Chapter 126: Animal Egos Clash
Alexander cleared his throat roughly, his voice dropping into a hushed, embarrassed whisper. "Yes. I’ve started seeing a private consultant. And... I’ve actually started noticing some positive changes since I’ve been more relaxed recently. You don’t have to worry about it."
"And why exactly would I worry?" April asked flatly, stopping right in front of the back seat door.
Before she could slide inside, Alexander stepped directly into her personal space. He raised his arm, dropping his hand flat onto the roof of the car, subtly trapping her between his frame and the vehicle door.
April didn’t perceive the sudden movement as being trapped at all. She simply stood her ground, blinking up at him with a calm, curious gaze, wondering what exactly he wanted to say with such an intense, serious look in his eyes.
But the words only jumbled themselves in Alexander’s head. It spun round and round, and in the end, was reduced to nothing but a puff of air.
"Just... get back safely," Alexander said quietly, his gaze lingering on her face for a second longer before he stepped back and opened the door fully for her.
She gave a small nod and climbed into the rear seat, not thinking much of his intense behavior just now. As she settled the basket onto her lap, Alexander leaned his forearms against the open window frame, a familiar, boyish grin returning to his face.
"I’m gonna come over to the Reed estate a lot from now on," he warned, his eyes gleaming. "I really want to get into that Winecraft game you’re always playing. I’m also gonna pester you a lot to keep teaching me survival mechanics."
"Please don’t," April stated with a completely blank, deadpan gaze.
Alexander burst into a sudden, loud laugh, tapping the side of the car with his hand as he leaned back. "Man, that look just makes me want to pester you even more. Your Jeep should be delivered to Xavier Reed’s mansion by the time you get back. Bye, Miss Seer."
An arrogant, familiar smirk plastered itself across his lips as he stepped away, waving a hand as the vehicle began rolling down the long gravel driveway.
April looked down at the closed wicker basket on her lap, letting out a quiet, slow sigh.
"That’s that for now," she whispered to herself, turning her gaze out the window as the landscape blurred past.
Driving... It had been incredibly difficult and stressful at first, but she had actually had a lot of fun with it. She would definitely make time to try it more once she got back to the fortress.
Though, she guessed now she would have to stock up on fuel. I’ll get to that after taking a look at the bunker. She thought to herself. For now... she took out her phone and began to play her game.
Half an hour later, the vehicle smoothly brought April back to the grand stone courtyard of the Reed estate.
She stepped out into the cool afternoon air, carrying the wicker basket carefully by the handle as she marched through the massive front doors.
The grand villa was entirely quiet. Xavier wasn’t present in the main hall, and neither was Samuel. They were both likely buried deep under the logistics of the construction down at the bunker site.
But the exact moment April’s loafers stepped over the threshold into the primary dining area, a deep, violently angry growl rumbled out from the very back of her dog’s throat.
Rufus was standing rigid near the edge of the long dinner table, his silver-and-black fur standing completely on end.
Even before April could place the wicker basket down, or pop the latch to let the kitten out, the majestic divine beast had already sensed the absolute friction of an enemy entering his space.
"Easy, Rufus. There’s no danger," April said, her voice dropping into its usual flat tone.
But Rufus didn’t stand down. He let out a booming bark that echoed off the high decorative ceilings of the dining hall, the sudden volume startling April enough to make her blink thrice.
Right on cue, a furious, muffled scratching sounded from inside the wicker basket, followed immediately by a sharp, piercing hiss.
My goodness. April placed a hand over her forehead, staring blankly at the vibrating container. Why did no one tell me that cats and dogs do not coexist? I mean, I did have a clue about it but was it this bad?
It’s not like she wouldn’t have accepted the cat had she known anyway, but still...
The moment she stepped closer to the long dinner table, the noise doubled. Rufus was baring his massive teeth, letting out a low, vibrating growl that shook his broad chest, while the kitten inside the box was snarling and spitting like a possessed puffball.
Both mythical entities were violently trying to assert dominance over the household, and the sheer chaotic friction was rapidly getting on April’s nerves.
"Will you two quit it?" April declared, finally snapping at them. "I am the master here, and I say you two are going to coexist whether you like it or not!"
For half a second, the sudden command actually worked. The two beasts went completely quiet. Rufus lowered his snout, blinking his golden eyes in surprise, and the scratching inside the basket stopped.
But the peace didn’t last three seconds.
The white kitten suddenly went wild inside the enclosure, throwing its body against the wicker walls as if trying to fiercely scream that April hadn’t earned the right to call herself its master yet.
Hearing the tiny intruder’s blatant disrespect, Rufus took it personally. He began barking aggressively at the basket, his deep, thundering voice demanding how dare a mere white furball go against his master’s decree.
April let out a slow breath, realizing that trying to reason with mythical animal egos was a complete waste of time.
With a detached expression, she simply set the vibrating basket directly onto the polished wood table, pulled out a high-backed dining chair, and sat down comfortably.
She rested her chin on her hand, leaving the two of them to aggressively argue it out in their own raw animal language.
The basket was hopping, the dog was pacing and snapping his jaws, and the transparent blue system box was silently flashing notifications in the corner of her vision about aura clashing.
My house is going to be incredibly loud from now on, she thought with a silent, heavy sigh, completely tuning out the noise as she pulled her smartphone from her handbag to check on her Winecraft iron reserves.
She was definitely going to need to buy an immense bulk order of reinforced furniture covers before the world ended because she didn’t trust these two to keep the peace when they were at each other’s throat like this.
It was chaos.
