panting ever so slightly.
