Chapter 314: Chapter 215: Psychological Attack
While Paige Summers was in Central City gathering information and preparing to leave the city herself to rendezvous with Marcus Monroe and rescue Andy and Erin Quinn...
She never would have imagined that Outside Norgate, a major, completely unforeseen event had already taken place!
「Three days earlier, Outside Norgate.」
At that time, in the Central Army’s camp, soldiers were preparing for a new offensive!
The heavy rain, which had lasted for about ten days, had stopped several days ago. However, the ground remained waterlogged, leaving it covered in puddles and pits.
But they couldn’t wait any longer. Before the rain, the Northern Army had already been on the verge of collapse. If the downpour hadn’t saved them, the war might have been over by now! The rain had forced the Central Army to retreat, wasting precious days. Now, if they delayed further, their expeditionary force would likely face supply shortages. At that point, victory would be far from certain.
Army Commander Kiera Walsh and the other two division commanders understood this, as did Seth Howell.
That was why he had been in the camp for the past few days, helping formulate battle plans to take Norgate as quickly as possible. Consequently, it had been a while since he had gone to "check on" Nora Lowell.
He had, however, left her water and food, and had even let her down from the earthen wall. ’She’s still tied up, but you don’t need hands to eat. She can just lower her head...’ The thought of her eating and drinking off the ground like a dog brought a glint of twisted glee to Seth Howell’s eyes!
’Soon. Once this battle is over, I’ll make her understand exactly why she’s ended up in this state!’
"Is everything ready?"
Kiera Walsh’s question shattered his vile fantasy. Seth Howell immediately wiped any inappropriate emotion from his eyes and answered with respect and confidence, "Yes, Commander!"
"Very good." Kiera Walsh nodded. "Move out!"
"Yes, sir!"
Kiera Walsh watched as Seth Howell moved to a position at his back and side, a picture of loyalty and protection. He didn’t say anything more, but inwardly, he was extremely pleased.
’I, Kiera Walsh, must truly be favored by fate!’
’At my age, my wife has failed to give me a son or a daughter, and I had already given up hope. But who would have thought that a single night of recklessness in my youth would, completely unbeknownst to me, result in such a grown-up son!’
’And that’s not all—my son is also exceptionally talented. Not only is he a Sixth-rank Wind Ability User, but he also possesses all the finishing touches like good looks, a fine temperament, and a dignified bearing. He’s in no way inferior to the scions of the Noble Houses who have been groomed since birth!’
Every time he looked at him, Kiera Walsh couldn’t help but feel a pang of regret.
’The woman who could raise such an exceptional child in that kind of harsh environment must have been extraordinary. If I hadn’t just walked away after that one night, perhaps she would be my wife today. We might have even had more than one child...’
"Vanguard! Charge with me!"
A shout from the front lines snapped Kiera Walsh out of his daze. He shook his head, casting aside those pointless what-ifs and refocusing his attention on the battlefield.
The battle... had begun.
The base of Norgate’s twenty-meter-high wall was already mottled and crumbling. It was sturdy enough to withstand the physical attacks of Zombies or Mutant Beasts, but it was beginning to show signs of wear from the various human superpower attacks.
Facing the Central Army’s assault, Norgate couldn’t afford to just passively defend from behind its walls. The moment they spotted the enemy, they dispatched their own troops out of the city to engage.
Soon, the Central Army’s vanguard clashed with them.
Fire and water intertwined as the earth and stones of the battlefield were constantly churned up, forming barriers of earthen spikes. Amid flashes of multi-colored light, the fierce crack of gunfire mixed with the metallic clang of clashing blades.
Amid the slaughter, figures darted back and forth at high speed.
From embrasures in the middle section of the wall, artillery shells were fired in succession, aimed at the Central Army’s rear flank!
Superpowers, firearms, artillery, blades... if it could be used as a weapon, it was on that battlefield!
In this chaotic era, no one cared what weapons you used or what methods you employed. The only thing that mattered was the result.
Surviving!
The numbers on both sides were dwindling, but it was obvious that after the last period of fighting, the Northern Army’s forces were stretched thin.
But that didn’t mean the wall would be easily breached.
While one part of the Central Army engaged the Northern Army in a frontal assault, two other squads broke off, avoiding the main battle to attack the city walls directly from the sides.
It wasn’t very effective.
The closer they got to the wall, the more intense the defensive fire became. Not every Superpower User was fast enough to dodge bullets, and the hail of gunfire forced them to retreat out of range.
