Chapter 139: Chapter 142: A Matter of Felix Preston’s Innocence
Once the contract was signed, the two million officially became the operating funds for Felix Preston’s studio.
Although Felix Preston couldn’t leave the hospital yet, it didn’t stop his otome game project from moving on to the next stage.
Once the funding was secured, Evan Yates immediately started recruiting on major job search apps. The current economic climate was poor, and many people were unemployed. As soon as the job postings went up, Felix Preston’s WeChat was immediately flooded.
"Hello, Mr. Preston. My name is Shirley Lowell. I’m twenty-three years old and a recent graduate from the Chinese Language and Literature department at Aethelburg University. While I don’t have any work experience, I wrote five full-length novels during my time in university and have strong story-creation abilities..."
First thing in the morning, just as Sonia Quincy popped the first steamed custard bun into her mouth, Felix Preston began a video interview from his hospital bed.
This was the second interviewee of the day. Judging by Felix Preston’s reaction, he seemed quite satisfied with her.
"Yawn..." Sonia Quincy let out a sleepy yawn, sitting on the sofa and eating breakfast while she watched Felix Preston work.
By the time Felix Preston was temporarily done with his work, she had already finished her breakfast.
"Are you full?" Felix Preston asked when he saw her put down her chopsticks.
Sonia Quincy nodded, got up from the sofa, and walked over to Felix Preston’s bedside. "I’m full."
"Good girl." Felix Preston took her hand and placed a light kiss on the back of it. "Mom said you’re going out later?"
"Mhm." Sonia Quincy looked into Felix Preston’s eyes and lied through her teeth. "A college friend I haven’t seen in ages recently came back to Aethelburg, and she invited me out to a movie and dinner."
Hearing this, Felix Preston immediately pulled out his phone. "Where are you eating? I’ll have Evan Yates come and drive you."
"No need." Sonia Quincy reached out and pushed his phone down. "We’re just eating near the hospital. I can walk there myself. Besides, the studio is hiring these past couple of days, and Evan Yates is already swamped. There’s no need to trouble him with driving me."
"Alright, then." After hearing what she said, Felix Preston put his phone down.
"So, when are you planning to leave?"
Sonia Quincy glanced at the time and said, rather cruelly, "Ah, I have to go right now."
"Okay." Felix Preston let go of her hand, instead grabbing her open trench coat. Before she left, he meticulously fastened the buttons and tied the belt for her.
"It’s getting colder. You need to dress warmly so you don’t catch a cold."
Sonia Quincy lowered her gaze and smiled at him. "As long as you’re here to dress me, I can’t be bothered to worry about it."
"Okay." Felix Preston loved it when she depended on him. Hearing her say that, his heart, which had been relentlessly tormented by interviewees, finally showed signs of life again.
Taking advantage of the fact that Mrs. Preston had gone to get medicine and hadn’t returned, he quickly pulled Sonia Quincy into his arms and planted several noisy kisses on her face.
Only after kissing her did he reluctantly let her go.
"Go on, be safe. If it’s too far and you don’t feel like walking, just take a taxi."
Sonia Quincy replied with an "Okay," then turned, picked up her bag, and left the ward, thoroughly satisfied.
Felix Preston was staying in Aethelburg’s largest public hospital. On the street right next door, a new shopping mall had recently opened, and the restaurant Sonia Quincy was going to was located inside.
The hospital wasn’t far from the mall. Sonia Quincy took a leisurely stroll over and entered the mall’s main doors in less than ten minutes.
Standing at the mall’s elevators, Sonia Quincy took out her phone and sent Renee Sinclair a message on WeChat.
—I’m at the mall. Where do I go from here?
That’s right. Sonia Quincy had told Felix Preston another little lie. The person she was meeting today wasn’t an old classmate she hadn’t seen in ages, but her partner in crime, Renee Sinclair.
Renee Sinclair replied almost a minute later.
—Take the express elevator to the fifth floor. When you get out, turn right and walk all the way to the end. I’m waiting for you at Haidilao.
Sonia Quincy frowned as she read the message.
—You’re meeting someone for Haidilao this early in the morning?
Renee Sinclair: It wasn’t me who invited him for Haidilao; he’s the one who wanted it! We’re asking for a favor, after all. How could I say no to such a small request?
Sonia Quincy pursed her lips in resignation.
—Fine, I’m coming up now.
After replying, she put her phone back in her bag and stepped into an elevator just as the doors opened.
It was only ten in the morning, and Haidilao had just opened for the day, so there weren’t many people inside.
Sonia Quincy gave Renee Sinclair’s name to a waiter, who led her directly to Renee’s table.
"Hey, you’re here."
Seeing Sonia Quincy approach, Renee Sinclair immediately shot the man across from her a meaningful look.
The man immediately looked up, his gaze first landing on Sonia Quincy’s face, then moving to her obviously pregnant belly. His expression instantly turned to one of surprise.
"Sit." Renee Sinclair patted the spot next to her, gesturing for Sonia Quincy to sit down.
Sonia Quincy set down her shoulder bag and, carefully cradling her belly, sat down next to Renee Sinclair.
Renee Sinclair looked at the man across from them and made the introduction. "Martin Thornton, this is the person who really wanted to see you today—Felix Preston’s wife, Sonia Quincy."
"Hello," Martin Thornton said, greeting Sonia Quincy somewhat reservedly.
Sonia Quincy sized him up for a moment before replying with a smile, "Hello, Martin Thornton. I hear you were Felix Preston’s roommate for all four years of college?"
Martin Thornton nodded. "Yes. Although Felix Preston and I haven’t kept in touch since graduation, we actually got along pretty well in school. I’m... not very bright, and I’m not a smooth talker. Felix was the only one in the dorm who didn’t exclude me. I’m very grateful to him."
"Ah..." Sonia Quincy raised an eyebrow. ’This makes today’s negotiation much more promising.’
The food had all arrived. Even though Sonia Quincy had already eaten breakfast, she picked up her chopsticks anyway to avoid making Martin Thornton feel awkward.
"Let’s eat first. We can talk as we eat."
Martin Thornton: "Okay."
"Martin Thornton, do you know why I wanted to see you today?" Sonia Quincy asked in a gentle tone as she swished a piece of beef tripe in the hot pot and placed it in her bowl.
Martin Thornton, his head down as he picked at the food, answered somewhat woodenly, "I don’t know. When Miss Sinclair contacted me, she only said you had something to ask me. I don’t know what it is, but she said it’s very important to Felix Preston. Felix was very kind to me in school; he even bought me food often. I wanted to help him, so I came."
Sonia Quincy: "Thank you for being willing to help. But don’t be nervous. What I need to ask isn’t anything terribly serious."
Martin Thornton: "Okay, please ask away. As long as it’s something I know and remember, I’ll tell you every single word."
Sonia Quincy had already prepared what she was going to say before she arrived. So, once the topic was broached, she got straight to the point.
"It would have been during your senior year. Did a guy suddenly show up and ask you to tell Felix Preston to stop harassing his girlfriend?"
