Chapter 341: Chapter 341: Doubt and Change
Of course, she hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
If it did, then he couldn’t blame her for being ruthless.
At that point, she’d just feed him Honest Pills around the clock. She wouldn’t have to worry about prying information from his lips, nor would she have to worry about him lying to her.
But then the man would lose his own consciousness, spending his days in a daze, answering whatever she asked. He’d be no different from a living corpse.
So, she hoped he’d be sensible, smart, and stay in line. It would be best if he didn’t even think about trying to deceive her.
Otherwise, he would be the only one to suffer the consequences.
Andrew Shaw wasn’t surprised to hear this. Right now, his greatest value lay in the information he had about the apocalypse.
The fact that she was so upfront about it actually put him at ease.
At least he knew exactly what she wanted, which was far better than being completely in the dark.
He asked, "What do you want to know? Just ask, and I’ll tell you everything."
He looked at Stella Sterling with a sincere expression.
Stella Sterling looked back at him. "I want to know everything. Everything you know."
"What other natural disasters happened after this? In the year you died, how far had human technology advanced? What progress was made to cope with the apocalypse?"
Stella Sterling asked, one question after another.
Andrew Shaw was inwardly shocked as he listened.
He knew she wanted to know about the future in advance to take precautions and prepare.
’But she’s just one person. Even if she knew all that, what could she possibly change?’
In the end, though, he didn’t voice any of his doubts. He just laughed heartily. "Oh, so that’s what this is about! You should have just said so!"
"If you had told me earlier that all I had to do was talk to get food and water, I wouldn’t have hidden a thing. I’d tell you everything!"
He grinned, his eyes crinkling. ’Isn’t this all just to survive?’
’If this woman really has the power to protect me, what does it matter if she knows?’
In response to his words, Stella Sterling simply smiled at him, her expression still full of suspicion.
’She would judge for herself whether this man was reliable or not.’
She looked at him. "Then start by telling me this: How much longer will this extreme heat last? And after that, what new disaster will come?"
At this, Stella Sterling paused, then gave him a warning look. "Take your time. Think it over carefully before you speak."
"Don’t lie to me. Otherwise, you won’t be able to handle the consequences."
She was warning him, but also giving him a reminder.
He’d better not lie, or his fate would be miserable, and she would know the instant he did.
Seeing her expression, Andrew Shaw’s heart trembled.
He had indeed been harboring other plans, but for some reason, after seeing the look in her eyes...
A powerful intuition told him to tell the truth—to not even think about deceiving the woman before him.
Otherwise, just as she had said, his end would be a miserable one.
At that moment, it suddenly hit him. ’This is not a woman you can lie to.’
’She has those strange pills. If I take one, I won’t be able to hide a thing and will confess everything to her.’
’If I lie now, and later she forces me to take that pill and asks these same questions...’
’She’ll know if I’ve lied to her just by asking. Once she finds out, the consequences... ’
At this thought, Andrew Shaw shivered violently.
In that moment, he actually felt a little grateful to her for giving him this chance.
He knew she was reminding him.
If not for her reminder, he would have lied.
A wave of fear washed over him, and he lowered his head. "Thank you."
Of all the things he had said so far, this "thank you" was the most sincere.
Stella Sterling looked at him. "Speak."
’I’ve already given him a chance, and a very obvious reminder at that,’ she thought. ’If he still chooses to lie, then I won’t hold back. I don’t mind being the villain.’
"The extreme heat will last for a year and a half. After the heat comes the Endless Night."
Stella Sterling watched him quietly, offering no comment.
Seeing her expression, he grew anxious. "You have to believe me! Everything I’m saying is true. I’m not lying to you!"
Of course, Stella Sterling knew he was telling the truth and not lying.
But she let none of this show on her face, only nodding. "Whether it’s true or not, time will tell."
"However, for now, you need to tell me the specific date the extreme heat will end."
Upon hearing this, Andrew Shaw hesitated. He didn’t seem to know how to answer.
"Don’t you remember? Even if you don’t know the exact day, you should at least know the general timeframe, right?"
Hearing this, Andrew Shaw nodded, then shook his head."
But he was worried Stella Sterling would be displeased, so he quickly explained, "Of course I remember. The extreme heat ends one year and four months from now."
"But now... I’m not so sure."
Hearing this, Stella Sterling raised an eyebrow, motioning for him to explain.
At this, Andrew Shaw’s expression grew puzzled.
He began to explain. "I transmigrated from what would be Year 18 of the apocalypse—fifteen years from our current point in time."
"When I transmigrated, this body was only a little over a year old. Then the apocalypse began."
"Based on my observations and comparing the last few years to my previous life, the apocalypse in this life started at roughly the same time. But for some reason, there have been some subtle changes."
"The order of the disasters is the same, but their specific timing is off. I don’t understand why, either."
"Based on my observations and comparisons over the past three-plus years, I’ve confirmed that the timing of some of the natural disasters is definitely different from my previous life, so I can’t give you any guarantees."
As he finished, his face was also filled with confusion and bewilderment.
He had been shocked when he’d first realized it, too.
He couldn’t understand why this life wasn’t unfolding the same way as the last one.
He hadn’t gotten any special powers or cheats when he transmigrated; his biggest advantage was his foreknowledge of events.
But the timeline in this life had shifted, which had made him extremely uneasy at first.
If he lost even that advantage, then other than his past-life experience, he’d have no edge over anyone else in this apocalypse.
Only later did he slowly discover that aside from the changes in timing, other details were exactly the same as in his previous life. This had calmed his heart considerably.
Hearing this, Stella Sterling’s gaze flickered.
’She already knew what he was talking about. The timeline in this life had indeed changed.’
