Chapter 163: Chapter 166: Good Friends
"Bro, where are you going?"
Felix Preston had just reached the door and was about to open it when Lynn Preston suddenly twisted the knob from the outside, coming face-to-face with him.
His gaze was lowered, his usually gentle face now as cold as ice.
"I’m going to the studio." He sidestepped past Lynn Preston on his crutch, heading out without a backward glance.
"Huh?" Lynn Preston turned, watching his retreating figure in surprise. "Your leg hasn’t even healed yet, why are you going to the studio? Can’t you just solve it over the phone?"
"..." Felix Preston ignored her.
Even on his crutch, he moved with surprising speed, disappearing down the hallway in the blink of an eye.
"...Huh?" Lynn Preston was thoroughly confused, but she didn’t dwell on it.
She turned back, and as she walked in, her eyes fell on Sonia Quincy by the sofa. She saw that Sonia’s eyes were red, as if she were on the verge of tears.
"Sonia?!" Lynn’s heart clenched, and she practically sprinted over to Sonia Quincy.
"Sonia, what’s wrong?" she asked worriedly, grabbing Sonia Quincy’s shoulders. "Did you and my brother get into a fight? Or... does he not trust you? Is there some misunderstanding?"
Sonia Quincy shook her head, then raised a hand to wipe the corners of her moist eyes. "It’s neither of those."
"Neither... then what happened?" Lynn Preston reached out and wiped away a stray tear Sonia had missed, her own heart now in her throat.
But Sonia Quincy just shook her head again. "Don’t ask right now. Just go after your brother. He stormed out of here, and I’m worried something might happen to him."
"Okay." Lynn Preston agreed instantly, then turned and ran.
"Sonia, you just stay put! I promise I’ll make sure my brother is safe—"
SLAM!
Lynn Preston had already slammed the door shut before Sonia Quincy could reply.
"Ah..."
She hung her head and let out a heavy sigh. After standing there in a daze for a moment, she held her stomach and sank back onto the sofa, utterly crestfallen.
In truth, she had always known this day would come. The moment she told Felix Preston that first lie, she knew there would be a day when everything would erupt.
She had anticipated every one of Felix Preston’s reactions, yet she still felt lost and helpless...
"Bro!"
By the time Lynn Preston caught up to Felix Preston, he was already getting into a taxi at the entrance to their residential complex.
"Bro, where are you going? Are you just going to leave Sonia?" Lynn Preston leaned against the car window, her forehead beaded with sweat from anxiety.
Felix Preston’s face was a cold mask, his gaze fixed downward, looking at no one.
"I’m not leaving her. I really do have to go to the studio to take care of something. Hurry back and stay with her. Don’t leave her home alone. She still hasn’t eaten lunch."
Lynn Preston refused to budge. "I’ll go back if you come with me!"
"..." Too lazy to explain, Felix Preston simply took out his phone, pulled up the WeChat message Evan Yates had just sent, and showed it to Lynn Preston.
After just one glance, Lynn Preston automatically pulled her hand away from the open window.
"Oh... so you really do have something to do..."
Felix Preston put his phone away and grunted coldly. "Stop messing around and get back to your sister-in-law. She’ll overthink things if she’s alone. Comfort her for me."
"You..." Lynn Preston looked at him, exasperated. Her thoughts were a jumbled mess.
"Sonia was afraid something would happen to you, so she sent me to make sure you were safe. And you? One minute you’re worried she’s hungry, the next you’re scared she’ll start overthinking. You two obviously care about each other so much, so why do you have to fight like this? Can’t you just talk things through?"
Felix Preston: "...I didn’t fight with her. I could never bring myself to fight with her."
Lynn Preston put her hands on her hips, her face a mask of disbelief. "If you didn’t fight, then why did you rush out of the house? And why were Sonia’s eyes all red, like she’d been crying?"
"...Wiping her tears?" Those three words made Felix Preston panic. He finally lifted his head to look at Lynn Preston, and his eyes were clearly even redder than Sonia Quincy’s.
"Was she crying?"
Lynn Preston shook her head. "Not really crying, no, but she looked incredibly sad."
"..."
Felix Preston’s heart, which had leaped into his throat, settled back down.
"Go back and stay with her. Don’t let her be sad anymore."
Lynn Preston: "You’re really not coming back with me?"
Felix Preston clutched his phone. "This thing at the studio is urgent. I have to go now. Hurry back so your sister-in-law doesn’t have to wait."
"...Alright." Lynn Preston took two steps back, knowing she couldn’t change his mind.
"Just be safe, then. Text me when you get there."
Felix Preston grunted in acknowledgment, then rolled up the window, and the taxi quickly disappeared from Lynn Preston’s sight.
"Ah..."
Lynn Preston gazed down the road, let out a long sigh, and started walking back home.
BZZZT—
BZZZT—
Her phone suddenly vibrated twice, pulling Sonia Quincy from her tangled thoughts.
She picked up the phone she’d set aside, but didn’t see Felix Preston’s name among the notifications.
A wave of disappointment washed over her as she unlocked her phone and went straight to WeChat.
It was as if Mina Jennings and Julia Dawson had planned it; they were both bombarding her with messages at the same time.
Mina Jennings: ??? What’s going on? What’s the deal with that news story?
Mina Jennings: Bloom Preston, my friend, who did you piss off this time? How did you suddenly end up being framed for something so huge?
Julia Dawson: ??? Oh, my dear Mr. Quincy, are you OK? Do you need legal aid?
Julia Dawson: Mr. Quincy, let me post a TikTok to show my support. I’ve already got it all written out, take a look.
These two friends were incredibly loyal. Upon seeing the negative press about Sonia Quincy, their first reaction wasn’t suspicion or gossip, but an urgent desire to help her.
A faint smile finally touched Sonia Quincy’s lips as she read their messages.
She tapped open the chat window, but just as she was about to type a reply, her phone started ringing with an unknown number.
She hesitated, afraid to answer. She had already received two calls from strangers spewing insults, as well as an interview request from a tabloid reporter.
BZZZT—
Her phone buzzed again. It was a text from Hannah Sutton.
—Mr. Quincy, pick up. It’s me calling.
"..."
"Whew..." Sonia Quincy instantly breathed a sigh of relief.
She answered the call and put it on speaker.
"Hello...?"
"Mr. Quincy!!!"
"Bloom Preston!!"
Three different voices answered her at once.
"..."
Sonia Quincy paused, surprised. "Are all three of you together right now?"
"Yep!" the three women replied in unison.
Hannah Sutton: "Mr. Quincy, I’m serious, do you need legal aid? Just say the word, and I’ll have someone over there to help you right away!"
Julia Dawson yelled, "We’ll help you too! You’re our one and only Mr. Quincy, we can’t let those assholes drive you into a depression."
