Chapter 120: Secure your safehouse first
Xavier looked up at her, a faint, incredibly subtle glint of amusement passing through his dark eyes at her mechanical terminology.
"Thank you for those words, Miss April." He said.
The heavy, awkward wall that had been building between them since the previous day seemed to have completely vanished, replaced by a quiet, iron-clad mutual understanding.
"And perhaps you are right," Xavier agreed, picking up his documents and neatly tapping them against the desk to realign the edges. "The layout for the new mountain bunker requires absolute, unyielding focus. I cannot afford to look backward."
"Exactly," April nodded, gesturing down to Rufus, who had remained sitting perfectly still by the desk, his golden eyes watching the tycoon with an intelligent, calm gravity. "Secure your safehouse first, Mr. Reed. The rest of the world can be dealt with after the dust settles."
Xavier offered a slow, genuine nod of respect. "Thank you, Miss April." He was a bit ashamed that he broke down and had to hear those comforting words from another before he could get his act together. But that is what makes her extraordinary, right?
She is not bridled by these human emotions but she is also not entirely detached from them, knowing how one feels despite no words being said.
"By the way, Samuel said to inform you that your online delivery arrived already, but they are currently in the back yard." He said. "You can take a look at them tomorrow."
"Oh, right. The delivery." She nodded. "You should really give that man a raise for all his trouble. He’s way too talented."
"I know," Xavier said, a little smile curling at his lips. For a moment, he said nothing else, just staring at the blank documents while April stroked Rufus’ head. And then, he stood up, lifting his gaze to look at her. "Thank you once again, Miss April. I will not keep you any longer from your dinner."
"Alright then," she said and stood straight. She stuck around thinking he may still need that reading but he didn’t after all. It had all been a cover for his distraught mind. "Goodnight, Mr. Reed."
April turned and marched toward the kitchen, Rufus padding silently right behind her heels.
I don’t need to worry about the current rank of my eye of destiny. Once I start operating in the black market, I’ll perform more readings. That way, if I make five readings a day, and the system is set to increase the rank every ten readings, I’ll be able to increase the rank to rank three.
The kitchen staff were still there, definitely waiting for her so they could get ready to dish out her dinner. As soon as they saw her at the door, they bowed and immediately began the preparations for serving.
That is, unless there is a different condition for increasing the rank to rank three.
She turned around and went back to the dining table. Xavier was gone, so she took a comfortable seat at the head of the table.
Well, she laid on her bed, staring at the ceiling. I’ll find that out soon.
The next morning, the sun broke over the mountain valley, casting a bright, clear amber light through the glass windows of her suite.
April sat up in bed, her body feeling completely light and refreshed as she stretched her limbs high above her head with a yawn.
She swung her legs out of bed, her feet falling onto the soft rug on the floor before finding her slippers.
She got up, heading to the bathroom as she tied her brown hair back into a loose ponytail.
Woof! Rufus made sure she knew he was awake as well, his large ears perking up as his silver-and-black coat caught the morning light.
She turned her head to him.
"Good morning, Rufus. Did you sleep well?" She asked and it gave yet another excited bark, wagging its tail as it followed her into the bathroom. "Today, you’re going to stay at home again cause I have somewhere to be," she said and the dog did not seem to have an issue with it despite understanding what she said.
He had fun staying at home anyway. The maids fed him a lot. They even pet him, stroking his fur and rubbing his belly. And he could sleep whenever.
There was no way he would hate staying home.
A genuine smile broke across April’s face, as if she could hear the dog’s thoughts about loving the idea of staying home.
"Really now, that makes two of us." She said as she picked up her toothbrush.
Soon, April stepped out of the steaming bathroom, a fresh wave of clarity settling over her features.
Today, she opted for more relaxed clothing. She slid into a dark blouse dress that fell neatly to her knees, pairing it with comfortable leather loafers. Slinging a simple, long-strapped handbag over her shoulder, she checked her reflection one last time, sliding a loose strand of her hair behind her ear.
She looked light, unassuming, and entirely prepared for a casual day. She was just going to get the gift and then come back. Play more games and then sleep some more.
Downstairs, the dining hall smelled of freshly brewed coffee and toasted bread. Xavier and Samuel were already standing near the edge of the mahogany table, reviewing a thick stack of construction blueprints.
The heavy, suffocating awkwardness from the previous night was no longer there, and in its place was a smooth, unspoken understanding.
Xavier looked remarkably refreshed, his posture perfectly aligned and his eyes sharp.
"Good morning, Miss April," Xavier greeted, offering a polite, genuine nod of respect.
"Good morning, Mr. Reed. Samuel," April replied, walking toward the layout. "I will be heading out for a while. Alexander Greels has sent a transport to convey me to his family estate."
Samuel paused, his pen hovering over his notepad. "Do you have urgent business with the Greels’ heir, Miss April?"
"Well, Alexander has procured a gratitude offering on behalf of his grandfather," April explained flatly, helping herself to a small piece of toast. "I am heading out to claim it."
Xavier and Samuel exchanged a brief, curious look.
"A gift?" Xavier questioned, his dark brow arching slightly. "Did he specify the exact classification of the item?"
"No. He did not. But I am fine with it," April murmured. "I will discover the details upon arrival."
Samuel lowered his head at a flawless angle, an expression of profound professional apology crossing his face. "I must offer my deepest regrets, Miss April. I am completely bound to Mr. Reed’s schedules today as well to finalize the primary structural reinforcements for the new safehouse. I will be unable to operate as your direct escort."
"Do not worry about it, Samuel. Focus entirely on your work with Mr. Reed," April reassured him with a slight wave of her hand. "My schedule today is not demanding in the slightest."
