Chapter 399: Chapter 399: Going Crazy Wanting a Daughter-in-law

"Mom, we have company. Could you at least spare me some dignity?" Xia Qiuming said helplessly from his hospital bed.

"What dignity do you have left to spare? If you really cared about your image, you would’ve agreed to go on those blind dates and gotten married early, so people would stop gossiping about your mother behind her back."

"Ouch, my wound hurts," Xia Qiuming said, feigning severe pain to change the subject.

Gu Jiaojiao hadn’t expected Xia Qiuming’s mother to be so straightforward and blunt.

She calmly continued eating and even moved a dish that Mu Ziquan couldn’t reach closer to him. "Eat more fish. It’ll help your wound heal faster."

"Thanks. You’ve worked hard today, you should eat more too." Seeing that there were other people in the room, Mu Ziquan refrained from calling her his usual address for her.

When Mrs. Xia heard her son say his wound hurt, she stopped nagging him and even thoughtfully tucked in the corner of his blanket.

Overhearing the conversation at the next bed, she turned and saw Mu Ziquan’s face. He looked to be about the same age as her son.

’He’s actually married! And his wife is not only fashionable but also very caring.’

Infuriated, she couldn’t help but lecture her son again. "Look at you! You’re both patients in the hospital, but he has a wife to take care of him."

"And you? You’re thirty and still all alone. While others are feasting, you don’t even get a sip of soup. No wonder you can only watch while they eat."

"Ma’am, you’ve misunderstood. I am married, but I’m not his wife," Gu Jiaojiao explained helplessly.

Who knew that upon hearing this, Mrs. Xia’s face would immediately show deep disappointment? She sighed and said, "You two look so good together, but you’re not actually a couple?"

Mrs. Xia’s words were so shocking that Mu Ziquan, who was in the middle of eating, almost dropped his bowl.

He thought Mrs. Xia had seen right through him, and his eyes filled with shock and disbelief.

’How could someone in this world be so perceptive? Do we really look like a married couple?!’

"Mom, what nonsense are you talking about? She’s staying here to take care of both of us patients," Xia Qiuming said awkwardly.

He naturally avoided revealing Gu Jiaojiao’s identity because too many of the Xia family’s female relatives were visiting.

He knew his mom could be unreliable, but he never expected her to be *this* unreliable. "I’m sorry. My mom just has no filter."

"It’s fine. Professor Xia, your mom is just desperate for a daughter-in-law. You’d better hurry up and go on those blind dates," Gu Jiaojiao teased with a smile.

Since Mu Ziquan was her grandnephew, she believed it was impossible for him to have any other kind of feelings for her, so she didn’t mind the comment.

It was precisely this attitude of hers that made Mu Ziquan’s heart sink.

"Xiao Ming, weren’t you assisting in a surgery today? How did you get injured?" Mr. Xia finally had a chance to ask.

"What other reason could there be? It’s because I’m too outstanding. Someone got jealous and wanted to get rid of me," Xia Qiuming said calmly.

"That makes sense. Our Xiao Ming has been bright and clever since he was a child. He studied abroad, and now he’s come back with such superb medical skills."

’Even I’m jealous of him; it’d be strange if others weren’t.’ Uncle Xia didn’t say this last part out loud, afraid his father would scold him.

"So, was the surgery today a success?" Mr. Xia asked worriedly.

"The surgery was a great success. See? The patient from today is the one over there, wolfing down his food," Xia Qiuming said, pointing a finger at the next bed.

Mu Ziquan: ’...What a blatant lie. Which one of your eyes saw me wolfing down my food?’

’I’m being very refined in front of Grand-aunt, okay?!’

"Grandpa Xia, Aunt Xia, hello uncles and aunts. My name is Mu Ziquan. I’m so grateful to Professor Xia for his miraculous healing touch today, which has gotten me back on my feet."

"Mu Ziquan? I heard the lead surgeon for your operation today was Divine Doctor Su Gu? Has the Divine Doctor left?" Uncle Xia asked in surprise.

"I don’t know. I was under anesthesia at the time."

"I don’t know. I was injured at the time."

Mu Ziquan and Xia Qiuming spoke in unison. Neither of them wanted Uncle Xia to know that Divine Doctor Su Gu was here.

After a moment of silence, the Xia family’s female relatives swarmed forward, chattering as they fussed over Xia Qiuming.

Many of them hoped to marry their own nieces to Xia Qiuming, so they were especially solicitous, asking about his well-being.

Seeing so many people in the hospital room, Gu Jiaojiao quietly asked Mu Ziquan, "Why isn’t your bodyguard here yet?"

"Mu Shan took your motorcycle to go back. The hospital is heavily guarded by special forces today, so the others are all waiting outside and staying out of sight."

"Oh. Well, you should lie down and rest for a bit. The round trip by motorcycle should be quick." After speaking, Gu Jiaojiao sat by the hospital bed and began reading a medical book.

Mu Ziquan obediently lay down on the bed and closed his eyes to rest. Even though the room was noisy, he didn’t dare open his eyes, afraid that Gu Jiaojiao would see the emotions in them.

Following Mu Ziquan’s instructions, Mu Shan rode Gu Jiaojiao’s motorcycle down the road.

Not far from the hospital, he was blocked by ten motorcycles. They said they wanted to compete with his riding skills.

When Mu Shan saw a dozen or so motorcycles blocking his way, he was no pushover.

Without a second word, he quickly twisted the throttle and charged straight toward the group.

BANG! 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

Mu Shan collided with one of the bikers, who then crashed to the ground.

Without even blinking, he hit the gas and surged forward again, instantly leaving the dozen or so motorcycles in his dust.

The other bikers all revved their engines, the roaring sound echoing as they chased after Mu Shan from behind.

A few of the more timid bikers saw how formidable he was and realized they couldn’t compete, so they turned around and fled.

But several young bikers remained, chasing Mu Shan with all their might.

Three of them had already pulled up alongside Mu Shan. He suddenly swerved, slamming the front of his bike into the body of one of the other motorcycles.

VROOOM... VROOOOM...

The motorcycle’s exhaust pipe spewed smoke, and the sound of its tires screeching against the pavement was sharp and ear-piercing.

The riders on the other two motorcycles screamed in terror, "AHH... HELP..."

Han Jingyi, Xiao Rui, and their cousins hadn’t gone into the hospital today.

Because security at the hospital was tight, they parked a short distance away, waiting in the car for their "grand-aunt" to come out.

Eager to catch a glimpse of Gu Jiaojiao’s splendor, the whole carload of them even ate lunch in their car. By afternoon, they still hadn’t seen their "grand-aunt."

When they saw the cool motorcycle from that morning leaving the hospital, Han Jingyi immediately drove after it.

Han Jingyi’s car quickly overtook the motorcycle. Xiao Rui said in astonishment, "That’s strange. The bike doesn’t seem as impressive as it was this morning, does it?"

His cousin looked at the scene in the rearview mirror. "It’s a different rider. This morning, that motorcycle overtook our car effortlessly."

"Right, I knew something was off. If it were the same person, there’s no way I could have passed them," Han Jingyi said, also looking in the rearview mirror.

"The rider this morning had some seriously cool and spectacular skills. This person’s silhouette is different, too."

"It looks like he’s chasing us. Should we wait for him?" Han Jingyi’s younger cousin asked.
