Chapter 151: Chapter 154: Bloom Preston is Unhappy
"A million?"
Sonia Quincy was stunned.
Felix Preston frowned. "Is Jasper Linden investing personally?"
Evan Yates nodded. "He’s investing in his personal capacity. It has nothing to do with Flynn Trading."
"...Why?" Felix Preston asked after a few seconds of silence, completely baffled.
"...W-Why?" Evan Yates was thrown by the question. After a moment of stunned silence, he burst out laughing. "Why else? Obviously, it’s because he sees the commercial potential of our game."
"..." Felix Preston’s brow furrowed even tighter. He didn’t seem to think that was the case.
Logically, getting an investor should have been a good thing, especially since their studio was in desperate need of funding. But for some reason, when Felix Preston heard that Jasper Linden planned to invest a million personally, he didn’t feel happy at all. On the contrary, he felt a subtle sense of anxiety.
It was the same feeling he’d had when he found out Jasper Linden had secretly transferred a hundred thousand to Sonia Quincy—anxious and unsettling.
He lifted his gaze slightly to look at Jasper Linden across the square table. A layer of vigilance, mingled with faint hostility, gradually rose in his eyes.
"What’s wrong, Preston?" Seeing that Felix Preston’s expression was off, Evan Yates asked curiously. "Someone’s investing in our studio and you’re not happy?"
"..." With a stony expression, Felix Preston took two boxes of crayfish out of the plastic bag, placed them on the table, and said coldly,
"I’m not happy."
"...Huh?" Evan Yates was completely confused.
"Why aren’t you happy?" Sonia Quincy was also puzzled.
Felix Preston shot her a look of mock reproach, then reached out and gently tapped the tip of her nose. "I don’t know."
"Hm?" Sonia Quincy was now even more confused than Evan Yates.
After taking everything out of the take-out bags and setting it on the dining table, Lynn Preston called for everyone to sit down.
They were all old friends, so they didn’t feel awkward eating together. In fact, half of them had already seated themselves before Lynn even said anything.
This get-together was rather spontaneous. They hadn’t gone out to a restaurant, nor were there any extra activities planned. Everyone had simply bought a dish from outside, and they had "gathered" for a meal.
But that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits.
The table was full of laughter and chatter; everyone was happy and relaxed.
Everyone except Lynn Preston.
It wasn’t that Lynn Preston was unhappy, but her behavior was a bit odd at times.
For instance, ever since she sat down, she kept turning her head to glance at Sonia Quincy.
Her gaze would shift from scrutinizing to confused, and then to disappointed, as if Sonia had done something complicated and unspeakable to her.
But in reality, Sonia had been focused on eating ever since she sat down, barely saying a few words.
"Sigh..."
After another inexplicable stare, Lynn Preston propped her chin on her hand and let out a heavy sigh.
"..."
Sonia Quincy finally couldn’t take it anymore. She whipped her head around, meeting Lynn Preston’s gaze before she had a chance to look away.
"What is it?" she asked bluntly.
"Uh..." Lynn Preston froze for a second, then forced a smile. "Sister-in-law, what if there is?"
"..." Sonia Quincy gave her a look that was hard to put into words. "Of course."
Lynn Preston put down her chopsticks and fawningly linked her arm with Sonia Quincy’s. "Sister-in-law, if there’s something on my mind, can I ask you directly?"
Sonia Quincy took a bite of the duck head in her hand. "You can."
Lynn Preston: "If I ask you, will you tell me the honest truth without hiding anything?"
Sonia Quincy: "...I will."
"Hehe..." Lynn Preston giggled, blinking her eyes rapidly. "Then I’m asking?"
Sonia Quincy: "...Ask."
Lynn Preston then leaned in, pretending to casually move closer to Sonia Quincy’s ear, and asked very tactfully, "Sister-in-law, does my brother know you met with Ethan Lockwood privately?"
"!!!" Sonia Quincy’s eyes flew wide open.
Seeing her reaction, Lynn Preston’s heart sank.
’It’s over. Something bad is going to happen...’
"Y-You saw everything?" Sonia Quincy turned to stare at Lynn Preston, her eyes filled only with astonishment, not guilt or panic.
Lynn Preston was slightly taken aback but nodded. "Yeah, I saw it all."
"...Okay." Sonia Quincy’s reaction was mild. She was even in the mood to ask, "So what you want to ask is what he and I did when we met that day, right?"
Lynn Preston blinked. "...Uh-huh."
Sonia Quincy pulled out her phone and said concisely, "Get on WeChat. I’ll message you."
"...Oh." Lynn Preston did as she was told.
And so, the two of them started messaging each other on WeChat, face-to-face.
Felix Preston watched them with a strange look on his face before he finally couldn’t help but ask, "Are you two socially anxious or something? You’re sitting right next to each other, why are you using WeChat?"
"You don’t get it, Bro!" Lynn Preston was at a critical point in their conversation, so she just fobbed him off with a random excuse. "My sister-in-law and I are sharing secrets. You guys can’t hear."
"What secrets?" Evan Yates asked curiously. "Secrets even we can’t hear?"
"Nope!" Sonia Quincy and Lynn Preston said in unison.
After speaking, Lynn Preston added, "This is a private matter between us girls. You big men shouldn’t be so nosy!"
"Mrs. Preston~" Evan Yates deliberately caused trouble, leaning against Mrs. Preston like a delicate damsel and saying in a pinched voice, "Look at those two! They’re saying you’re a big man, too~"
"Get off." Mrs. Preston held back a laugh as she shooed Evan Yates away. "Lynn was talking about you boys, not me."
"Hmph..." Evan Yates let out an affected "hmph" and, leaning to the side, tried to lean on Jasper Linden.
Jasper Linden dodged him as if he were toxic and said with disgust, "Get away from me. Don’t be gross."
With nowhere left to turn, Evan Yates cast a pleading look at Felix Preston. "Preston..."
"Get lost." Felix Preston stared at him coldly. The words coming from a mouth that looked so kissable were so cold and heartless.
"..." Evan Yates’s heart died. He picked up the Sprite in front of him and downed it in one gulp.
"Whoa, Sister-in-law, you’re seriously amazing."
After learning the full story of Sonia Quincy’s meeting with Ethan Lockwood, Lynn Preston couldn’t help but give Sonia a big thumbs-up.
"Hey..." Sonia Quincy waved a hand at her dismissively and said in a low voice, "Keep it on the down-low."
Lynn Preston: "OK!"
"Remember to keep it a secret for me. It’s not the right time to reveal anything yet," Sonia Quincy instructed her with a serious face.
She pressed her lips together tightly, then brought her thumb and index finger together to mime zipping her mouth shut.
"My lips? They’re famously sealed in Aethelburg!"
Sonia Quincy shot her a sidelong glance. "...I hope so."
"Hey, Jasper Linden, since everyone’s here now, why don’t you have a proper talk with Preston about your investment plan?"
Evan Yates had had too much Sprite and wasn’t thinking clearly. Even though Felix Preston had just said he was unhappy about Jasper Linden’s investment, Evan still went ahead and stepped on that landmine, bringing the topic up in front of everyone.
