Chapter 10: Crossroads of Blood and Lies

Chapter 10

The desert wind carried the scent of creosote and distant rain as Rowe eased her matte-black Dyna Street Bob to a stop a short distance from the old crossroads shack.

A lone lantern flickered inside the weathered structure, its weak glow spilling through cracked windows and casting long, uneasy shadows across the desert floor.

Her heartbeat echoed in her ears, steady and relentless, matching the calm rumble of Reaper’s voice in the hidden earpiece beneath her hair.

"Stay sharp, baby," he murmured. "We’re half a mile back. If anything feels wrong, say the word. We’ll be there."

"I know."

Adjusting the wire beneath her cut, she stepped away from the bike. The graze wound along her side still ached beneath its bandage, but adrenaline dulled the pain to a distant throb.

She approached the shack slowly, boots crunching over loose gravel, one hand hovering near the pistol at her hip.

The night felt unnaturally still.

Heavy.

Waiting.

The door creaked open before she reached it.

A woman stepped into the lantern light.

Rowe froze.

The resemblance stole the breath from her lungs.

Dark waves framed the woman’s face. The same sharp cheekbones. The same stubborn tilt of the chin.

Only the eyes were different.

Older.

More haunted.

"You came," the woman said quietly, scanning the darkness behind Rowe.

"Alone?"

"As alone as I could manage."

Rowe held her gaze.

"You said you had answers about our family. About our mother."

For a long moment, neither woman moved.

Then Raven stepped aside.

"Come in."

The shack’s interior was bare—a rickety table, two mismatched chairs, and the lantern burning between them.

Dust coated every surface.

Silence lingered as they sat across from one another.

Finally, Raven spoke.

"Mom didn’t abandon us."

The words struck Rowe harder than any punch.

"She was taken the same night Dad was murdered."

Rowe’s throat tightened.

"The faction inside the Reapers sold her to the Devil’s Disciples. She was pregnant with me. They kept her alive as leverage, and I was born in one of their safehouses."

Everything Rowe believed about her past shifted beneath her feet.

"Why wait until now?" she asked quietly.

"I didn’t know the whole truth until recently," Raven admitted. "One of the old ladies who raised me finally told me everything. I only learned about you and Cade a few months ago."

She reached into her jacket and slid a worn envelope across the table.

"Dad left more than one letter."

Rowe stared at it.

"This one leads to a safe."

"Inside is proof. Names. Financial records. Everything he gathered before they killed him."

Her expression hardened.

"But they’re still watching."

With trembling fingers, Rowe opened the envelope.

Inside were several handwritten pages, a flash drive, and a faded photograph of their mother, smiling with one hand resting protectively over her pregnant stomach.

Before she could read another line, Reaper’s voice snapped through the earpiece.

"Movement outside."

A beat passed.

"Disciples."

Another.

"Rowan... get out. Now."

Gunfire shattered the silence.

Bullets ripped through the walls, splintering old timber.

Raven overturned the table in one swift motion, drawing her pistol as Rowe dropped behind cover.

"They followed you!" Raven shouted.

"Or someone inside the club tipped them off!"

Rowe fired through the shattered window.

A figure collapsed into the darkness.

Outside, engines roared.

The Devil’s Disciples had come prepared.

Another attacker burst through the rear entrance.

Rowe reacted instinctively.

Two shots.

The man hit the floor.

Then another sound cut through the chaos.

Harleys.

Reaper.

His Road King thundered into the clearing, followed by Ghost and the rest of the Iron Reapers.

Gunfire erupted from every direction.

Rowe and Raven fought side by side, two sisters united by blood and survival for the very first time.

Reaper reached them moments later.

Without hesitation, he pulled Rowe behind him, shielding her as he returned fire.

"Fall back!" he ordered.

Ghost brought his bike alongside Raven.

"Move!"

Within seconds, the Reapers were tearing away from the crossroads in a cloud of dust and flying gravel.

Only once they were safely on the road did Rowe realize warm blood had soaked through the bandage on her side.

The wound had opened again.

By the time they reached the compound, Doc was already waiting.

The injury wasn’t serious, but it needed fresh stitches.

Reaper remained outside the treatment room until the last bandage was secured.

Only then did he step inside.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

He crossed the room and pulled her carefully into his arms.

The embrace said everything words couldn’t.

Relief.

Fear.

Love.

"I almost lost you," he whispered.

"You didn’t."

She rested her forehead against his.

"I’m still here."

He kissed her gently, lingering just long enough for the fear of the evening to begin slipping away.

Later, they sat together in the quiet room, the recovered envelope resting on the bedside table between them.

"I love you, Rowan," Reaper said softly.

His voice held no hesitation this time.

"We’re ending this."

"Together."

Rowe reached for his hand.

"I love you too."

Her eyes drifted toward the envelope.

"But tomorrow..."

She drew a slow breath.

"We find that safe."

He nodded once.

"Tomorrow."

Exhaustion finally claimed them.

Sometime after midnight, Reaper’s burner phone vibrated on the nightstand.

One anonymous message filled the screen.

Crossroads was only the beginning.

The safe holds the truth... and a target on your bloodline.

One week.

Reaper stared at the message in silence.

Beside him, Rowe felt a chill settle deep in her chest.

Someone always seemed to know their next move.

And with every answer they uncovered...

The danger only grew.
