Chapter 148: Chapter 151: Baby
"I’m back!"
Sonia Quincy pushed open the door to the hospital room and cheerfully greeted Felix Preston.
Felix had just finished up some business, so he was enjoying a rare moment of peace. When he saw Sonia return, he quickly put his phone down and sat obediently on the edge of the bed, waiting for her to come to him.
"Guess what I bought for you?" Sonia placed her bag on the table, then ambled over to Felix’s bedside, leisurely swinging the paper bag in her hand.
Hearing this, Felix immediately closed his eyes and wrinkled his nose, sniffing the air. He caught a faint, sweet scent.
"Is it roasted sweet potato?" he guessed uncertainly.
"Nope." Sonia sat down on the edge of the bed, watching him with a mysterious smile.
"Hmm..." He furrowed his brow slightly in thought, then guessed again, "Sugar-roasted chestnuts?"
"You got it! They’re sugar-roasted chestnuts!"
She pressed the warm bag of chestnuts into Felix’s hands and said in a tone one might use to coax a child, "You’ve been so good and worked so hard lately. As a reward, I bought you a bag of sugar-roasted chestnuts. Do you like them?"
Felix played along, nodding. "I love them. Thank you, wifey."
"...What are you calling me?"
The word "wifey" made Sonia’s face instantly flush red. She ducked her head in embarrassment, her chiding voice so weak it was barely audible.
Felix gazed at her and said with a smile, "I’m not just calling you whatever. Isn’t Sonia my wifey?"
"...Ahem." Sonia cleared her throat very deliberately, too embarrassed to speak.
Seeing her clam up, Felix took out his phone, opened WeChat, and replayed the voice message she had sent him right in front of her.
"Hubby, I’m coming home right now! Wait for me, okay!"
Her own bright, clear voice rang out in the hospital room. Sonia’s brow twitched, and the blush on her cheeks instantly spread to the tips of her ears.
"Sonia?" Felix tilted his head slightly, calling her name with a meaningful look.
Sonia scratched her head, mortified. The embarrassment was so intense she could have dug a hole with her toes.
She had sent that voice message on a whim when she was caught up in the moment. Who knew Felix would hold it over her head and use it now to cause her complete social death.
She kept her head down, staying silent under Felix’s heated gaze.
So, Felix played the voice message again.
"Hubby, I’m coming home right now! Wait for me, okay!"
"!!!" Sonia squeezed her eyes shut in a mix of shame and indignation.
Felix raised an eyebrow, studying her. "Sonia, you called me ’Hubby’ first. Can’t I call you ’Wifey’ in return?"
"...Of course you can!" Sonia finally spoke, her words ground out through clenched teeth.
"But, Mom and Lynn are here a lot. You can’t call me that in front of them."
"Why not?" Felix asked, feigning ignorance.
Sonia answered honestly enough, "Because I’m shy. I’m afraid they’ll hear and make fun of me."
"Ah..." Felix nodded, pretending to understand.
"So it’s because my Sonia is thin-skinned and afraid of being teased. How about this? I won’t call you ’Wifey’ in front of them. I’ll call you something else."
"Hm?" Sonia lifted her head, her face still red, and looked at him with hopeful eyes. "What’s this something else?"
The corners of his lips quirked into a smile. He scooted forward a little and pulled Sonia into his arms.
"Sonia, what do you want me to call you?"
Sonia poked his chest with her finger. "I don’t know. You tell me."
"Hmm..." Felix put on a show of thinking it over, then leaned down and pressed his lips to Sonia’s ear, whispering an incredibly intimate and mushy word.
"Baby."
"!!!" Sonia’s breath hitched. ’This is even more embarrassing than ’Wifey’!’ she thought.
"Y-You’re talking nonsense!"
Sonia’s heart was hammering—THUMP-THUMP-THUMP—and her flustered gaze darted everywhere.
Seeing her reaction, Felix knew she liked the pet name, so he whispered it again.
"Baby?"
"...Aaaah!"
Overcome with embarrassment, Sonia couldn’t help but shriek as she clapped a hand over Felix’s mouth.
"Watch your words! And stop spouting nonsense!"
With his mouth covered, Felix couldn’t speak, so he could only blink his eyes in protest.
His eyes were naturally gentle, and when he looked at Sonia so earnestly, a smile playing in them, she felt even more flustered than when he’d called her "Baby."
It was as if he knew how captivating his eyes were. Seeing that Sonia wasn’t letting go, he gave another slow, meaningful blink.
"..." Sonia swallowed hard. She had well and truly lost to him.
"I’m not teasing you anymore." She pulled her hand back, took a warm chestnut from the paper bag, and personally peeled it for Felix.
After eating the one, Felix immediately took a chestnut himself to peel. Once he’d peeled two, he carefully fed them to Sonia.
Sonia teased him, "I feed you one, and you give me two back. What, you don’t want to lose to me?"
"That’s not it." Felix pushed up his glasses, which had slipped down his nose, and looked Sonia right in the eye. "I’m feeding you two," he said earnestly, "to show you that if you’re willing to be good to me, I’ll give you back double the tenderness and sincerity."
"Sonia, I’ll never let you get the short end of the stick with me."
"...I know." Sonia smiled at him.
So he peeled two more chestnuts and fed them both to Sonia.
As Sonia savored the sweet, soft texture in her mouth, she suddenly said something that completely ruined the mood.
"Felix Preston, how exactly did Cecilia Quincy frame you back then?"
"..."
Felix’s hands, in the middle of peeling a chestnut, froze. The smile in his eyes vanished in an instant.
"...Why are you suddenly asking about this?" He looked up at Sonia, his tone still gentle.
Sonia said, "It just suddenly came to mind, so I thought I’d ask. If you don’t want to answer, just pretend I never asked. It’s okay."
"...It’s fine." Felix looked away, finished peeling the chestnut in his hand, and fed it to Sonia.
"There’s nothing I’m unwilling to answer when it comes to you, Sonia."
At his words, Sonia’s gaze immediately softened. She didn’t say anything, her silence encouraging him to continue.
Felix said, "That whole incident was bizarre. I honestly don’t know how it even started. Besides, on the day it supposedly happened, I wasn’t even at school. I only found out later from a roommate that I’d been framed for something so serious."
"As you know, Cecilia Quincy was a younger student in my department, but we barely knew each other. We had basically no interaction outside of work and studies. I don’t know why she would accuse me of harassing her, and I have no idea where she got those chat screenshots."
"Because I wasn’t there at the time, I missed the best opportunity to clear my name. So that ’harassment’ accusation stuck with me all the way until I graduated from college."
