Chapter 350: Chapter 350: Pressing On
At first, Stella Sterling wasn’t deeply asleep. Though her eyes were closed, she was paying close attention to the movements around her.
’I want to see if this Andrew Shaw will try anything when my guard is down.’
After all, he was staying by her side because she had forced him to, not because he was doing so willingly.
’If he gets a chance, he might try to escape. Or maybe he’ll try to attack me, take everything in this car, and go off to live freely on his own.’
In this apocalypse, anything could happen. Even though they had an agreement, nothing was stopping him from backing out at the last minute.
’After all, being under someone else’s thumb is never as good as being free and on your own.’
Especially since, to him, she was a dangerous presence who knew all his secrets.
She needed to see what kind of decision he would make. That decision would, in turn, determine her future attitude toward him.
Not that Stella Sterling was afraid of him doing anything to her. Even if she were sound asleep and he tried to kill her, she wouldn’t be worried in the slightest. She had already fed him a Loyal Servant Pill. If he even thought about harming her, his own body would stop him and inflict a certain punishment.
But she didn’t quite trust him, so she just wanted to run a little test.
If he behaved himself, she wasn’t an unreasonable person. She would treat him well in the future. After all, he could provide her with a lot of useful information, so she didn’t mind being a little more pleasant toward him.
But if he harbored other intentions, Stella Sterling wouldn’t hesitate to give him a little punishment to make him behave.
For now, however, his reaction was rather satisfactory to her.
Once she was sure Andrew Shaw was truly asleep, Stella Sterling opened her eyes, glanced at him, and then slowly drifted off to sleep herself.
When she woke up, it was already late evening. The sky had gone completely dark. Stella Sterling cracked a window just a little to feel the temperature outside.
As expected, even though it was well into the evening, the temperature hadn’t dropped much.
During the day a while back, she had measured the temperature at nearly 60 degrees. She hadn’t measured it in the last few days, but she could clearly feel that it had gotten even hotter.
She felt that besides some differences in timing, there were other discrepancies between this life and her past one. Namely, the natural disasters were more severe this time around.
Take the temperature, for instance. It seemed higher than in her last life. It was already this high right at the beginning, and from what she knew, it would continue to climb.
Just how high it would eventually go was something no one could predict.
Even with the air conditioning running constantly in the car, she could still feel the oppressive heat, which was extremely uncomfortable.
She sighed, pushing those thoughts aside. From her dimensional space, she took out some refreshing, appetizing food, a container of boneless chicken feet, and a glass of iced cola.
She began to eat her dinner for the day.
After finishing her meal, she polished off another container of boneless chicken feet and took a sip of her ice-cold cola.
The single sip instantly made her feel much more comfortable, an unparalleled sense of satisfaction washing over her.
She set the rest of the cola aside, ready for a sip at any moment, then started the car and began to drive.
The road conditions were even worse than she had anticipated, severely affecting her travel speed.
This put her on a tighter schedule. Her original plan had been to wait until it was fully night, when it wasn’t as hot, before driving.
But now? In order to make up for lost time, she had no choice but to start early.
Stella Sterling continued to drive. Beside her, she had also prepared a dinner for Andrew Shaw.
So far, the man’s behavior had been very satisfactory, so Stella Sterling decided to treat him a little better.
In any case, he was the second "anomaly," besides herself, in this world.
In the middle of the night, Andrew Shaw was jolted awake by a series of bumps.
He shot upright, his eyes flying open. It took him a moment to realize what was happening.
’I’m her partner now. I’m in her car.’
Seeing the scenery flash past the window, he gripped the seat, his face a little pale. He asked in surprise, "Why are we going so fast? Are we in some kind of trouble? Is there danger?"
Before, the woman had driven very steadily. Besides, with the previous road conditions, it was impossible to go fast even if she wanted to.
But now, waking up, he felt like the car was flying.
The scenery outside had become a blurry streak, gone from his sight before he could even get a clear look.
The car was moving so fast that he felt unsteady. He hurriedly fumbled for the seatbelt in the back and buckled himself in.
Still, the speed sent a tremor of fear through his heart.
"No."
Stella Sterling, in the front seat, gave a simple reply to his question. Her face was a mask of excitement.
It was a cathartic kind of madness.
There wasn’t any danger. She had simply seen that the current stretch of road was much better—or at least not damaged—so she sped up.
This crazy feeling was just so stimulating. Besides, the roads weren’t like they used to be, with so many other cars. Now, you could go a long time without seeing another vehicle. It was the perfect opportunity for her to let loose.
Such opportunities were rare, and Stella Sterling wasn’t about to let it pass. In this apocalypse, being conventional and following the rules all day could also drive a person mad.
She needed an occasional bit of excitement to soothe that wild nerve of hers.
Her face was flush with excitement, but she wasn’t gambling with her own safety. She kept the speed within a range she could fully control.
Moreover, her spiritual power was highly focused, constantly monitoring her surroundings.
This way, she could detect any sudden danger at the earliest possible moment.
With her current abilities, if she concentrated her mind, not even the slightest change in her surroundings could escape her notice.
So she wasn’t at all worried about any consequences her recklessness might bring.
After all, her reason was still intact; she wouldn’t joke around with her own life.
But Andrew Shaw, sitting behind her, didn’t know any of this. Seeing this scene unfold, he was terrified.
In truth, the speed the woman was driving at wouldn’t have been considered anything special before the apocalypse; it was just a little faster than normal.
But this was the apocalypse! The roads had suffered brutal devastation. They were no longer intact, and poor conditions were everywhere.
For her to be driving like this... wasn’t she just asking for trouble?
It was simply far too dangerous.
