Chapter 301: Chapter 205: Luring Zombies (Part 2)
Sean Raines could still handle the first two.
It took some effort, but at least he wasn’t injured.
But this last one...
He truly couldn’t understand how it did it!
This was reality, not some online game, okay?
Don’t pick on him for being too young to have played any before the apocalypse!
Not only could he not figure it out, he truly couldn’t handle it.
If he couldn’t beat it, he could only run.
And his escape was a pathetic one.
That seemingly ordinary Zombie was terrifyingly good at pinpointing his location.
He didn’t have Paige Summers’s speed, so he had to rely on talisman paper. Even after using several in a row and suppressing his aura to hide under a large, dust-covered piece of abandoned machinery, he had only barely managed to shake it for a short while.
Taking advantage of the moment, he quickly changed his clothes and sprinkled himself with a uniquely scented medicinal powder.
He could only hope this would be enough to keep the Zombie from finding him again.
The sky gradually darkened.
His refined corpses had long since been put away. Alone, Sean Raines’s heart was filled with desolation. ’Two days! If I still can’t shake this Zombie after all this, then I’m really out of options!’
Fortunately, Heaven never seals off all paths.
After all his efforts, the Zombie actually didn’t follow him.
Sean Raines let out a long sigh of relief. He didn’t move, simply sitting cross-legged under the machine to begin his Cultivation.
He had expended a great deal of energy this time, bordering on complete exhaustion. If he couldn’t recover properly, it would likely hinder his future progress. Thus, he meditated for two full days, only opening his eyes to gnaw on some dried meat when he could no longer bear the hunger.
He knew he couldn’t delay any longer.
’I have to find Paige Summers as soon as possible.’
’Whether or not she can immediately return to Central City for help, I at least have to tell them about that strange Zombie.’
’They’re clearing this area, so they’ll run into it sooner or later. This way, they can prepare in advance and reduce casualties!’
He wasn’t even a member of Bloodfall, yet he was so concerned about their survival. It was all because of Claire Chapman and Paige Summers.
’Those team members are actually quite endearing.’
’You can tell just by looking at Claire Chapman and Paige Summers. The people they pick are all pretty much the same.’
’Genuinely good-natured.’
’The apocalypse hasn’t made them deceitful or suspicious. They might be wary of outsiders, but once you’re considered one of their own, they don’t hesitate to show you their true heart!’
They had always treated him with a deep, heartfelt respect.
Perhaps it was because he looked out for them in battle, or perhaps it was because he had saved their captain.
In any case, during their time traveling together, they never once made him feel like an outsider.
For him, fitting into a team so naturally was something he had never experienced before.
He hadn’t thought much of it when he left.
But when he tried to hitch a ride back to Central City with a random team, he discovered that what used to be easy had now become incredibly difficult. Either the captain was unpleasant to listen to, or the team members’ expressions were just off-putting. In short, none of them even met his lowest standards.
It was only then that he understood.
’It’s because of Bloodfall.’
’I’ve been subconsciously comparing every team to Bloodfall.’
’The result... is that I steeled my resolve and decided to go back alone!’
And it was right around then that he received the Communication Talisman from his junior brother.
Sean Raines shook the thoughts from his mind, stood up, and patted the dust off his clothes. ’Today, I have to find them!’
But he was too late.
The Zombie that had been wandering around, avoiding Bloodfall’s clearing route, had failed in its pursuit of Sean Raines. Desperate to replenish its energy with other food, it had taken the initiative to seek out the Bloodfall team!
Its first target was Claire Chapman.
Clearly, it was a picky eater.
It wasn’t interested in anyone else on the team, setting its sights only on Claire Chapman.
All kinds of Zombies were constantly appearing by its side, their numbers growing from four to twelve. And by the looks of it, that number was still on the rise!
Claire Chapman cursed under her breath. ’Damn it, what kind of weird-ass power is this?! Is it trying to open a Zombie shop?!’
Although she had to face three of them by herself, she could still hold on. The problem was that her team members were finding it increasingly difficult.
Sweetie had just been sent out to contact Paige Summers.
But Paige was on another route; there was no way she could get here this quickly!
Cries of pain rang out continuously. Though suppressed, Claire Chapman could still hear them.
She knew another team member had been injured!
’Dammit!’
She forced herself to remain calm, but her movements were still tinged with frustration.
The cicada-wing-thin Flying Knives whirled among the Zombies like flashes of light and shadow, but they didn’t always inflict maximum damage.
These Zombies were clearly smarter than any they had encountered before.
They knew how to protect their greatest weak spots: the neck and everything above it.
The Flying Knives might sever their fingers, or even their arms, but they couldn’t kill them instantly!
As long as they weren’t completely taken down, these Zombies would not stop their voracious charge.
And they still had their sharp teeth.
Using their speed or powerful bodies, even resorting to tearing at flesh like animals—for them, the method didn’t matter as long as they could get that flesh into their mouths!
Sweat was already beading on Claire Chapman’s forehead.
This was the greatest crisis she had faced to date.
Even when she first encountered Paige Summers and her group, when the two sides were in opposition, there was still room for maneuvering as long as the opponents were human and capable of communication.
But the Zombies before her were different.
When facing an opponent that only wants to kill you, the only thing you can do is shut up and kill it first!
Claire Chapman rolled, evading a pincer attack from two Zombies, and sent a Flying Knife plunging straight down into the skull of one of them.
Because Paige Summers’s knives were hard and sharp enough, she had now developed a new move.
Plunge the knife into a Zombie’s head, then twist.
As long as the connection between the Crystal Core and the skull was severed, the Zombie would die even if the knife wasn’t immediately removed!
It didn’t work every time, though.
But against these Zombies, who guarded their necks so carefully, it still served as a surprise attack.
Still, the pressure was immense!
Just then, a clear bird cry echoed from the sky.
The sound reached Claire Chapman’s ears, and her spirits lifted. The breath she’d been holding in her throat was finally released.
That was Sweetie’s call.
Reinforcements had arrived!
