Chapter 39: Don’t trust anyone—I’m your guardian angel

"Don’t just think of securing the building, Alexander," April explained, her tone smooth and entirely unhurried. "Your uncle is desperate. If he realizes this floor is locked down, he might end up blowing up the whole building if he needs to. What you actually need to do is get your grandfather out of this building entirely and plant a dummy in that bed."

Alexander blinked again, the sheer scale of her strategic thinking hitting him. "That... makes a lot of sense."

"And don’t trust anyone, Alexander." She looked at his phone which he was about to use to call his security team. "Anyone could be your uncle’s eyes and ears," she said in a small, low voice, briefly looking around the empty, quiet room.

The burly guard hadn’t returned from locking up the doctor yet. She wasn’t explicitly asking him to suspect his own personal guards, but he simply needed to be on guard against everything.

"This operation needs to be carried out by someone who isn’t involved with your family at all."

Alexander swallowed hard, the weight of his isolation pressing down on him. He looked at her, his throat tight. "Miss April, you said not to trust anyone..." He gulped again, his blue eyes searching her calm face. "Then does that mean I shouldn’t trust you, too?"

April burst into a light, amused laugh. "Oh no, dear. I’m your guardian angel," she boldly claimed, her lips curving into a delighted smirk. "But I’ll stop being your guardian angel if you stop paying me. So be sure not to trust me once that happens."

The blunt explanation made him feel a bit uneasy, a sudden chill settling in his stomach. "Then... if my uncle offers you more than I could possibly offer, will you...?"

She shook her head before he could even finish the desperate question.

"I have a business code, you see," April said, waving her hand casually. "I’m not into helping my client’s rival. So once you’ve secured me as your seer, congratulations—we’re stuck together until your bank runs dry." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

Alexander let out a short, sudden laugh. It was a bizarre thing to hear, but coming from her, it sounded strangely reassuring. The knot of panic in his chest actually loosened a bit. He was genuinely glad to hear she had a code.

Then, he looked down at his phone, his thumb hovering over the screen as a new problem arose. "But who can I even ask to help me with this? If I can’t trust anyone in my contact list, how am I supposed to move him secretly?"

April pondered the dilemma for a brief second before her eyes drifted toward the doorway, landing on the immaculate figure of Xavier Reed’s chief assistant.

"Hey, Samuel," she called out casually. "Mr. Reed has a specialized medical team, right?"

Samuel stepped into the room, adjusting his glasses with perfect composure. "Yes, Miss April. Reed Industries maintains a private, highly classified medical transport and emergency trauma team for executive security."

"Excellent," April said, turning back to face the room. "Then contact Mr. Reed. Let him know where we are and tell him he needs to be here right away. He can drop whatever high-level briefing he’s on right now, because it won’t benefit him as much as this."

Alexander’s brows furrowed deeply, his confusion returning in full force. "What are you planning by involving Xavier Reed? Why are we bringing Reed Industries into my family’s succession crisis?"

"It’s good you know Xavier Reed then, because he’s going to keep your grandfather in a safe place," April replied, her voice smooth and brimming with certainty. "And the reason why I’m involving the Reed Industries into this is because they have a medical team where absolutely no one in the Greels family is connected to. Your grandfather can stay there, completely hidden, and be treated by an outside medical team to flush out the poison until he wakes up tomorrow morning."

She envisioned the uncle’s corrupt security team bursting into the penthouse tonight, only to drag away a lifeless bundle of blankets. A wicked, highly entertained snicker escaped her lips.

"Your uncle is going to be mad with rage once he discovers he can’t find your grandfather anywhere, and that his men carried out a dummy," she whispered, her eyes dancing with sheer malice. "It’s going to be a show worth watching."

Alexander thought about it for a few seconds. The logic was completely airtight. By bringing in Xavier Reed, he wasn’t just securing a safe house; he was erecting a massive, unbreakable wall between his helpless grandfather and his uncle’s desperate thugs.

He nodded heavily, completely deciding to trust April’s judgment, and agreed to the plan.

April nodded back, her eyes drifting toward the fragile old man lying on the bed. She had intentionally skipped mentioning the hidden truth segment of the system’s reading to Alexander, and for a brief moment, she asked herself why.

Her gaze lingered on the glowing blue text still floating silently in the air right above the comatose chairman.

[Hidden Truth — Target: Robert Greels]

Regret Indicator: Target is experiencing deep, subconscious grief and regret for falling so easily into the treacherous tricks of his own son, Harvey.

Core Desire: Target suffers from intense anxiety over his inability to protect his grandson, Alexander, whom he loves deeply. He subconsciously wishes he could do anything to turn back time and rewrite his mistakes.

April let out a very soft, quiet sigh.

’You don’t need to worry about turning back time, old man,’ she thought to herself, a rare flash of genuine determination grounding her thoughts. ’The past is a nightmare anyway. I’ll personally make sure you wake up tomorrow morning so you don’t have to die with those pathetic regrets.’

Then, looking back at the massive hundred-million-dollar check resting securely in her spatial dimension, her eyes crinkled at the corners. The softer thoughts instantly vanished, replaced by her signature, unbothered greed.

’And then, once you’re fully awake and realizing your grandson is safe... I’ll milk your family commerce account completely dry. Hehe.’

Samuel, standing by the doorway, already had his phone to his ear, calmly relaying the precise instructions and coordinates to Xavier Reed.

The pieces on the board were moving exactly how April wanted them to, and the grand pre-apocalypse show was officially underway.
