Chapter 153: Chapter 156: Only Sonia Quincy Can Get the Remaining Evidence
—Sonia, come downstairs.
After texting with Sonia Quincy so much, Renee Sinclair now only had to send the two words "come downstairs" to get her message across.
By the same token, Sonia now only needed to see those two words to know what Renee wanted.
"Felix?" Sonia asked, phone in hand, as she walked to the bathroom door and knocked.
The sound of the water suddenly stopped, and Felix’s gentle voice drifted out. "What is it?"
Sonia told yet another little lie. "My delivery is here. I’m just going downstairs to grab it."
"Delivery?" Felix sounded a little confused. "When did you order something? What is it?"
Sonia said, "Just some daily necessities. Tissues, toothpaste, facial wipes... We were running out here in the room, you know."
Felix asked, "Did you buy a lot? We’ll be heading home in a couple of days."
Sonia shook her head at the glass door. "I didn’t get much, just enough to last us the next few days. It’s light. I can get it by myself."
"Alright," Felix agreed. "Be careful, and call me if anything comes up."
Sonia replied, "Okay! You go on with your shower. Get all nice and clean for me."
Felix chuckled, amused, and couldn’t help but play along. "Alright, I’ll get all nice and clean, and you can have a sniff when you get back."
Sonia grabbed her bag from the table and gave the bathroom door one last knock. "I’m off!"
Felix’s voice came from inside, "Okay. I’ll be waiting for you."
At the curb by the hospital entrance, Renee Sinclair’s Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon was impossible to miss.
Sonia walked straight over, pulled open the passenger-side door, and just stood there.
"..." Renee Sinclair tilted her head, giving her a bewildered look. "Get in. What are you doing just standing there?"
"...Your G-Wagon is too high," Sonia said. "It’s a bit hard for me to climb in right now. Let’s just talk like this."
"Ah..." Renee sighed in resignation. "Fine. Next time, I’ll drive a lower car to meet you."
"Okay." Sonia nodded, then got straight to the point. "What did you bring for me this time?"
Renee opened her shoulder bag and pulled out a manila envelope.
"The photos of Cecilia Quincy’s walk-in closet you asked for."
Sonia reached out, took the envelope, and said, "Thank you," before opening it to inspect the photos.
There were five photos in total. Two showed the current-season clothes Cecilia had been favoring lately. The other three, taken as per Sonia’s instructions, were of out-of-season outfits that Cecilia rarely wore.
Cecilia had a lot of out-of-season clothes, but very few of them were all black.
Sonia scrutinized the three photos and, in the second to last one, spotted the all-black outfit Cecilia had worn when she went to sell the watch.
"These photos are perfect. I’m very happy with them. Please thank Aunt Collins for me." Sonia gathered the photos and carefully tucked them into her bag.
Renee waved her hand dismissively. "Sonia, what do you need these photos for anyway? Did Cecilia steal something from you?"
Instead of answering, Sonia countered with a question of her own. "Didn’t your system give you any information about me?"
"...Tch." Renee scoffed in exasperation. "This useless system of mine... everything costs favorability points. My points have been in the negatives for ages, so how am I supposed to ’buy’ information about you?"
"Oh." Sonia just raised an eyebrow, offering only that single word in response.
Seeing that Sonia had no intention of elaborating, Renee tactfully dropped the subject. "So, is that everything you needed me to find? Or is there anything else I can get for you?"
"No, that’s everything." Sonia took two steps back, a small smile playing on her lips as she looked at Renee. "You’ve found everything I needed you to. The rest... I have to get myself."
Renee frowned, her eyes scanning Sonia from head to toe. She was clearly curious, but she didn’t ask.
"Alright then, I’m off."
Sonia closed the passenger-side door for her and softly said two words: "See you."
After lunch, Lynn Preston took time off work to make a special trip to the hospital.
It was the day of Sonia’s prenatal check-up.
Felix’s leg still wasn’t well enough for him to walk far, so he couldn’t take Sonia. The responsibility naturally fell to Lynn.
Lynn linked arms with Sonia, leading her out of the hospital and straight toward a Maybach parked at the curb.
Sonia’s brow furrowed slightly as she eyed the Maybach emblem. "Is this car... Liam Joyce’s?"
"It is..." Lynn said through gritted teeth. "He’s keeping a very tight leash on me now. Everywhere I go, he has his assistant shadow me. I’m practically forced to take his car."
"Why?" Hearing this, Sonia felt a pang of worry. "Is he starting to suspect you? Why is he watching you so closely?"
Lynn replied, "He doesn’t suspect me. He’s just extremely possessive and controlling. He wants to know my every move, every second of the day."
"..." Sonia rolled her eyes in exasperation. "Aren’t you two not even official yet? From the sound of it, he’s already acting like he’s your boyfriend."
"Hmph," Lynn sneered. "I suppose my failure to shut him down completely has given him the confidence to act this way."
"Sonia," Lynn added in a low voice, "his personal assistant is driving. Once we’re in the car, let’s stick to small talk. Not a word about anything else."
Sonia raised an eyebrow. "Got it."
To ensure a smooth ride for the mother-to-be, the Maybach was driven at a leisurely pace. The trip, which normally would have taken half an hour, ended up lasting nearly forty-five minutes.
Felix had already scheduled all the appointments for the check-up in advance. Sonia went in with the confirmation, and after waiting in line for less than ten minutes, her tests began.
Just as she came out, a video call from Felix rang on her phone.
Sonia found a place to sit before answering the call.
"Sonia." Felix’s face lit up with a smile the moment he saw her. He had such a goofy, lovestruck look on his face, it was almost embarrassing.
But Sonia loved seeing him like that.
"How did you know I was done with my tests?" Sonia asked, tilting her head with a smile.
On screen, Felix adjusted his glasses. "Just a guess," he said softly. "How long until you get the results?"
Sonia replied, "Less than two hours. It’ll be quick."
Felix nodded. "Good."
"Brother!"
After they finished, Lynn suddenly leaned into the frame, grinning. "I heard about the names you picked for the babies!"
"And?" Felix asked. "What do you think? Are they good names?"
Lynn put on a serious face to deliver her critique. "I think the name Aurora is lovely, but Wilder seems a bit... hasty."
"How is it hasty?" Sonia turned to look at her, giving Felix a view of her profile. "I think the name Wilder is very unique."
"Mmm..." Lynn shook her head. "It’s unique, I’ll give you that, but I just don’t think it’s as good as Aurora..."
Sonia argued, "That’s not true, they’re both equally beautiful..."
"They’re not..."
The two women, having reached a difference of opinion on the names, immediately launched into a back-and-forth debate. Felix watched them through the screen, chiming in every so often to back Sonia up.
The three of them were having a lively chat.
Just then, as luck would have it, Cecilia Quincy walked past them, holding a thick stack of lab reports. Their cheerful laughter caught her completely off guard, piercing her ears like a sharp blade.
