Chapter 138: Chapter 141: Pleasure Doing Business With You, Mr. Preston

Sonia Quincy had no intention of stringing her along. Now that she had what she wanted, she really ought to tell the other woman a way to make some money.

She opened their chat window and quickly typed out a few lines before sending them.

—Liam Joyce has a crush on my sister-in-law, but he’s not serious about her. If you feel awkward about threatening him over work, you can try leveraging his feelings for her. I have the document now anyway. To show your resolve, you can delete it from your phone right in front of him. That way, you’ll ensure your own safety and get a considerable sum of money.

It took a while for Yvette Fuller to reply.

—Got it.

The conversation ended there. The matter was, at last, perfectly resolved.

Sonia Quincy put down her phone, leaned back in her seat, and let out a long sigh of relief. "Finally! Success!"

Hearing this, Evan Yates glanced at her in the rearview mirror and asked with a smile, "Sonia, is everything settled?"

Sonia Quincy nodded emphatically. "Completely settled! And the document is all there—it has chat screenshots, surveillance footage, and audio recordings. Liam Joyce and Ethan Lockwood are dead to rights now!"

"Hmm..." Evan Yates’s eyes narrowed in satisfaction. He then pulled his phone from his jacket pocket and switched the call, which had been going on for over an hour, to speakerphone.

"Preston, did you hear that? Sonia handled it perfectly! We’ve got the evidence of Liam Joyce and Ethan Lockwood teaming up to frame you!"

"I did." Felix Preston’s smiling voice drifted from the phone’s speaker. "I heard."

"...Huh?!"

Hearing Felix Preston’s voice so unexpectedly, Sonia Quincy shot bolt upright out of reflex.

"Who’s talking?" Her eyes widened as she stared at the phone in Evan Yates’s hand, utterly shocked. "Is that Felix Preston talking?"

The amusement in Felix Preston’s voice deepened instantly. "Yes, it is Felix Preston speaking."

"You... you two..." Sonia was so surprised she was stumbling over her words. "You’ve been on the phone this whole time?"

Evan Yates replied, "Yep. Preston was worried Yvette Fuller might give you a hard time, so he’s been on the phone with me ever since we left the car. He heard your whole little song and dance with her loud and clear!"

"It wasn’t a song and dance."

Before Sonia Quincy could even quibble, Felix Preston had already found the perfect justification for her. "Sonia was appealing to her with logic and moving her with emotion—a marvelous combination of reason and wit."

"Yes, exactly," Sonia accepted readily, not feeling the least bit guilty.

Felix Preston continued, "Besides, Yvette Fuller did walk away with a solid three hundred thousand. My Sonia had to fork over so much money, so what’s a little trickery between them?"

"Not at all, not in the slightest," Evan chimed in like a total sycophant. "Preston’s right. My view of the matter was too shallow!"

"Hah..." Felix chuckled on the other end of the line, then said, "Hand the phone to Sonia. I want to speak with her."

Evan tactfully did as he was told. "Here, Sonia."

Sonia reached out, took the phone, and instinctively turned off the speakerphone.

"What did you want to talk to me about?"

The whoosh of the wind and the rumble of the wheels by her ear instantly faded. Felix guessed that Sonia must have turned off the speaker, and his tone immediately grew more intimate.

"Where are you? How much longer until you’re back?"

Sonia glanced at the car’s GPS, her voice languid. "About another hour, I think."

"That long..."

She wasn’t sure if it was just her imagination, but Sonia felt that Felix sounded exceptionally pitiful and wronged when he said that.

She paused for a moment, then asked in a softened voice, "What’s wrong? Are you upset?"

Felix Preston: "No."

Sonia Quincy: "Then what is it?"

Felix Preston: "It’s that I miss you. Felix Preston misses you."

His low, slightly hoarse voice flowed into Sonia Quincy’s ear through the phone. Her scalp tingled, and her whole body felt as if it had been zapped by a gentle current, making her very heart tremble.

Felix Preston’s words were like a demon’s whisper, throwing Sonia Quincy’s heart into utter chaos.

"You..." Her cheeks grew warm, as if flushed by the sound of his voice. Sonia took a few breaths to steady herself before saying in a low voice, "What are you talking about? This is someone else’s phone."

Felix Preston’s tone was utterly unconcerned. "What does it matter if it’s someone else’s phone? Is it going to magically transmit my words to its owner?"

The remark was shameless, but he did have a point.

Sonia was left speechless.

"...W-where’s your sense of shame? Did it just disappear overnight?"

Felix Preston replied matter-of-factly, "Why would I need a sense of shame to talk to my own wife?"

"..."

Fine. Just fine. Sonia was utterly defeated by his shamelessness.

"Sonia," Felix Preston called to her again after a few seconds.

Sonia bit her lip, embarrassed, and replied in a muffled voice, "What is it?"

Felix Preston: "You’ve been out for hours. Did you miss me at all?"

"..." At his words, Sonia looked up at Evan, who was humming to himself as he drove. She said uncomfortably, "There’s someone else here. I can’t answer that right now."

"Alright, then." Felix knew she was just being shy, so he didn’t tease her further. Besides, it was Evan’s phone, and it wasn’t appropriate for the couple to monopolize it for too long. With that, his tone immediately became serious again.

"You still have a long way to go, so get some rest in the car. We can talk more when you’re back by my side."

"Okay," Sonia replied obediently before handing the phone back to Evan Yates.

Although Evan Yates was single, he could guess from Sonia Quincy’s flushed cheeks that Felix Preston, despite being in a hospital bed, had been up to no good on the call.

He took the phone back with a mischievous grin and teased, "Done whispering sweet nothings with Preston, Sonia?"

Sonia clenched her fist in a mix of shame and indignation. "Nonsense! Watch it, or I’ll give you a good thwack on the forehead!"

"HAHAHAHA!" Evan Yates roared with laughter.

...

Having successfully obtained the item Yvette Fuller had been hiding, Sonia Quincy returned to the hospital and signed an investment and partnership agreement with Felix Preston.

The agreement was drafted very formally, with every clause adhering to market standards. Although Felix Preston had the convenient status of being Sonia Quincy’s "husband," he didn’t shortchange her one bit on the dividends.

On the contrary, to thank Sonia Quincy for being the first to "test the waters" with her investment, the agreement also stipulated that once the game was successfully launched, Felix Preston would gift her ten percent of the studio’s shares as a token of his gratitude.

Sonia Quincy didn’t understand much about these things, but after a quick look confirmed she wasn’t getting the short end of the stick, she decisively signed her name to the agreement.

After she put down the pen, Felix Preston extended his right hand like a gentleman. "It’s a pleasure to work with you, Miss Quincy."

Sonia stared at his hand for a few seconds before raising her own and giving it a very businesslike shake.

"A pleasure to work with you, Mr. Preston."
