Chapter 154: Chapter 157: Blinded by Jealousy
Cecilia Quincy had been very busy lately, and very frustrated.
Willow Quincy was seriously injured. At first, he was in a coma and wouldn’t wake up. When he finally did, he became strangely silent and withdrawn.
Cecilia had to look after him, manage her own studio, and find time to deal with her relationship with Ethan Lockwood. She was completely swamped, spread far too thin.
So, when she saw Sonia Quincy and Lynn Preston at the same private hospital, her first instinct was to treat them like they were invisible and walk right past.
But the sound of their laughter was too grating. Words symbolizing a happy, blissful life like "baby," "names," and "raising kids" frequently spilled from their lips.
Cecilia endured it for a moment, but the longer she listened, the more irritated she became. She changed direction and planted herself directly in front of Sonia Quincy and Lynn Preston.
Lynn Preston was the first to notice her. She immediately looked up and asked irritably, "What do you want?"
"Sonia Quincy." Cecilia ignored her, her gaze fixed on Sonia.
Sonia was still smiling at Felix Preston. "Hold on, I need to say something to someone."
Only after saying that did she look up, finally giving Cecilia a proper look. "Is there something you need?"
Cecilia looked down at her, a deep furrow in her brow. "Big Brother is awake. He’s in this hospital right now."
"...Oh." Sonia’s reaction was lukewarm, her eyes even showing a hint of impatience. "He actually woke up so soon? What a shame."
"Sonia Quincy!" Cecilia’s voice shot up, easily provoked by Sonia. "No matter what, Willow Quincy is your brother! Can’t you be less callous?"
"I can’t." Sonia tossed out the two words lightly.
"You—" Cecilia took two angry steps forward, but in the next second, she was forced back by Lynn Preston, who had suddenly stood up.
Lynn Preston blocked Sonia, using her height advantage to glare down at Cecilia as she questioned her in a cold voice, "What do you think you’re doing?"
Cecilia’s eyes widened as she glared fiercely back at Lynn, her lips pressed together in silence.
Lynn Preston eyed her up and down with hostility, then suddenly smirked. "Cecilia Quincy, who do you think you are? What gives you the right to order my sister-in-law around?"
"My sister-in-law cut ties with your Quincy Family ages ago. Willow Quincy is no longer her brother! You people are hilarious. You kick her out without a second thought, but now that you’re in trouble, you come trying to guilt-trip her with all this ’brother’ talk? You’re unbelievably thick-skinned."
"...What does this have to do with you?"
Lynn Preston’s aura was too intimidating. Cecilia, after stewing in frustration for a long moment, could only manage that one weak rebuttal.
Lynn Preston raised an eyebrow. "Sonia is my sister-in-law. You causing trouble for her is absolutely my business! But you—what the hell does it have to do with my sister-in-law whether your brother is dead or alive, in a coma or awake? What are you even doing here telling her this crap!"
"You..." Cecilia was so thoroughly shut down she was left speechless, stammering "you" for a long time without managing to form a complete sentence.
"Get lost, get lost, get lost!" Lynn Preston waved her hand dismissively, shooing her away. "Go back where you came from and stop being an eyesore to my sister-in-law. My sister-in-law has been in perfect health. If she suddenly feels nauseous and wants to throw up because of you, I’ll call the cops and have you arrested!"
Cecilia defiantly stuck her neck out. "You think the police will listen to you?"
Lynn Preston shrugged. "Of course the police won’t listen to me. I never planned on actually having you arrested. I just wanted to make you sick to your stomach."
With that, Lynn Preston rolled her eyes at Cecilia without any attempt to be subtle.
Cecilia’s face darkened. ’This is more disgusting than swallowing a fly,’ she thought.
Seeing her expression, Sonia couldn’t help but want to laugh, a triumphant look spreading across her face.
"Whether your brother is awake or in a coma has nothing to do with me. Stop bothering me."
"..." Cecilia stared at her in silence, her gaze deadly.
Seeing that she still wasn’t leaving, Felix Preston, on the video call, spoke up coldly, "Can’t you understand my wife? My wife told you to stop bothering her."
The disdain in Felix Preston’s voice was unmistakable. Cecilia’s face flushed red the moment she heard it.
The three of them had ganged up to humiliate her. No matter how angry she was, she didn’t have the gall to stay here any longer.
With reddened eyes, she shot Sonia a venomous glare, then turned and strode away in a huff.
"Ooh, since when did Big Brother start calling my sister-in-law ’wife’ instead of ’Sonia’?"
"...Stay out of adult business..."
The laughter of the Preston Family followed her like a haunting specter. Cecilia bit her lip hard. The more she tried to block it out and ignore it, the clearer it became.
Finally, unable to take it anymore, she stopped at the turn of the stairwell and, looking almost pathetic, pulled out her phone to call Ethan Lockwood.
"RING... RING... RING..."
After a few long rings, Ethan Lockwood’s cool voice finally came through.
"Cecilia."
"Ethan!" As soon as Cecilia spoke, she started crying uncontrollably. She hid in a corner of the hallway, weeping as she sought comfort from Ethan Lockwood.
"Ethan, I’m not happy. I feel so awful! Can you come and be with me?"
"..." Ethan Lockwood was silent for a few seconds before asking in a weary tone, "What is it now?"
"...Now?"
That one impatient word stung Cecilia’s heart deeply. The tears in her eyes suddenly flowed faster, and she began to sob as she spoke. "Ethan, what do you mean, ’now’? What have I done ’now’?"
Ethan Lockwood: "...Cecilia, if something’s wrong, just say it. Can you not make a scene?"
Cecilia: "How am I making a scene? Weren’t you the one who was impatient with me first?"
Ethan Lockwood argued weakly, "...I wasn’t."
"Yes, you were!" Cecilia broke down crying, clinging to the point like a petulant child who refused to be placated.
"Ethan, you’ve changed! You’re always busy with work lately, you never make time for me. You don’t care that I’m running around the hospital all by myself, you don’t care that I’m crying, and now you’re impatient with me! Do you not love me anymore? Are you seeing someone else?"
"Ethan, you’re being too much! You’re bullying me!"
Cecilia cried and shouted, but her words were meaningless, and Ethan Lockwood had no idea how to respond.
She cried her heart out, only realizing after a long time that Ethan Lockwood hadn’t responded to her at all.
She momentarily suppressed her sobs and asked pitifully into the phone, "Ethan, why aren’t you talking to me?"
Ethan Lockwood didn’t answer, only saying, "Alright, Cecilia. I have another meeting to get to, so I’m hanging up now."
With that, he hung up abruptly, not even giving Cecilia a chance to say goodbye.
Cecilia stood there numbly, holding her phone, feeling as if a part of her heart had shattered in an instant.
At the same time, an overwhelming wave of jealousy began to grow wildly from the shards of her broken heart.
