Chapter 218: Chapter 218 The national grain reserve.
Soon, the group organized themselves and prepared to depart, having successfully cleared the main monster tide the previous day.
The journey to the national grain reserve was a long journey filled with countless battles against wandering monsters but soon the trucks carrying soldiers from the different survivor bases finally arrived at the National Grain Reserve.
The place they stayed over night was just a hour journey to the warehouse hence they could arrive on time.
The moment they reached the National Grain Reserve, everyone who were chatting among themselves, happy on defeating monsters soon kept quiet while the trunk came a stop.
The entire surrounding was eerily silent, as not even a single growl, screech could be heard.
It was as silent as a graveyard.
"Are we still in the apocalypse?" Darren murmured to himself as he swallowed hard.
Shattered windows, collapsed walls, scattered debris was on the ground which made it obvious that monsters had once rampaged through the place.
One of the base leaders folded his arms across his chest before letting out a scoff.
"I thought this warehouse was supposed to be extremely dangerous. That’s the whole reason we decided to work together in the first place."
"You can never be too sure," another base leader replied calmly. "So keep your voice down."
The first base leader immediately fell silent. After all..the other man was right.
Just because they couldn’t see any monsters didn’t mean there weren’t any.
"Come here." Antelope called while one of his subordinates stepped forward at his call alongside another soldier.
The two men carefully brought out what looked like a compact flying reconnaissance drone.
Unlike ordinary drones that produced a constant buzzing sound, this one was specially designed for stealth. The machine rose silently into the air before gliding through one of the broken windows and disappearing into the warehouse.
No one asked any questions.
Although curiosity filled their eyes, they knew Antelope would explain everything once the reconnaissance was complete.
Several minutes later...the drone silently flew back out of the warehouse and landed smoothly in Antelope’s waiting hand.
He checked the footage displayed on the screen for a few moments before turning to face everyone.
"There are ten storage rooms inside this warehouse," Antelope reported seriously. "However, only two of them still contain grain."
He paused briefly before continuing.
"Each room contains approximately five thousand sacks of grain." His words immediately caused everyone’s eyes to brighten. "That means there are roughly ten thousand bags of grain still left inside."
A wave of excitement swept through the crowd.
Ten thousand bags!!! That was enough food to feed countless survivors for a very long time.
Before anyone else could speak, Erick stepped forward.
"Captain Ivy can take two hundred bags of grain," he announced without hesitation. "The remaining grain is more than enough for everyone else. Besides..." A faint smile appeared on his face. "I’ll also give her part of my own share."
The atmosphere instantly became tense.
Every base leader and many of the soldiers turned toward Erick with expressions filled with annoyance.
"Damn..." One of the base leaders muttered under his breath, glaring at Ivy from afar. "We haven’t even entered the warehouse yet, and he’s already giving her two hundred bags."
His companion clicked his tongue in irritation. "She’s nothing but a freeloader. Fine! I know that commander Erick and Commander Antelope will be getting more resources than the other group leaders since they’re the one that brought this information but then two hundred bags from commander Erick resources to this woman?! That’s crazy!"
Another leader sneered.
"This is exactly why women should never be leaders. She’s contributed absolutely nothing. I seriously can’t stand people like her. It’s so damn annoying."
Although they deliberately kept their voices low, both Ivy and Erick heard every single word.
Their enhanced hearing abilities made sure of that.
However...neither of them reacted. Since those people lacked the courage to say those words directly to their faces, there was no point wasting time responding.
Antelope clapped his hands once, immediately drawing everyone’s attention.
"Let’s head inside." His gaze swept across the gathering. "My reconnaissance drone didn’t detect any monsters inside but we all know how cunning monsters are so don’t let your guard down simply because the warehouse appears empty."
His sharp eyes scanned everyone once more. "Entering this warehouse does not mean it’s monster-free. Remain vigilant at all times."
"I’ll repeat it again...Those monsters can appear from anywhere."
"Yes, sir!" the other base leaders answered in unison.
Antelope nodded in satisfaction before continuing.
"We’ll divide ourselves into groups. Some people will carry the grain out of the warehouse while others will remain outside and load the sacks onto the trucks."
"We have a total of ten thousand bags of grain to transport." He glanced at the crowd. "There aren’t even one hundred of us here so that means cooperation is absolutely necessary."
"Understood?"
"Yes!" everyone shouted together.
Without wasting another second, Antelope took the lead and walked into the warehouse while the others quickly followed behind him.
The interior was just as silent as the outside as broken shelves lay scattered across the floor. Large pools of dried blood stained the concrete walls as well as deep claw marks carved through steel support beams.
The overwhelming silence only made the horrifying evidence left behind by the monsters even more unsettling. There was no doubt that brutal battles had once taken place here.
Without wasting any more time, everyone immediately began the task they had come for.
