Chapter 40: Send the Guards away

April spoke with Xavier on Samuel’s phone to let him know that this was a non-negotiable operation if he wanted to have ties with Alexander Greels who would take over the Greels Empire.

Surely, that was more than enough to move a business tycoon.

Soon after, the door clicked open, and Marcus, the burly guard, walked back into the room after locking the panicked Dr. Evans away in the downstairs security office.

April’s eyes flicked to him, then back to Alexander. They needed to clear out the immediate staff before Xavier’s private team arrived to avoid any leaks or unnecessary witnesses.

"Mr. Greels," April said, her tone suddenly shifting into one of casual, pampered indulgence. She leaned back slightly, tapping her chin. "I’m suddenly craving that gold-leaf matcha tart from Belle’s Pâtisserie. It’s on the other side of town, but I really want to have it right now."

In her mind, she let out a small breath of relief that she had pronounced the name correctly.

Just five minutes ago, after making plans with Xavier, she had been thinking of how they could get the guards away so that if they were potentially spies, they wouldn’t get wind of their activity.

So, she asked Samuel for the name of the most expensive, inconveniently located pastry shop outside the city center. One that may take long to place an order, preferably.

Though she was smarter now, she couldn’t exactly magically know the places she had never been to before just because it fits her character. There was still so much she didn’t know, though she wasn’t planning to learn all of them.

They would all turn to naught when the apocalypse came anyway.

Still, deep down, after hearing Samuel mention the name, she was genuinely curious to know how a gold-leaf matcha tart actually tasted.

Hearing April mention she was craving the pastries, Alexander nodded, understanding the sharp, meaningful glint in her eyes. He cleared his throat, quickly playing along.

"Marcus," Alexander commanded, turning to the guard. "Take the other guy waiting by the SUV downstairs and go pick up that dessert for Miss April."

Marcus hesitated, looking between the two of them with a furrowed brow. "Sir, with the current situation and the doctor being compromised, we shouldn’t leave you unguarded up here. What if your uncle—"

"I’ll be staying right here in the room with the doors locked," Alexander interrupted smoothly, his voice leaving no room for argument. "No one can get past the biometric scanner without my clearance anyway. Go. And don’t come back until you have it."

"Understood, sir. We will be back as quickly as possible," Marcus promised. He bowed his head and quickly exited the suite to retrieve his partner downstairs, determined to complete the errand rapidly so they could return to their post.

The moment the doors closed behind the guards, the suite fell into a quiet, anticipatory silence.

"They’re gone," Alexander muttered, running a hand through his blonde hair. "Now we just have to wait for Xavier Reed, right?"

April nodded. "That’s right."

Though, she checked the time on her titanium phone. It was almost past twelve and she hadn’t stocked up on any supplies for the day.

Working was so burdensome, but at least she was raking in thick cash with her work.

Once she was done with this, she would go get her supplies and then later watch Samuel as he goes through a gruelling heartbreak.

She just hoped nothing more would come up.

They didn’t have to wait too long after the guards were gone. Xavier Reed’s executive response team had arrived and Samuel had to go down with Alexander’s keycard to open up for them.

Less than fifteen minutes later, the service elevator doors opened once more.

Xavier Reed walked into the penthouse suite.

He looked absolutely immaculate, wearing a pristine slate-gray tailored suit that radiated immense corporate authority. His sharp, dark eyes immediately swept the room, taking in the state of the comatose chairman before locking onto April, who gave him a small, knowing wave from her seat.

Directly behind Xavier stood his specialized medical team. They were dressed in sterile, unmarked black scrubs, moving with the quiet, synchronized precision of military operatives rather than standard hospital staff.

They carried compact, high-end mobile life-support equipment and a specialized concealment gurney.

Xavier stepped forward, his physical presence instantly commanding the room. He turned toward the young heir, extending a hand.

"Alexander Greels?" Xavier said, his deep baritone even and grounding. "Samuel filled me in on the logistics. My team is ready to execute the transfer."

Alexander stepped forward and shook Xavier’s hand, his grip firm despite the lingering adrenaline in his veins. "Mr. Reed. I appreciate you coming personally. My family’s current situation is entirely unstable so I’ll be counting on you. If my uncle realizes what we’re doing..."

"He won’t," Xavier cut him off flatly, a cold, unyielding confidence in his eyes.

He flicked his gaze toward his medical operatives, who immediately began disconnecting the old chairman from the hospital’s stationary units and transferring him to the secure, independent mobile lifelines.

"My private facility is completely off the grid. No one outside of this room will ever find him there." Xavier stated.

Alexander nodded. That was exactly the kind of unyielding reassurance he needed to hear from a tycoon of Xavier Reed’s caliber.

As the specialized medical team moved around the bed like clockwork, seamlessly transferring the old chairman to the mobile lifelines without triggering a single system alarm, April quietly slipped her phone into her purse.

She yawned lightly, stretching her arms above her head with complete indifference to the high-stakes atmosphere dominating the room.

"I guess I can leave you two to it," she said, smoothing down her dress as she slid off her leather seat. "Like I said before, I have a very busy schedule."

Xavier turned his head toward her, his dark eyes fixing onto her calm form. "Miss April," he called out.

April paused, waiting for him to finish his thought, but Xavier simply held her gaze for a long moment. No words came. Instead, he just gave her a slow respectful nod.

When she had mentioned that morning that he and Alexander Greels would be seeing each other often, he had never imagined ’soon’ would mean less than twelve hours later.

He had dropped a high-level corporate briefing without a single regret the moment Samuel detailed her instructions.

He looked from her back to the blonde heir, his posture unyielding. "I’ll see to it that I assist Alexander Greels to the best of my abilities."

"Yes, I expect no less from you, Mr. Reed," April replied.
